  1. I'm so glad I found a forum dedicated to MGB. I kept posting my questions at the RNY forum and no one seemed to be able to really answer all of my question.. Well here we go:-

1- I was wondering if after getting the MGB are will still able to digest and absorb Vitamin pills (and not capsules) like prenatal Vitamins for example? Sorry for TMI but before my surgery and when I used to take my prenatal my urine would change to bright yellow. It just didn't happen this time!! I'm only taking the prenatal a to help prepare my body for pregnancy.. I take it along with Bariatric vitamins.

2- I came across a Bariatric once a day capsule under the brand name ProCare Health . Was wondering if any of you have used it before? Is it advisable to use a once a day pill? I have read somewhere that chewables are the best for bypass patients and it has to be taken 2-4 times for best absorption.. Is this true? I just can't stand chewables and defiantly would prefer taking 1 pill/ capsule per day instead of 4-6.

3- Is MGB associated with more malabsorption than regular RNY? My surgeon said they usually bypass around 2 meters of the intestines but because my pre-op BMI was only 33 and I didn't need to lose much that he will only bypass 1.8 meters which will cause slightly better absorption.. Is this true?

4- since with MGB we have a larger pouch compared to RNY does that mean that some absorption can happen in the stomach??

  2. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. I take a number of Vitamins including multi-vitamins, B12, B1, calciums and D3. For a Multivitamin Flintstone chewable are recommended. gummy vitamins are not recommended. Time release B12 capsules are not recommended. B12 should be sublingual and methylcobalamin. Calciums should be calcium citrate. They are better absorbed. Generally your surgeon's office is well versed on the requirements and will provide you with a complete list of the requirements and available options.

After surgery, I was unable to swallow medium to large pills. I had to either crush or split the pills. My ability to swallow returned after a couple months. The inability to swallow large capsules may limit their use early on.

[Also since you mentioned prenatal Vitamins. I should point out that this surgery is not recommended for those that are pregnant or about to become pregnant.]

But I had this surgery specifically to reverse my PCOS and be able to get pregnant!

The reason I asked about prenatal pills is that I would like to start on them along with Bariatric Multivitamins in order to prepare my body for pregnancy. The prenatal vitamins have more ingredients that aren't available in Bariatric Multivitamins and they help with the lining of the uterus.

  5. Can you eat Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? tuna?

You just may need to eat more frequently if you can't get enough in.

Low Protein and low Water will have an impact on your weight loss.

I suggest that it is probably a very good idea to stay off the scale until you are able to get your Protein and fluids up. Until you do so, as far as I am concerned, the numbers on the scale are meaningless.

I actually do eat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and tuna. Only still in small quantities.. Will try hard enough and hopefully will get there soon.. Thanks ❤️

As I mentioned I had to stop my Protein shakes because every time I had them I would get what seems like dumping syndrome. So doctor advised to stop and concentrate on Protein from food

My daily protein target is set at 60-70 grams per day. But doctor said if I can do 40 for the time being that should be fine.

No I am unable yet to meet my daily requirement of Water.. But Proteins I'm trying and almost there.. I have 12g from milk+ 6g from an egg + 25 or 26g from meat that's around 44g per day.. Which according to my doctor is not bad at all given that my BMI was only at 33 pre- surgery.

I have PCOS.. And have always struggled to lose weight. Could it contribute to my stalls and/or Water retention now?

  7. Ok so I'm 3 weeks out from my mini bypass. I have managed to lose 9 kg in the first 2 weeks, then stalled which I was expecting but now I've gained 1 kg which is baffling me!! My oral intake is no where near what I used to eat in the past and I am making sure that whatever I eat is either sugar free or low in carbs. I've had a very bad reaction to Protein Shakes so my doctor advised me to stop all Protein shakes and concentrate on my oral intake of Proteins. An example of what I eat in one day is:-

    - 180 ml of low fat milk

    - 1 egg

    - 1/2 avocado

    - 100g of puréed meat

    - 1 tbsp of mushy peas

    - 180 ml of low fat milk

    - 1 banana

    - 1 small cucumber

I mean I can understand the stalls and why they happen but gaining a kg is worrying to me at this stage..

  8. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. Your daily Protein requirement is met by a combination of the Protein you obtain from supplements (protein shakes, protein bars) combined with the protein from meals. But after surgery, the volume of food is so small that you have to rely on supplements. If you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can began to reduce your requirements on protein supplements as your meal volume increases. Over the first 1 1/2 years, I went from 3 Protein Shakes per day, down to 2, down to 1 and then down to none (once I reached 1 cup per meal).

I relied on softer foods (chili and soups). I made my own and fortified them with around twice the protein found in canned Soups and chilis. At the end of the following article, I have included a few recipes. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Ahhh that's great to know .. But I still need to know, does your daily protein requirement reduces as you come down in weight? I know for sure someone weighing 70kg needs much less protein that someone weighing 120kg!

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

No, your protein requirement does not decrease. I was told my protein target is for life.

But why? That doesn't make sense to me. Plus the daily recommended protein intake for an average healthy woman is 46g per day.

Prior to the surgery I don't think anyone really counted their daily intake of protein. Yet most of us had never had a problem. Protein shakes really made me sick and triggered what seemed like dumping syndrome for me although I made sure they have 0 carbs and 0 sugar. So my doctor advised me to stop all protein shakes and concentrate of food source of protein instead. I now I'm feeling much better though I'm not really able to meet my daily target of protein yet. He said I will get there gradually.

  9. So far I keep getting mixed information about the two procedures in terms of malabsorption. Do they both cause the same amount of malabsorption or does the MGB cause more malabsorption??

I remember my surgeon saying that life long supplementation is only needed for duodenal switch!!! And all other surgeries only need supplementation for the first couple of years only! Also read somewhere that RNY is really restrictive only. And 78% of the fat , 100% of the Protein and 100% of the carbs are still absorbed. And the huge loss of weight is only caused by restricting the calorie intake. That's why there is always a chance of regain several years later.

I wasn't fond of the opurity chewables from Unjury's website either. They were taken for a couple of weeks post-op, then I switched to their capsule multivitamin. That one is also 4 per day (either all in the morning, or 2 morning/2 night), but since you're already used to that it shouldn't be a problem.

The capsule has more Iron, D, and B12 than the chewable. This should eliminate the need for additional supplementation of those ones, unless you still prove to have a deficiency of course.

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

no I'm actually not used to taking 4 pills per day. That's why I'm looking for only one pill per day .. Thanks anyways

But what could be causing the dumping Syndrome in my case??? Doctor doesn't think it's a dumping syndrome thought he didn't say what he thinks it is.

In regards to the Protein shakes, so far I've tried 4 brands and all caused me to have what seems like dumping syndrome, the other issue is after the surgery it seems that my taste buds have changed. I can't stand anything that is sweet and absolutely gag on things with artificial flavors and/or smells. I will for sure keep looking and trying and testing.. But for the time being I'm barely meeting 20g of Protein per day. Since I can handle the milk well I was thinking of drinking milk instead of Water. Not sure if that's ok though?

  13. Currently I'm taking the Bariatric fusion chewable tablets in cherry flavor. I have to take 4 tablets per day. Since after the surgery it seems my taste buds have changed and I just can't stand any artificial smells or flavors. I'm looking for a Multivitamin pill/capsule to be swallowed and that has to be taken only once per day. The powders? utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury have a chewable tablet that is to be taken once per day but I just want to avoid anything that is chewable. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance

  14. @@James Marusek I'm 2 weeks post-op. Actually yesterday I had milk alone to see if it was the trigger and it went in fine with no problems for the rest of the day. It seems the Protein shake and the porridge are the worst for me. I had MGB which is supposed to cause much less dumping syndrome. Called my doctor yesterday and he said to take nexium 40mg but I'm already taking omeprazol 40mg. He said well then change to nexium!!!

I don't have any of the other symptoms you have mentioned.

  15. It seems no matter what I eat or how I eat Or how much I eat always feel nauseous with accelerated heart beat and dizziness and usually dierrhea 30-60 min after. What to me seems like dumping syndrome. Some of the foods I eat are:-

    - Protein Shake 0 carb 0 sugar

    - Greek style yoghurt

    - soft scrambled eggs

    - lentil Soup (no potatoes)

    - home made Tomato Soup

    - no sugar added creamy porridge

    - 0 sugar Jello

    - cottage cheese

The only thing that I have managed to take in well is Bone Broth. I eat very small amount using only the tip of a small spoon each time. And no more than a total of 3-4 table spoons of food each time. Maximum 3 meals per day (that doesn't include water) and no I don't drink or eat at the same time.. Leave a gap between 15-30min between each. Is this normal??!

I have also noticed that I have a heightened sense of smell now and everything smells horrible to me. I am hating the taste of sweet things which is making it really really really difficult to drink my Protein shakes. I tried a sample of powders? utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken soup protein and the taste was horrible. I am just really finding it difficult to cope. Any advice?

  16. I had a BMI of 33. And was considering VGS. Yet my surgeon recommended Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) for the following reasons:-

1- mini gastric bypass has less risk of bleeding and leakage compared to gastric sleeve because the stapling line is much shorter.

2- the hype around gastric sleeve is because nowadays general surgeons and not Bariatric surgeons are doing gastric sleeve and it's becoming more available and the stapling company is paying so much to advertise for the surgery because it uses more stapling.

3- mini gastric bypass is reversable. So if anything happens we can always go back. Where as with gastric sleeve it's not reversable.

4- with both procedures patients need to take in Multivitamins but mini gastric bypass is not associated with more malabsorption than gastric sleeve. And the surgeon can adjust to some extend can modify the surgery so as to cause slightly better absorption (something to do with where to reconnect the intestines).

5- chances of regaining weight with gastric sleeve is higher that with mini gastric bypass.

6- type 2 diabetics respond better to MGB than to Gastroc sleeve

7- the % of of total weight loss is almost the same with the two surgeries

8- the chances of developing GERD following MGB is much less than with VGS.

The best option is to discuss with several doctors and try to really process it well before you make your final decision. I had PCOS so I had insulin resistance issues

  17. Well I haven't reached there yet. I'm only 1 week post-op. But I guess the best feeling (which is actually the reason I got this surgery done in the first place) would be to achieve a healthy pregnancy. I have PCOS and 1 child needing bone marrow transplant from a matched sibling donor (now before anyone says anything we would really want another baby no matter what)

Second reason would be that I really want to be able to wear whatever I can and still look good in it.
