  1. Hello everyone. My lap band surgery went well. When the anesthologist came in, he was talking to me and put something in my IV and I can't remember anything after that. All I remember is waking up. They told me they need to repair a hiatal hernia. I'm at home now and in the worst pain of my life because of the incicions but more because the gas is shooting up to my shoulders. Do you recommend I drink a Protein made shake? Or just wait it out?
I appreciate each and everyone of you and I thank you for being there for me.

I was thinking about you today! Glad you are doing okay. If you feel you are ready for protein and it's on your plan then go for it. Small sips, the smallest you have ever taken and go slow. Yes, the gas pain is BAD. Walk as much as you can and every day will be better then the last!

  2. I was knocked out before being wheeled into the operating room. They gave me something to "calm my nerves" and the next thing I knew I was in recovery.

It's normal to be scared, but you are working with professionals who do this every day. They will take care of you and when you wake up it will be the start of a new life! I hope you can find some excitement in that! Best of luck to you.

  3. You look amazing and no excess skin! Congrats!

Thank you, but don't be deceived, there is excess skin! Mostly my upper arms, stomach, and upper thighs. It's not horrible and I probably wouldn't consider plastic surgery but I'll never be wearing a bikini. I was obese since age 5 so there's no coming back from 30 years of stretched skin.

Im okay with all of this though. I consider it my battle scar, proof I won the fight!

  4. @cderisroth and after you'll remove it. You must go on eating just a bit for don't make you stomach larger right?

Well there is nothing to remove because with the bypass they reduce your stomach by 80-90% and that is permanent.

I would say I ate between 500-700 calories a day for the first 6 months. Currently I'm eating around 1200 calories a day. I don't worry about my stomach stretching because I don't eat too much food at any one time, probably no more than 1 cup or 3-4 ounces of Protein. I've had to really retrain my brain to understand what "satisfied" is rather than full. Before surgery I would stuff myself to the point of being uncomfortable. Now I eat until satisfied then stop. It took a while to learn that!

  5. @@cdeisroth you have the gastric bypass? For how long?

    Your results are amazing!

Thank you! Yes I had gastric bypass in March 2016 so just about 9.5 months ago. My stats are below:

    Starting weight 1/2016 - 261lbs

    Surgery weight 3/2016 - 239lbs

    Current weight 1/2017 - 139lbs

    Goal weight - 136lbs

It did come off very fast for me initially but slowed down a lot these last 3-4 months

  6. Congratulations. I am sure this holiday season was much more enjoyable. Great job.

Funny you say that because last Christmas was my breaking point and I went to my first bariatric seminar 2 weeks later. I was sweating, out of breath trying to cook. I over-ate and was miserable. I would sit on the couch and I'd have to rock back and forth to get back up. It was an aweful night and I knew I needed to do something.

  7. I have a feeling your friend is minimizing the work she really puts into her weight management, I've caught myself doing the same thing with friends and family that are considering surgery. I've been very open about my surgery so people ask me a lot of questions, usually related to how "drastic" my life had to change. When I get these questions I find myself minimizing the changes, because for me they are the new normal and don't seem as drastic anymore. So I say things like "I can eat anything" but what I mean is I can eat a BITE of anything, but I choose not to because weight loss, health and maintenance are my priority. I CAN eat whatever I want, but I don't.

With that said I'm also part of the "eat whatever you want" crew (once in maintenence of course), but in moderation. It seems like you were out for a special occasion so I'm sure what she ate and drank, both in substance and quantity, we're not the norm for her.

I think the best part of your story is that it shows this surgery is not some sort of magic cure all. Once healed, you have to manage your choices and find a balance between diet and normalcy. The restriction does lessen over time, the trick is how we manage it. If she can have a few drinks and a good steak every now and then and still maintain then she is doing something right, she has found the balance.
