  1. I'm sitting on my arse and waiting for my insurance to send me to a surgeon who they will actually cover for the surgery.

So far, I'm zero for two on that bet.

the first referral I got ended up being a Dr that my insurance didn't cover, ( even though the insurance was the one that sent the authorization for said Dr)...it took another 2 months for me to get an authorization for another Dr. Hang in there, I swear they do this ish on purpose to discourage people from getting surgery.

  2. I have had type 2 for 20+ years. Preop I was taking 145u a day of lantus, 20-45u at each meal of novolog, 25mg a day of jardiance and once weekly injection of trulicity. My pre op A1c was 6.3, I am one month post op now. I am still taking the jardiance and novolog, my sugars have been running higher than I would like so I may need to reevaluate my meds. But at this point I'm goingglad to at least have cut out 2 of the 4 meds I was taking and hope that with more weight loss I will be able to decrease further, although it is very likely that I will always need some meds for my bs.

  3. Hi all,

I'm posting this for a friend of mine who had RNY surgery about two weeks ago. I can tell she is getting frustrated because her blood sugars are still high and she is still on medication. She keeps hearing these stories of people who went into instant remission and I think that was what she expected. I've been on this site enough to know that everyone is different and I am sure there are people out there who have had a similar experience so I'm hoping to be able to share some of those stories with her. Did anyone have a similar situation where their diabetes took longer to go into remission? I really appreciate any stories you can share. She is feeling now like the surgery wasn't worth it which is hard for me to hear. I'm still about 3 months away from surgery so it's hard for me to give her any advise without having had the experience myself. Thanks in advance!

I have had type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. I was taking 4 different medications to control it, including very high doses of insulin. My surgeon told me straight off that it was very likely because of the length of time I have had diabetes and amount of medications I took that I would still need some medication after surgery. I am only 3 weeks postoperative now, I am still taking one pill a day and some meal time insulin. It is likely that once closer to my goal weight I will be able to decrease or even eliminate these meds, but it is a process and only time will tell.

  4. Hi All,

I am 6 weeks out now, and finally able,to tolerate more things. Down 38 pounds since the day of my surgery. I finally had a bit of reduced - fat cheese, or some no-sugar-added peaches. My surgeon told me about Isopure drinks, and thinks they would be a good idea for me. My problem is, it seems you can only buy them by the case, and I'm reading so many mixed reviews. I can't afford to spend $60+ on a drink and then hate it. Has anyone tried them? Some say that some flavors have a yucky aftertaste, too.

I bought a 6 pack of them from Bariatric Advantage. I drank one and the taste was so bad I haven't touched the other 5. I bought a variety of Protein Drink mixes through them and have liked most of them. The liquid concentrates mix nicely and have had a great taste. I like the pomegranate flavor by ProtiDiet. (Also from BA) if you're s coffee drinker they have a delicious creamy tasting Cappaccino amaretto Protein drink mix. Most of them are 15g of Protein per packet, great for in-between meals.

  5. My surgery just got delayed by 3 months and I'm really having a hard time dealing with it. I need to hear stories about people that had a really long preop process (like almost a year of continually weighing in and going to support groups) and made it through and got the surgery and are now getting healthy and losing that weight!! Thanks

It took me 2 1/2 years to get my surgery...my pcp sent me to the nut (of course it took a couple months to get the referral and appt). I was required to do 6 months of nutritional counceling, because of scheduling issues it took 9 months to complete. Then the pcp told me I had to get psych clearance. That took another 3 months of visits and 2 more months to finally get the letter from the psych. By this time my insurance said I had to go back to nut counseling because it had been too long since I completed it...so another 6 months. Once that was done it took a few months to get the authorization to see a surgeon. As soon as I got the authorization I called for an appt., but of course I had to go to an orientation of type of meeting before I could actually meet with the surgeon. The next orientation was about a month out...I went, tried to schedule my appt only to be told that my insurance was not accepted by this surgeon( mind you the referral came from my insurance)...so back to the pcp to get a new authorization. Couple more months passed...Got my authorization, scheduled an appt. The surgeon said straight away that I was a great candidate for surgery, buuuut, I would need to get a sleep study first and clearance from cardio since I had previously had heart surgery. This process took about 3 more months. from there it took another 3 months for my insurance to approve the surgery and get a date scheduled. I did have to do a few more last minute tests, but nothing big, just an ekg, chest xray and some blood work. I finally got my surgery on 3/31/16, I'm 3 weeks postoperative and doing pretty well. I have had some minor dehydration issues, but otherwise doing great. I started out at a high weight of 265, by the time I met with the surgeon I was at 254, and the day before surgery I was at 238, at my first post-op appt. I was down to 216(-12lbs in 2weeks). The process can be long, frustrating and discouraging, but if this is something you really want you have to keep pushing forward. Best of luck to you! Hang in there!

  6. So my surgery is Monday morning and I'm looking for my post op Vitamins. I've read all the threads with some great info but I have a problem with one common ingredient that I'm allergic to. Saccharine and all of its derivatives. It's so frustrating because not only are there no chewable or liquid vitamins without artificial sweeteners but all of the so-called "healthy, sugar free snacks" that I am allowed to have on my liquid diet have the same thing. So I'm thinking I'll just crush all of the Vitamins but I'm curious if anyone knows of a brand that is all natural? I don't care if it tastes like #%*¥, I just want to stay healthy and get my nutrients. Or has anyone just crushed theirs during the liquid/gummy phase?

Look into the zarbees brand of chewable vitamins, I believe they only use honey as a sweetener.

  7. My doctor is in Beverly Hills, so I'll be hitting the hospital closer to him. I'm not sure right now which one that will be. The issue I see in my near future, is that my insurance company is being a complete d*** about approvals.

It took me 2 1/2 years to get my surgery approved. Just keep on top of the Doctors and insurance and don't let it get you discouraged.

  8. I'm in Pomona.

I'm hoping to get my surgery date in the next couple months, after my insurance accepts the previous two years of medical records (before the ACA, I couldn't afford to get insurance, as I have several preconditions).

I look forward to getting to know some of my SoCal board-mates better. :)

    Hi!

I'm in Upland. My surgery date was 3/31/16. My surgery was at Pomona Valley. Do you know what hospital you will be having surgery at?
