  1. Back in my 20's when i was borderline anorexic i was totally hyper critical of my face. I was actually very pretty and had been approached for modelling on several occasions...but in my mind i was ugly!! I picked apart everything about my face. A therapist told me that "the closer we are to being perfect the more critical we are about ourselves".

This sounds like what you're experiencing.

Im having my mini gastric bypass on April 19...revised from a gastric band.

    Im terrified!!!

Im so afraid of what my social life will be. Will i ever be able to go out socialising with friends at restaurants again?

My band has caused so many problems over the years. I havent eaten a full portion of food since 2009 so im used to small meals.

Have you been able to eat normal foods yet?

My main motivation for surgery is knee pain. ..did you find it just disappeared as you list the weight?

    Congratulations!

  3. Love your story Imagine 1!

I travel a lot too and have been a bit concerned about travel after i have my 'mini bypass'.

I gave had a babd fir 6 years which is about to be revised and it was far more scary travelling with a gastric band.

I travelled with the special syringes in case i needed an emergency empty. The surgeon warned me tgat the increased pressure in the banded stomach when flying made it dangerous to fly with fill in place.

  4. Hi all,

I had GB on Feb 10th & have lost around 9 kilos since.

I'm realising despite the loss, I'm really not contributing much. I barely exercise, I don't measure my portions anymore, I don't journal anything (I wasn't told to by any of my team), I'm able to gulp liquids down & I succumbed to chocolate & a smalllll bit of cheesecake. I'm worried this is all going to eventually bite me on the ass.

I have been feeling emotionally out of sorts lately, so perhaps that's a factor. I also don't want to train too hard & lose weight so quickly that my skin suffers. I know that I should walk every day, but my head says why bother, I'll lose weight anyway. This won't always be the case...I should be blasting through this period for maximum results.

    Can anyone else relate?

Its so good to finally read a comment using kilos! Every post i read i have to convert all the time from pounds to kilos. It would be great if the US used the same weight measurements as the other 6.5 billion people in the world ????

9 kilos since your surgery sounds like a result to be proud of!

It's a big step to have the surgery, so dont beat yourself up about a bite of cheescake. Just remember before surgery you would have had a whole piece of cheesecake and maybe seconds? !

It is never to late to 'get back on track' and start recording your intake and getting exercise....you've had your recovery time so now its time to get to work on the job of losing weight.

Good luck with your journey, and just dont beat yourself up for slip ups along the way!

  5. Me at my heaviest I was 360lbs. 11 months out I'm 220. I try to see the new me by putting pictures side by side... A lot of the times I still see the bigger person.

I know what u mean. I keep some of my old clothes around to remind myself how far I ve come. Its hard when the chart still lists u as overweight and ur doing all u can.
It is hard. Some people are so judgemental. I remember after my first fastric band and i had list 75 pounds...feeling great! Then some rude person called out to me " hey have another burger love!"...it was devastating. I dont eat burgers anyway....but i had basically only eaten yoghurt for 12 months.

Naturally slim people have no idea of our struggle.

  6. Ihi I've been following this post. I'm having my band to bypass surgery on the 22 and thus is the first I've heard of losing slower. . I'm puzzled that you feel no restriction. Has anyone else experienced this?

    That has me very nervous.

Im thinking that because with the band we're used to the feeling of restriction it doesnt feel much different with the bypass.

The slower weightloss would also be related to banders being used to eating smaller portions, so the change in caloric intake is not as extreme.

When you think about going from eating huge 3 course meals to a tiny 6 oz stomach the shock to the system would be much greater = more sudden/dramatic weightloss.

I just hope that the cgange in hormones and reduced interest in food will sustain weightloss over a long period. Unlike the miserable band.

  7. Wow, you look awesome! What a great accomplishment for you!

I'm curious, would you mind sharing the cost for the surgeries you had last December? I am 50, so I know I'll need some help in this arena when I finally get to goal weight... figure I should start a piggy bank now for that! LOL

In Australia we dont pay for our surgery as its covered by our health insurance. I think it would be $10,000 AUD. if i paid myself.

  8. Thanks for your kind words Julie. I made up my mind with the sleeve a long time ago . Bypass looks very appealing but I could not take supplements all my life ( I am terrible at taking prescriptions) and the dumping syndrome was a no go. My issue is on quantity to fill full. I am a social person and enjoy dinner out with colleagues and friends. I will be happier when I am done with half a starter and not have to eat the entire bread basket, 2 heavily dishes and some time dessert. I want this life gone. If the mini bypass works for you great. I am convinced the sleeve is the tool I need . Blessing to you too. Mico

So glad to hear that you have had your procedure Mico and I'm sure you will have success. I look forward to seeing your progress on the forum! Like Europe, Australia is very focussed on eating good quality food...so it has been hard living with my gastric band all these years. Time to move on now so i will see what happens and beat some of my health issues. Bon voyage!

  9. Hi Mico

Your story is really interesting. I am Australian but have lived many years in Europe as I'm married to a Swiss.

Europeans approach food quite differently to Americans. food us so culturally important in Europe and is a major focus of family and socialising. Even though the food is good and nutritious ...as opposed to fast food...its easy to consume too many calories of "healthy" food.

I battled with my body image all my life although i didnt really have an obesity problem until 20 years ago. After years of being anorexic my bidy just rebelled against food and i strated to gain weight at about 5 kilos a year for 10 years. I need to lose 50 kilos!

I had a gastric band operation in 2009. Initially i lost 30 kilos and was going well, but then i gad probkems with my band and started to gain all the weight back.

My gastric band has to be removed and i am going to have it revised to a mini gastric bypass.

I tecommend you look into thus surgery and compare this with the sleeve gastrectomy. All reports show the mini bypass as the "gold standard" in Weightloss surgery.

Please do some research as thete is more tgan 15 years of excellent data to support the bypass. Good luck with your journey. I lost my mother just before a gastric band revision procedure and i understand your pain and longing. I can only say it does get better day by day. Blessings Julie x

  10. Thank you all so so much for all the information and support!!!! I have been really upset and nervous that I was having the issues and no one else was ......the study you jnt mentioned....shame on these band manufacturers for making people go through this! 80% is beyond ridiculous and just plain scary. I agree with UsernameTaken, the scary part is the permanency of the bypass but I am sick and tired of this weight. Hey....we got this right?!?

So have you had your bypass yet Stacylynn?

  11. The surgeon I am seeing told me the same thing!!! He said that too many of his patients and the patients in the practice are having too many issues with the band. I went for a fill to my first surgeon (who moved out of state) last year and the nursing staff had to go find the needle for the fill because there were none on hand. They also called other medical staff in the room to see what a lap band fill looked like because no one has them anymore. I panicked immediately because what do medical professionals know about the band that we don't? I am so over this lap band lol

I am currently waiting for my revision from band to bypass in 4 weeks time.

What really shocked me was finding out that way back in 2010 a Swiss study on gastric bands found that 80% would be removed within 10 years of initial insertion!

So the manufacturers of these bands have been pushing a medical product that they know is dodgy for 6 years. Almost as bad as the tobacco industry!

Having said that I'm still terrified of the bypass because it is so permanent. Any tips or advice on the bypass? How has it impacted on your life...especially when going out with friends?

  12. Wow. Its so interesting reading all your stories from USA. In Australia your Doctor decides whether you need a procedure...and the Insurers cannot refuse ANYONE.

By law the private health insurers must cover everyone without prejudice. And on top of that we have the free public healthcare service "Medicare" that covers all emergency medicine, hospital etc.

The idea of an insurance company deciding what medical care i need is just shocking and would make me so angry!

I have a similar story to you Stacylynn. GB in 2009...list a lot of weight initially and has gradually crept back on. Today i am the same weight as pre GB all those years ago????

I met with my surgeon yesterday and he has schefuled me to remove band and do a mini gastric bypass in 4 weeks.

I hate my band. Had so much trouble but i am terrified about the MGB.

I'm worried about dumping and never being able to eat a piece of French cheese ever again.

I would love sone feedback on what bypass patients can actually eat, and do you feel hungry?

Is it true you just dont feel like eating?

The worst thing about the band is hunger that is always there due to the empty stomach just waiting for food.????

Any feedback on whst you can eat and how you go when dining out would be much appreciated ladies! ☺
