  1. Hey Greenchrysalis! Because I'm such an uber-geek, and spent many, many days working the recovery room as a respiratory therapist, I can tell you that everybody wears oxygen straight out of surgery (although most people don't remember very much about their recovery). It doesn't mean there were complications. Most likely, the writers / producers are unfamiliar with healthcare and the oxygen was to make her "look" all hospital-ly. I know...I'm one of those geeks that corrects tiny details about insignificant thinks. I can't help myself sometimes. :rolleyes2:

    Texarkana Bandsters

Hey Sharon. Maybe the others have some better suggestions. My advice: Grit your teeth, drink LOTS of water, stay busy. It helped me tremendously to know that the reason for the diet is to shrink your liver, which makes the surgery much safer. You can absolutely do it. Good Luck.

    The Great Flood

Ooops. Trying for sarcasm, failing miserably. I read about some nutjob somewhere that claims that dinos and men walked the Earth together. This was because he somehow had worked out, in his own mind, what era in time the Bible was written in. Keep in mind I'm a Christian. A baptist, at that. I don't see why religion can't co-exist with science, unlike Dino-man.

    Polygamy Sects

Normally I am of the Libertarian philosophy, and am against government intervention in the religious lives of its citizens. But in case where sexual abuse is suspected, I think it's the government owes it to the citizens to investigate. We could argue all day about the validity of polygamy as a religious right. Usually, I'd just be like.....whatever makes them happy, as long as they aren't hurting anybody else. But I saw a program on polygamous cults awhile ago (each family had, like 35 children, multiple wives). Here's the kicker: The families were on welfare to help with expenses. WTF?!? Apparently, this is done on purpose to cost the governments all they can. The cults call this policy "bleeding the beast". So.....our government gives aid to people who are thumbing their noses at the laws? I don't get it. My libertarian side says - several wives, whatever. But you have to be able to support them on your own dime!

    Flying, Weight and Discrimination...

Uh, but in America, we're capitalists, not socialists. We can't really compare to Canada in most things, because it would be an apples & oranges type of thing.

That's a good idea Sugarbear. I'll drop Amy a line and see if she can shed some light. I wouldn't mind paying 4$ for a tube, unless the protein was not going to be absorbed, LOL. I would like to come to the support meetings, but I'm stuck in the sleep lab Mon-Thurs. Technically, I'm at Wadley with y'all!! I will certainly look into getting a ticker. I've meant to do it before now. Thanks for replying. Have a great day, all!
  7. I live in Texas, not TOO terribly far from Jena. It was a bad deal. I'm sure you realize that the KKK and other white supremacy groups marched to "counter-protest". What a bunch of jackasses...

    The Great Flood

There're kooks in every religion. Even mine. As a Christian, I think people go awry when they inject their own personal opinions into theology. When I was reading the Bible, I didn't see any description of Noah's menu choices post-flood. What a stupid radio talk-show host!! Now about cavemen riding the dinosaurs.....that's totally feasable. :huh2:

    Flying, Weight and Discrimination...

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it really is that the benevolent airlines only care about protecting the normal-sized passengers from the evil obese ones.

    Flying, Weight and Discrimination...

No, B II, I was trying to make light (pun intended) of the situation by funny metaphor. The reason a person might have to buy 2 tickets is more for their weight (and, because the flight burns more fuel, the airline's profit margin is cut) than for spilling over onto fellow passengers. I think the airlines don't give a toss if the passengers are comfy or inconvienced, as long as they make money.

What do you people Have against Haiku answers I find them peaceful :huh2:

    Flying, Weight and Discrimination...

Laurend and Kat hit the nail right on the head. The airlines (and I am no fan, I assure you) are not discriminating based on a person's size. They have to go on how much weight the plane carries. The more weight, the more fuel that will be consumed per flight. The more fuel consumed, the lower the profit margin. The weight issue (vs. size) can also be looked at from a safety point. It's an extreme example (and 1-2 POS would not make such a drastic difference), but would you rather be on a plane that was target weight, or a plane that was dangerously overweight? That's why the airlines aren't hit with discrimination suits. If a person's disability was that they farted flames, and were denied a job working in a fireworks factory, would that also be discrimination? (We'll have to wait for a DS'er to answer that rhetorical question, I suppose)

All you people do is complain...

Wow. Scoot over to the men's page (here, take this signed hallpass. They'll let you in) and look at all the guys that do NOT care what the BMI is. Maybe because us guys are all raging muscles under our fatsuits? I really think this dissing each other based on BMI is a "woman thing". *puts blindfold on and readies himeself for inevitable firing squad*
  14. I'm all about supporting the band, but I think a more dramatic soap storyline would be for her character to have had the DS and have the other cast members deal with the nightmare digestive issues!!! That, I might watch....:huh2:

    How Much?

Juli, very witty metaphor. Unfortunately, if somebody is clueless enough to go on & on about your weight, they may be clueless enough that the joke is wasted on them.
  16. A new civil rights movement? What rights are needed that you don't currently have? See, to me....that kind of talk diminishes what the older generations fought for. I understand your concept, but....the older generation fought for desegregation, the right to vote (as a "whole person"), the right to marry whatever color they wanted, etc. Sorry you got pulled over. My oldest son got pulled over with 2 friends. They got their person searched and the car searched. The officer asked the driver if he was known by the alias "whitey". I shit you not......you cannot make this stuff up. The were profiled because they were young. See, I think we're all in the Soup together. IMO, some black activists are doing more harm than good by emphasizing that the current generation are unlikely to achieve anything because "white America" holds them back. That would be very insulting to me! Statements like Jesse Jackson tends to make de-emphasize the power of the individual to accomplish.

Down 38 lbs. since Jan 31

Agree with Med.Mike. The BMI charts are unrealistic (IMO) if a man has any substancial muscle. Waist size and bodyfat % will be a better guide that total weight, I think.

    Texarkana Bandsters

Hi all. For those of you that are trying the "tube" protein shots....are docs H&K on board with this? Without getting too incredibly geeky, I was reading up on these, and some people claim that the protein in the tubes is not nearly as effective as the whey protein because the tube stuff is de-colodian-ized (connective tissue broken down so the protein is jello-ish) or something. Anybody know anything about this? Or do I need to ask Amy the dietician? Or am I being a super geek again? LOL
  19. Medicare will probably loosen up on the requirements for being banded as more cases are viewed as "successful". If the government sees that they'll be saving money in the long run by avoiding larger weight-related health issues...they'll try to funnel people in. But that brings up the issue of "overloading" the docs. Wheetsin has a very valid point with medicaid pts and compliance. Perhaps the LB is not the right tool for that population.

We have a large Newfie (about 180 lbs, or so), but he's the biggest baby ever.

    Scared & Embarassed

Hey Whip, as another dude, I can totally relate. What really struck me when I was on the liquid pre-op diet was how much of my socializing was tied in to eating one way or another. I guess I kind of had to "mourn" the fact that my old way of life was no longer going to be feasable. That's the worst thing, but also the best thing, if you think about it. I feel pretty confident that very few people could match MY love of food. During my initial doctor visit, they did a metabolism test on me. The results showed that I have a very high metabolism. At first, I thought the test was flawed (it showed I could maintain weight if I ingested 4000 calories / day), because how could I have gotten so fat if my metabolism was so high? When I really thought about it, the answer is that I was taking in an enourmous amount of calories........The point is, I love to eat. I'm almost 7 weeks post-band, lost around 45 lbs so far, and have never felt hungry, or like I was denying myself anything! If I can do it, you can do it, my friend....

    Overweight Daughter

Hey Gloucester. Have you / she given bodyweight exercises a try? They can be done at home (anywhere, for that matter) very easily. Because they build muscle, bodyweight exercises will raise her metabolic rate. Because the resistance is her bodyweight, the exercises won't build "bulky" muscle, like weights might. And if the exercises are done rapidly ("circuit training", in gym speak) it's also an excellent aerobic benefit. You can find lots of bodyweight exercises on the internet, or I can recommend a really excellent book. They're pretty fun to do, and there's a big enough variety where they tend to not be boring. Here's the million-dollar question: Does your daughter think she is too big?

    Want Procedure...No Support

Mommie, I don't know if this will help or not, but I'm in Texarkana, Tx and my pts (I work in a sleep lab in a bariatric center of excellence hospital) that have tricare (tricare south region, to be specific) usually get covered pretty easily. They need one (1) co-morbidity with a certain BMI, along with the other stuff (sleep study, psyche eval, dietician, etc.) Was all that clear as mud? Bottom line, tricare south region covers in Texarkana.

A sad (if it's for real) eBay listing

Except......there's not a big difference between what he's doing and prostitution. Note the wording of the ad. He doesn't say he'll be a handyman, or a laborer. The word "slave" has connotations of being an object, of being property, of having to mindlessly obey without having a say. Just makes me wonder what this dude wouldn't do for a lapband. Kinda creeps me out...
