Exactly. I went through the 6 month diet and was approved (with United Healthcare) and I ended up losing 40 pounds and the BMI I had after the 40 pound weight loss was less than 40 (around 37) and I didnt have any comorbidities. They really just want to see if you are capable of following directions and making a commitment (following the diet and losing weight). So you are definitely on the right track. They use you starting weight when they submit all of your info to the insurance company. The requested weight loss is really to get you in the swing of making the proper changes to be successful post op and to shrink your liver as much as possible so there is no chance they will nick it during your operation. First off, congrats on making it this far and getting a surgery date. Hmm...I'm not a doctor but it seems to me that you are eating too few calories even for pre op. I am pre op as well and I am on a 1200 calorie diet (3 400 calorie meals a day). Your body may be in starvation mode which is why you have not lost anything more. I am curious about this question as well, ridgerunner... What's the tipping point between choosing RNY or DS? I don't know if you have ever seen the show "My 600lb Life" but even they don't get DS when they have hundreds and hundreds of pounds to lose. He really isn't the best doctor, don't get me started, oh wait I already started... Despite that fact that viewers have yet to see a surgery he can't perform (I'm not too sure how to feel about that lol????????)...you cannot deny the fact that this man is changing the lives of the people who the rest of the world has pretty much given up on. It all depends on your insurance and your surgeon's office. When my info was submitted to insurance (on a Friday) I was approved on Monday. I had a surgery date about a week later. I went through UHC. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App

My surgeon told me if I wanted DS, then he would have to refer me to an outside program. DS is known as the most effective wls but it also has the highest rate of complications. I think DS is reserved as the last, last, last, last resort because of the complexity & severity of the surgery. Patients are much more likely to lose and keep their weight off but they are more likely to experience malnutrition, Vitamin deficiencies, etc. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App

My last go around, my surgeon did require one. Its not that bad. You just have to go to a clinic and spend the night with a sleep apnea mask while someone at the clinic monitors you. I think I left the clinic first thing in the morning. I didnt end up having sleep apnea (Thank God!) Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App

Hello Courtney! Congrats on taking control of your health/weight. I can totally relate to losing/gaining weight so many times and being big all of my life. I am still pre op under Kaiser's bariatric program but I was approved before under a different insurance (UHC) that required a 6 month diet. I was approved for the sleeve but i chickened out the morning of surgery 3 years ago. As far as the 6 month diet for me it consisted of visiting my primary care doctor once a month for 6 months. During the appointments I would be weighed and the doctor and I would discuss the type of diet I was on (at the time I was doing low carb, high protein) and my exercise plan (I was at the gym 2-3 times a week). Your insurance will probably require a psych evaluation (this is no biggie you just meet with a psychiatrist who asks you about your weight history and your expectations of wls). Also there may be an appointment with a dietician. During this appointment you will be educated on how to eat pre op and post op. After you finish the 6 mos, the dietician and psych appointments you may have a class or two to complete at the hospital where you will have surgery (to prep you even more on life post op). If all goes well with the surgeon and you get all your labs/tests done (I had to complete a sleep study and an Upper GI as well as regular labs like A1C, cholesterol, etc). After all of that you should get your surgery date. This was my experience with United Healthcare. It may or may not be different for you. From my seminar to surgery, it was 8 months. Hi Mozza, yes it's inevitable. Weight loss leads to hair loss in most people, but not all. I had the sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and at about 4 months out I started losing hair by the handfull. I was quite upset but knew it was coming. I just cut my hair shorter so it wasn't as noticeable. Once I started adding more fat to my diet the hair grew back and thickened up. It's just a temporary problem and you will soon be over it. I promise, the weight loss is worth the hair loss. I will be having a revision to bypass in a couple of months and I will go through this again and though I dread it, I know it is a temporary thing and well worth the problem.May I ask why you are having a revision to bypass?
