  1. Ok so I'm exactly 1 week post-op. I measured myself today and I'm down almost 22% of my excess weight already!! I have lost 5 kg from from a total of 23kg that I'm supposed to lose.. Is this normal or something to worry about being? Keep in mind that 4 days out of the 7 days were with absolutely 0 oral intake due to some post op complications. Dietician says that's ok but I'm still waiting for doctors opinion.

  2. @@mmy -- No, your Protein requirement does not come down. THe only difference is that eventually, you will not need to have Protein shakes as a meal replacement anymore--you will get all your protein from food (and Isopure if you like but that isn't a meal replacement as far as I know). I will warn you that Isopure is an acquired taste. It's talked about a lot on this site. When I first tried it I hated it and spit it out. But for some reason a few weeks later I went back and now I love them but understand that not everybody will.

But, protein is your main thing you need to watch and count forever (at least for RNY--I can't speak for sleeves or bands because I just don't know). And you should try to get over "counting calories". We count grams of protein rather than calories. It's actually easier and less overwhelming.

No I'm not counting calories at all. I had a mini gastric bypass which was even more modified to suite me since my BMI is only 33. I think I won't be able to order isopure since no shipping company seems to be willing to ship food items especially in glass bottles. They only option I'm left with now is the GNC brand isolate & hydrolyzed protein. Which tastes horrible. I wish there were protein daily injectables or maybe pills to just swallow

  3. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. Your daily Protein requirement is met by a combination of the Protein you obtain from supplements (protein shakes, protein bars) combined with the protein from meals. But after surgery, the volume of food is so small that you have to rely on supplements. If you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can began to reduce your requirements on protein supplements as your meal volume increases. Over the first 1 1/2 years, I went from 3 Protein Shakes per day, down to 2, down to 1 and then down to none (once I reached 1 cup per meal).

I relied on softer foods (chili and soups). I made my own and fortified them with around twice the protein found in canned Soups and chilis. At the end of the following article, I have included a few recipes. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Ahhh that's great to know .. But I still need to know, does your daily protein requirement reduces as you come down in weight? I know for sure someone weighing 70kg needs much less protein that someone weighing 120kg!

  4. I think you have to keep up the Protein forever, but you know there are Isopure RTD beverages you can buy. They have assorted flavors, 20oz. bottles 40gms of Protein in each bottle. I buy mine from Lucky Vitamin, they have the best prices. My favorite is blue raspberry. They are really good & there is no after taste.

I just googled the product.. It comes in a clear class bottle right?? So far looks good. Is this something I can start with now? I'm really struggling with Protein shakes. And Multivitamins to be honest. I'm using the Bariatric Choice all-in-one multi-Vitamins, and also bought the chewy bites version of it. Both taste horrible.

  5. Currently I find it really difficult to drink my Protein Shakes. So I was really wondering if down the line I can manage to get in my recommended daily intake of Protein (which for me is around 60g) will I still have to drink my Protein shake? I mean is protein not absorbed properly with bypass patients the same was many Vitamins and minerals are hence the need to supplement with Multi Vitamins? ?!

I'm thinking 1 chicken breast + 1 serving of cottage cheese + 1 serving of oats per day can meet my Recommended daily intake of protein

Also when I reach my goal weight and my weight stabilizes will I still need to take in this much of protein per day?

  6. Ensure is loaded with sugars - it's not a good choice for Bariatric patients. That could definitely be causing dumping. Premier Protein is a good option - 30 gms Protein and very little fat or sugar! Ensure (original) has 6gms fat, 33 carbs and only 9 gms protein. I am surprised your surgeon said it was okay.

Oh dear thank for the info. I'll defiantly try and find another brand. It doesn't seem to be easy to find what I want where I live so I might resort to ordering online.

Let's say if down the line I can manage to eat a full chicken breast per day. Would that be enough and there will be no need for the protein shake?

Do you have carnation Breakfast essentials no sugar added at your local stores?

No .. I live in a different continent btw.. But we do have GNC ! Is that good enough? Ordering online will take some time so until then can I use something from GNC instead?

  7. I agree, Ensure is terrible for bariatric patients. Too much sugar and not enough Protein.

As to how much Protein you should be getting, what did your surgeon tell you?

My protein target is 100 grams a day. My surgeon's targets range from 80-100 grams Adam depending on your starting BMI. For him, anyone with a starting BMI over 50 and all makes, the target is 100 grams. Women who start out under 50 BMI have a minimum target of 80 grams.

My starting BMI is 33. So could it be around 70 grams per day?! A chicken breast is around 43 grams protein.

  9. Ok what I've noticed so far that every time I take my Protein Shake I feel uneasy, nauseous and get a diarrhea straight away.. Could this be a dumping syndrome? The brand I'm using is called Ensure (approved by my clinic) though they did recommend another brand that I can't seem to find where I live called Beneprotein. Is there any other options to Protein shakes?

  10. Ok so I'm 1 week post op and for the last 3 days tummy wasn't feeling well at all. Mummy recommended beef or lamb Bone Broth. And voalah! 15 minutes later I was really feeling much better.. In fact 1 hour later I was feeling hungry again and for the first time I was able to drink my Protein Shake whole. Just thought of sharing this.

    The recipe I used is:-

    - beef or lamb bones (mummy says they're better than chicken bones)

    - 1 stick of carrot roughly chopped

    - 1 whole head of garlic cut in half

    - 1 big onion roughly chopped and don't bother to peel.

    - 2 bay leaves

    - few pepper corns

    - lemon juice or apple cider vinegar

    - some herbs of your choice (I just used the store bought mixed herbs)

    - a pinch of salt

In a large pressure cooker brown the bones first then add the carrots, garlic and onions, add the remaining ingredients then add Water and close tightly. Let cook for around an hour. If not using a pressure cooker I guess it will take between 3-4 hours..

    And enjoy the broth

  11. So I had my mini gastric bypass surgery on April 30th. Due to some complications I had to stay the the 3 nights following in ICU and the 4th night at the hospital's normal room and was discharged yesterday. For 4 days I had absolutely no oral intake what so ever. Yesterday and the day before I was already starting to feel really much better and had no symptoms at all (which now I think was due to the heavy medications) in fact I was feeling really hungry in the last two days. The dietician pass by me early yesterday and said I can start on Clear liquids (Water, apple juice, Jello and clear broth) and should stick to that for 3 days. Following that I should move into heavy liquids (Soups, milk juices and yogurt). My surgeon however later said I can skip that and can start with heavy liquids as long as I can tolerate it. Happy was I went straight ahead and had cream of chicken Soup right after discharge. I wasn't really sure when was I full so after having half the bowl decided to stop. Had some apple juice 2 hours later. Had my Vitamins and went to bed. Woke up with some abdominal discomfort and really heavy and bloating. massive diarrhea. Today I am still feeling bloated and unable to take anything in orally. Diarrhea still there and I feel abdominal discomfort and really extremely lethargic. So what should I do to ease this and regain some energy back? Should I just force my self to some liquids?

Also my hair started to fall off really bad. Bought some hair vitamins along with the special Bariatric vitamins but even the smell of vitamins gets me nauseous.. Any help with that??

  12. I just my mini gastric bypass 4 days ago. I am self paid and had to travel to a near by country to get it done since at my home country it's only offered for BMI 40+.

Initially I had discussed gastric sleeve with my surgeon and had already read so much on gastric sleeve and was just mentally prepared for it. I have a BMI of 33 (pre-op BMI) weight 77kg and height 153cm. I also have PCOS and insulin resistance. I have 1 child who needs BMT and that has to come from a matched sibling donor. So not only that I want to have another child I need another child to save my child. After many failed IVF cycles I decided to take a drastic measure and go for Bariatric surgery to help me lose weight.

So the surgery day came by and right before my surgery my surgeon came into my room to have a talk with me. He recommended mini gastric bypass which at the beginning shocked me because I always thought it's a surgery for morbidly obese patients. He said the following points:

1- mini gastric bypass has less risk of bleeding and leakage compared to gastric sleeve because the stapling site is much smaller

2- the hype around gastric sleeve is because nowadays general surgeons are doing gastric sleeve and it's becoming more available and the stapling company is paying so much to advertise for the surgery because it uses more stapling.

3- mini gastric bypass is reversable

4- with both procedures patients need to take in Multivitamins but mini gastric bypass is not associated with more malabsorption than gastric sleeve.

5- chances of regaining weight with gastric sleeve is higher that with mini gastric bypass.

After that being said I don't know why or how I just agreed immediately to mini gastric bypass without further thinking. The surgeon also ordered for a blood thinning injection (heparin) prior to the operation he said to cut the risk of blood clots. He said the risk of blood clots forming is higher than the risk of bleeding.

Got the surgery done and right after I woke up from the GA I started vomiting blood along with blood clots. Huge amounts of blood and I was feeling severe pain. My HB dropped from 13 to 7 and was rushed to and endoscopy procedure to try and stop the bleeding and got 7 units of blood transfusion. My case is stable now with HB around 8.7. But I can't help but feel huge regret as to the decision I was rushed to make not to mention the huge hospital bill I'm left with.

I feel I didn't get enough time to think about the mini gastric bypass and I'm not really well informed of its side effects. I worry that I will end up losing more weight than required and would be severely malnourished. I have also ready somewhere that the surgery is not really reversable since after cutting the nerves in the stomach it will be impossible to reconnect them. Now I worry I won't be able to get pregnant again. And just worry about so many things.

  13. Remember this is a good thing ! You will have a hard first day but you get better each day after .... Do some meditation and calm down . I think going into it with a calm positive attitude you will do great ! I am a 10 days out and am doing great! I have my surgery in Tijuana. Make sure you don't eat anything today but clear liquid and you should be on the right road.

    Kudos to you !!

Thanks. Yes I'm actually on a liquid diet for today. But doctor didn't say anything about clear!! Only liquids and Soups are ok.. I'm starting to worry now

  15. I have PCOS. Was diagnosed at the age of 22. My periods have been irregular but would really improve when I lose weight. I have gained more weight in the past year so my periods have been a mess like never before. I have decided to get a VSG in hope to treat my PCOS and infertility. My surgery in scheduled April 28th.

As to facial hair I have dealt with that though laser hair removal.

I am currently at a BMI of 32. I know when I was at a BMI of 26 or lower I had so much less of the side effects of PCOS.

  16. @@mmy How much weight do you have to lose and do you have comorbities?

The reason I ask is - your husband needs to understand that obesity is putting your life at risk too.

I need to lose between 20-25 kg. That's around 44-55 lbs. my weight has been just piling over the years and every year I'm heavier than the one before. Plus I have PCOS and insulin resistance . So if I don't act fast I will eventually develop type 2 diabetes.
