  1. That's a good question lol I know the Bypass is the best option esp with the long term results, but the whole malabsorption really scares me I'm going to attend another support group tonight with a friend of mines who did the lap-band 9 years ago. She is thinking of revising to the Bypass herself. Her surgeon said the lap-band is just like the sleeve and it's a waste of time. We go to the same medical group just see different surgeons. So I guess you guys are right each surgeon is different. I would be concerned about a surgeon who says the sleeve is just like the band and a waste of time. The theory behind the two, restriction of food intake, is the same but that's about it. There are plenty of people, me included, who are amazingly successful with the sleeve. I've lost close to 130 lbs and am 2 years post surgery. I think you need to gather all the information you can and go with the procedure that's right for you. 2. I am currently waiting for a surgery date to convert to bypass from sleeve. I developed significant GERD after my sleeve surgery, I didn't not have it before. I agree with Bufflehead and Inner Surfer Girl. You should ask your surgeon for a clear explanation of the mechanics. When I asked my surgeon, he drew a diagram for me that I still refer to. The short answer is you still have a stomach after bypass surgery. You're left with a smaller pouch and re-routed intestines. Your surgeon should be able to provide you with an easy to understand explanation. If he/she doesn't, keep asking until you understand what is going to be done to you. Good luck!

    Pant sizes?

Started in a 22 and currently wear a 2-6, depending on the brand. I average a size 4 or 27 jean

    Sleeve to Bypass

That's exactly how I feel. I'm so nervous about revising. I love my sleeve Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. Thanks for this response, VSGAnn. Its sad that there is so much misinformation out there that is then repeated like it's the gospel. Not all Bypass people dump on sugar, fried foods or cheese. Bypass isn't necessarily better than VSG. I hope people who are reading these posts pre-op can weed out the posts with bad information and get helpful info from true vets.

    Post-Op Eating

I agree with ISG and it may be stomach acid. Are you taking a PPI? Also, it could be what you're eating. The more dense the Protein, the fuller and more satisfied you'll stay. What are your meals comprised of?
  7. Posts lie these drive me craaaazzzzyyyyy. Just because a person had VSG does not doom them to failure and choosing RNY does not mean you will successfully lose all your weight and keep it off. Both surgeries are nothing more than a TOOL. If you don't learn proper nutrition and develop good eating habits, you WILL NOT succeed. I lost more than 120lbs with my sleeve. I LOVE my sleeve and would give anything in the world to keep it. I'm not revising because I suddenly woke up and saw the light and realized I chose the wrong surgery. I'm revising because I need to to maintain esophageal health While RNY might be the right decision for you, it is not the right decision for everyone and I don't want anyone choosing between the two procedures to be swayed by your one "friend" who didn't succeed with the sleeve. From what you said, it's because she didn't develop good habits, not because the surgery failed her. I guess I'm just cranky today. I am a successful sleever and proud of it!! 8. I hope it never gets that bad for you, but it definitely can. I had no reflux before surgery and I now have 2 spots of esophageal erosion and GERD that is uncontrolled with medication. I never wanted malabsorption, but that's where I'm headed. I hope conversion to bypass cures my problem! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Breakfast ideas.

Can I ask a question? Why are you scared or butter, bacon or sausage? Is it because you're concerned your body won't handle those food well it because they will make you gain weight? In my opinion you need some fat in your diet (fat doesn't make you fat) and there is nothing wrong with a bit of butter, sausage or bacon. I had bacon wrapped shrimp for dinner the other night. It was a delicious, high Protein dinner that fit nicely in my plan. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Water!

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this but I just have to shake my head. The OP has been all over the boards opining on the virtues of RNY v. Sleeve, post op diets, etc. I hope people who read take your opinions with a grain of salt. In my honest opinion, which is being given by someone in their third year post op, you cannot survive on 500 calories a day post op. You will kill an already damaged metabolism. It should not take you 4 days to drink a Protein shake. I also have to shake my head at your surgeon who holds you up as the poster child for safe and effective weight loss on the "tortilla soup" diet. I agree with Daisee and ISG. Bariatric surgery is to give you a reset so you can have a healthy relationship with food. I truly hope you figure this out! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve to Bypass

That is not true about the sleeve. I'm 3 years post sleeve and have maintained a 120+ lb loss. Not everyone regains with the sleeve and not everyone who has bypass dumps or has a problem with sugar/fats. This is just my opinion but I'm tired of other post OP's trying to make sleeve people feel bad for their surgical decision. With that said, I'm in a position where I have to convert to bypass because of severe and uncontrolled GERD. While I know it's the right decision for me, I'll mourn the loss of my sleeve, my intact pyloric valve and the fact thst I don't have to worry about malabsorption. To the OP good luck on your revision and I hope the malabsorption gets you the results you desire Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. I developed severe reflux after VSG. I'm maxed out on PPIs (protonix in the am/dexilant in the pm/ Zantac before bed) and it doesn't control my acid. I'm discussing conversion to bypass with my surgeon and tentatively am looking to an end of June surgery date. I'm tired of sleeping sitting up, tired of coughing up stomach acid, tired of the constant pressure and burning in my chest even on acid blockers. I know there are some who will disagree with this position and claim that VSG will cure reflux, but if I had reflux or GERD before surgery I never would have had VSG. There are a few treatments other than PPIs: the Linx procedure or stretta which for me isn't covered by my insurance and may not solve my problem. Anyway, yes there are treatments available other than PPIs, but I would think long and hard about having VSG if you have a problem with reflux. Good luck to you! Regret

In all honesty I would call your surgeon and explain how you feel. Maybe he or she has a mental health professional on staff or someone they can refer you to. I don't think that not wanting to leave the house is a normal reaction to surgery. I hope you can seek out the assistance of someone to help you through these emotions. Please make the call.
  15. Before surgery they will not let you wear your own nightgown. They will provide you with a gown to change in to when they call you back to the pre-op area. After surgery I wore the same gown and used a second gown on backwards as a robe.

    Breakfast ideas.

My "go to" breakfast choices are ground turkey, pesto and cheese, cubed ham, an egg and cheese; leftover dinner from the night befor. If I'm going for a run, I typically have 1/4 steel cut oats mixed with 1/3 milk, half a carton of greek yogurt and a tbs of Peanut Butter. I agree that breakfast doesn't need to be traditional "breakfast" food.
  17. I would have sent it back.
  18. Suggestions? Stop eating sugar. Get back to basics. Eat dense Protein first. Weigh and measure your food to make sure portion creep isn't happening. Record or log all your food. The basics work!

    Need advice pls....

You've done great! I agree with everyone else. Your surgeon sounds like an unprofessional oaf. He should know better than to place unrealistic goals on patients, many of whom have had a lifetime of failed diet attempts. Yes, this the period of maximum weight loss, but its also the time to change your mindset and develop a new relationship with food. If you're trying to conform your eating to meet his arbitrary goal, you'll never change your mindset in the necessary way. My advice, for what it's worth, is to keep doing what your doing and don't let him and his "goal" derail you! Good luck . . . keep going!!!!
  20. I do the full fat versions (except for my greek yogurt, because I LOVE the Dannon Light and Fit). I would rather eat a bit less and have the real thing than eat a bigger portion of flavorless fat-free food, or food that gets its flavor from additives. Also, fat in food doesn't make you fat and a healthy amount of fats help to keep your appetite in check.

    My doc never mentioned this..

Thank you! Yes, I'm in the 120ish lbs lost range. My weight has been fluctuating because we're trying different food combinations to try and deal with the GERD and my surgeon and NUT wanted me to go higher carb for a while (which is not a good thing for me) so I had some regain. I'm trying to not let that derail me. I'm so happy for you that you're GERD free. It's horrible. My acid was measured at 409% greater than normal. I take a PPI combo of Protonix and Dexilant and I supplement with Carafate and Zantac and yet my Reflux is still out of control. I'm not looking forward to more surgery, but if that's what it takes to cure my GERD so I can get back to the active life I developed post surgery, that's what I'll do. And to anyone pre-op who is reading this, even with all my issues I honestly mean it when I say I wouldn't trade this surgery for anything. The life I lead now is leaps and bounds above what I had at 250lbs. Don't let the fear of something that may never happen stop you for taking the step.

    Soft foods early?

Same here. 1 week Clear Liquids, one week full liquids, one week purée and one week soft foods before given the green light. I made an agreement with myself to do anything and everything my surgeon asked since, to that point, doing it my way wasn't working. So no, I didn't dip or dap in "forbidden" food. I believe you are seeking ratification of your decision, rather than advice from those who came before. Kindle is right, a piece of fish, even fish chewed to high heaven, can get stuck in your raw staple line and cause serious damage. Oh and for the record, the OP's post asked if she was crazy. So, if you don't want honest answers, don't ask the question. Good luck getting through the stages, you may actually need it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My doc never mentioned this..

Unfortunately, I am one who developed GERD post sleeve. I didn't have it before surgery, and if I did, I may have selected Bypass over Sleeve, but I would not have cancelled my surgery entirely. I'm now discussing converting to bypass as a way to control my "out of control" reflux. With everything I'm going through, I'm still grateful for my surgery and the new lease on life it gave me.
