  1. My nutritionist just gave a talk and she said whey isolate is fine, but to make sure you get your protein from a variety of sources animal, plant, dairy, etc. I would be curious about her source, new versus old data. Also, I kind of doubt we manage to absorb all our protein we consume, but there has to be some research out there. I find with nutrition there are a lot of different opinions. 2. Hi everyone. I am about 2 months out (RNY 3/9/16) and I had celery at a bariatric support group yesterday. I knew veggies could be tricky, but I had just sat through an hour of nutritionist counseling lecture, and she really recommended getting enough greens. Most of the people in my practice are sleevers, and there isn't a lot of talk about dumping or differences between the two groups. My nutritionist even suggested I try the black bean Pasta, although I am nervous about that one. Starting this weekend I had a small salad and up to a cucumber a day with no issues at all. My calories started going higher than suggested, so I figured it was time to add some veggies back and getting more Fiber. I thought the celery would be ok. I though about it and even said to myself "can I eat this yet?" , and I avoided the raw carrots and ate a little of the tender celery stalks. 1-2 hours later I felt fine and ate more. I was really craving the veggies, took some home with me, and probably ate about 1-2 full size stalks, maybe 1-1.5 cups worth over several hours. I admit they tasted so good I just wanted more and I allowed myself to get carried away. I had some hummus/peanuts butter with them at the group, but most of the celery I ate plain. 12 hours later had a lot of cramping/etc./probably delayed dumping syndrome of some sort. I am very careful about grains/pasta/bread and sugars, but the celery got me. Any other "healthy" foods I should watch out for. I heard that steak and shellfish can also be hard to digest. Any other safe veggies. So far a small salad or cucumbers (peeled) seem fine, but I don't want to over do it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I struggle with the same thing. I am definitely still low energy. My surgery was 3/9/16. I think it is pretty common to be totes the first few months. I guess no one posts they are too tired to work out in Instagram. I have done workouts, but I was super tired the next day. Everyone keeps telling me it is still very early on. I have a bariatric small group training I do that really helps. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    False positive HCG test

It sound like a false positive, but sometimes a positive HCG test can be a sign of medical illness, and the surgeon is not allowed to do surgery after a positive HCG test without clearance. I don't blame you for being pissed, but keep in mind every test has potential to show a false positive, especially screening tests, so potentially no one messed up. OTC tests are probably less sensitive but have a lower chance of a false positive, but a usually for pre surgical test you want something more sensitive to make sure you don't miss anyone. In other words, just because one test kit showed positive, another could be negative. It is a know statistical possibility that a most medical a test kits, especially antibody based tests, can give a false positive, and that usually increases with sensitivity, which is why confirmation is always needed by a more precise and expensive test. My hospital tested my urine right in front of me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Dumping +

I have been lucky so far with dumping, but I got really sick today after eating too much celery at a bariatric support/focus group. I knew some vegetables could be bad, but they didn't give me any issues until 12 hours later. I ate a little it went fine so I ate some more. My practice does mostly sleevers, so nothing really focused on vegetables causing dumping or major problems except stoma blockages for large, uncooked pieces, and I was doing so well with cucumbers and small salads and staying away from too much sugar and breads, grains and Pasta, but the celery got me. Apparently celery, asparagus and corn are bad ones. Cabbage too. I avoided the carrots because I thigh they would be harder. I had just sat through a 1 hour nutritionist lecture saying eat more veggies but Protein first. I guess I got ahead of myself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Crab meat made me sick. It turned on me and I vomited before I dumped. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I'm HUNGRY

The sleeve surgery reduces hunger by removing a large portion of the gherlin (or hunger hormone) producing cells, but the remaining stomach still produces some gherlin. Besides that, the body certainly doesn't rely on only gherlin to make hunger. The biology is not all or nothing, hunger is real after surgery. It is just easier to manage, and some lucky folks have such a good response that they actually don't have hunger for a while. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. I had something like a constant, nagging slight pain in my stomach. It went away though, but the first few weeks it always felt a little sore inside my stomach, and eating often hurt a bit. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I had a hard time once I progressed beyond full liquids. I still need to try to get them in before I eat too much, or eat less meals higher in Protein or more liquid meals so I can get the fluids in. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I'm HUNGRY

I am annoyed by the "head hunger" sayings I hear a lot, thankfully just on the Internet and not from my doctors. I get that people eat for emotional reasons, but people who struggle with obesity have more hunger. Real hunger. That is part of the struggle. I figure if you consume less that 1000 calories that is real hunger, although post surgery it is less intense, for me anyways. At a few days post op at a few hundred calories a day my body was very hungry. Lots of empty stomach growling and feelings, but it was manageable and although it started to feel more like old hunger lately. I had a lot more hunger and thirst before I progressed to mush phase. Today, at 4 weeks post op, I still get hungry, but it is much more manageable then before, and of course I get full and feel full on so much less food. Why wouldn't it be hunger anyway? The surgery doesn't take away our ability to feel hunger. Everything still works, it is just modified. I hear a lot of people have the expectation that there won't be hunger, but I don't know where it comes from. I agree hunger is scary after surgery, but I believe the hunger is real and normal and real food will do a better job a controlling it when you get to that phase. 10. I could walk at a normal pace as soon as I went home. I walked 2 miles on Day 3 or 4, and felt great. Was cleared for all exercise at about 3.5 weeks. I had pretty much no pain after Day 4 or 5, just mainly stomach discomfort. I guess I had some tenderness at home, but it was pretty minimal. I did my first real workout with a trainer around Day 28, but I think I could have started jogging sooner, but my surgeon only cleared me for walking before then. Dumping question...

If a dumping episode is from too much sugar, and within 30 minutes it may be caused by hypoglycemia. Diluted fruit juice is supposed to help. The other kind though I think you just need to get through it. It sounds awful. I hope I never experience it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Packing for Surgery...

The main things I used where hand lotion, a wash cloth, cleansing cloths (like baby or face wipes) and a bath robe. A lot of people take pillows. Lip balm or chap stick is a must, although they will probably give you Vaseline. I didn't use it because I had quite a bit of pain and I was salty. Tampons also if applicable and a change of panties. Air freshener isn't a bad idea. They gave me ice packs and I probably could have used a heating pad. A little fan might be a good idea. My room had a fan though. At my hospital almost everyone goes home on Day 2. I had some minor complications or side effects, and my surgery was first thing in the am, and I was discharged in the evening the next day. I originally told my mom just to drop me off, my last few surgeries were easy and I don't usually involve her much in my medical care unless I need transportation, but the pain and discomfort was so much I was glad she was with me. I had an adverse reaction to one of the meds. The nurse didn't realized it until the next day. They let my mom stay with me longer because I couldn't stay still and my clothes kept coming off me. Eek. I was never in any real danger and everything went fine, but it was one of the more challenging experiences in my life to endure. I got pretty scared afterwards and let her go back home once I was pretty sure I would be ok. It helps to have a family member near by when you are recovering if possible. I must say although I had a quite bit of pain in my stomach area upon waking, I really had very little pain after discharge. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    STUCK

Are you sleeve or bypass? I may be wrong here- but shouldn't we be keeping to 1/2 cup of food per meal? I'm bypass, maybe that is why? I'm 6 weeks out as well and can't eat more than that physically. I'm so scared of stretching that little pouch! Lol I think it depends. I read by 3 months the RNY pouch usually expands to closer to a cup in size, and I bet that varies. Also I find the liquid foods may pass faster onto my duodenum, but besides shakes, I never measure the volume of my meals. Semi solid things like yogurt or puréed refried Beans are never an issue. I once heard you can't physically stretch the bypass pouch although it gets bigger with time, but I don't know what the truth it. Usually they say it is the stoma that widens to much, allowing food to pass faster, but that isn't from overeating. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. Just yesterday, and today too. I tried to avoid the skin. I had most of an average medium sized cucumber today. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. A small amount of cucumber went ok. I want to try a bit of endive instead of crackers. Saurkraut was a fail. Too stringy. Surgery was RNY 3/9/16 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    7 days post op

The only way I could get my Protein was Isopure zero carb clear protein, but not everyone likes the taste. Fluid is most import. Protein will keep you from loosing myself. At my first nutritionist appointment I managed to loose 20 pounds of fat, not any muscle thanks to meeting protein requirements. My weight loss may have been slower because of this, but long term you want to conserve all the muscle you can. I take Baritrack Vitamins. They are powder, like a pixie stick. 17. Hmmm. Something in the hospital gave me that horrible side effect. I thought it was the Zofran, but maybe it was the reglan. There are a bunch of alternative for anti emetics like Zofran, scolpamine, and probably a bunch more. My place even recommended Benadryl as a mild anti nausea med after discharge. Ginger really helps me too. Zofran can sometimes interact with SSRIs On the anti emetics I got very restless. Looking back it was kind of funny. I apparently couldn't keep clothes on I was so out of it. No chance of a blood clot with all that movement. They loaded me up before the pouch test. I couldn't sit still in the line. It took a lot of self control not to run back up to my room afterwards on the 6th floor and I was pacing a lot. Once I got back to my floor I started practically running and punching my legs to stop the feeling in them. They gave me torredol then and it knocked me out. Carbs post op

I just wanted to mention, I bought sons rice crackers and they pushed my carbs up around 70, but right after my plateau finally ended. I am going to add crackers again, but I am looking for some with Fiber but that won't be too hard. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    probiotics

My surgeon recommend one but I blanked on the brand. Now foods did look like a good one though. I like kefir, and plain kefir from evolve has an impressive list strain for food. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria supplements you take to help populate or repopulate the gut with beneficial bacterial strains. A lot of doctors seem to recommend them to us. Most of the research is of shorter term duration, and some of it falls into the realm of complementary nutritional, so I say it really depends on how long you will take them. Like if they are needed to maintenance or some people taking after an insult like illness or antibiotics. I am using some now, but in the future I might just drink/eat fermented foods which are "natural" sources of probiotics like kefir, sauerkraut, kimchee (spelling)? I am only taking them because both the Nut and surgeon suggested it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Yucca!

My nut said I could eat mashed potatoes while advancing my diet. I definitely had some starchy things during the mushy phase, but the quantities were not very large. I mainly has either sweet or regular potatoes mashed. Now I am trying to limit carbs. High Protein foods really help control my awakening appetite better. 24. I am in the US. I had 2 or 3 shots in the hospital, none after discharge. As far as b12, my Vitamin has a lot (it is a bariatric brand) but I am probably going to continue to supplement with some sublingual. I don't have to, but with all the fatigue I have been getting, I figured it might be a good idea. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. Some people have a lot of nausea. My place recommended Benadryl actually for nausea, but it makes a person tired. It should definitely improve. Sometimes ginger helps me. Flat, diet ginger soda or ginger tea. Hope you feel better. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
