I will pray that your surgery goes well.
Make sure you have taken a good before photograph so you will have something to compare it to after surgery.
Consider obtaining a pill crusher and pill splitter. Also have a full range of small measuring spoons/cups to measure meal volume.
After surgery it is important to get up and walk every couple hours. This will help to make your recovery process go smoother. In the hospital ask for an overhead trapeze bar above your bed to help you get up out of bed a little easier.
Your taste buds may change after surgery, so don't stock up too much on food until you arrive home. The key on Protein shakes is to experiment until you find one that you can tolerate. You don't need to love it, just tolerate it.

You guys! I'm one week away from having surgery! (GBP RNY) I feel like I've had months to prepare, I've read every forum post, I've scoured every Pinterest board, I've read every detail about Protein, macros, etc in preparation, but now that I'm 7 DAYS AWAY (OMG!) I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed!
Does anyone have any advice? What should I stock in my house for the week back? What have you all found that was helpful for transitioning back to work? What did you bring to the hospital? I feel like I've been studying for months but now that it's so close, my mind is going blank!
    HELP!!!
    Also OMG I'M SO EXCITED!!!! :) :)

My surgeon wanted me to be checked for a hiatal hernia before surgery, as I've had issues with throwing up after eating for the past few decades.
Well, yes, I do have a hiatal hernia. I also have esophagitis (from long-term GERD) and moderately severe gastritis.
I'm thinking that the surgery should help to eliminate/reduce those issues, and have explained that to my Mom, also reminding her that I am doing this for ME, as esophagitis is known to lead to esophageal cancer, which no one wants. She, of course, did the whole "well, if you hadn't eaten so much for all these years" thing, and my response was "well, that's in the past, and we can't do anything about the past, just the future", to which she grudgingly agreed.
Family. Can't live with 'em, can't make 'em listen the first time.

So I'm in the last stages of getting ready for this surgery, all requirements have been fulfilled, and I'm waiting for my doc to send everything to the insurance company (I hate to bug my support girl, so I'm waiting until Wednesday to call to see if it's been sent to insurance LOL)
I work in an office. I have a sit/stand desk, so I can adjust my position throughout the day if I want/need to. I also have a pretty flexible position, so if I need to go lie down, or leave early I know that I can. I do administrative work, so there's no lifting, and we have an elevator to use. Bathroom isn't too far from my office, and my office isn't too far from the elevator.
I'm really not wanting to take too much time off work. I work in the Energy industry, and it's been hard hit with reductions. I'd like to only take what I absolutely need to take... even if it means coming back on a PT basis.
So, how long were you off from work? Do you think 10-14 days would be enough for a position like mine?

AHHH! I just found out today that my surgery date is March 16th. 3 weeks from tomorrow.
It all seems so fast. I just started this process with an all day appointment at mayo Clinic in November, and the time has FLOWN by.
I had my last visit with the psychologist on Friday and she signed off/discharged me then. I got the call from the surgical scheduler today and, I'm not even going to lie, started freaking out a little (okay, a lot).
Anyone else with March dates? My birthday is March 10th, so I can't think of a better way to usher in 33 than a new me.
I'm starting to get more nervous, but I keep telling myself that it's all for the better.
One preop visit, one lab visit, one bypass diet visit and then surgery. I don't know if anyone else has gone to Mayo Clinic, but they do not mess around. I've had to keep a significant food log (with pre and post-meal feelings) since November, had to cut out any alcohol and most caffeine and had to significantly increase exercise in order to be discharged.
Sorry, I'm kinda freaking out here. All of the forums here have been a massive help thus far, and I hope to post/contribute more as I go through the process.
    WHEEE!

Drink lots of Water, take your water bottle everywhere
Start cutting out soda and cutting down on caffeine
Try working an exercise routine into your schedule (walking 3x a week is a great starting point)
Make sure you're eating 3 meals a day, no skipping Breakfast or lunch.
It's much easier to update/change existing habits than create new ones. If you follow your nutritionists recommendations and begin you changes before surgery it will make your transition much easier.

Welcome! I just had gastric bypass this June. Best thing I've ever done. Congrats on the decision! It's a big deal deciding to have surgery, but so worth it. Any questions please let me know! This is a great site, and a very supportive group

Hi just wanted to introduce myself
My name is Rachel and I'm 27 years old. I've struggled with my weight since early teens and I've recently( within the last 6 months) decided to do the gastric bypass. I'm currently in the process of getting the surgery approval with the testing and whatnot. I'm so excited and nervous to start my journey and look forward to talking with everyone
    Have a great day!

I've worn 5xlt and 6xlt shirts for most of the last 15 years.
Five years ago I became highly motivated to adhere to strict diet and exercise like crazy. 120 lbs of weight dropped and I was down to wearing 3XLT and some 2XLT shirts. Gained it all back and am feeling every ounce of it right now.
Hoping everything lines up and this bypass surgery takes place as hoped in December 2015.
Ideal size was the question.......I saved most of my smaller sized clothes in belief that someday....somehow....I'd get back to wearing them again. Tossing them just seemed like I was giving up the hope.
If I was wearing 2XLT & 3XLT shirts with 120 lbs off........and I truly need to lose 200+ pounds.......then I'm anticipating wearing an XL or XLT sized shirt by the end.
6'4" at 250lbs sure will beat the current 6'4" 450lbs. Lord knows I can't wait to get there.

I'm a bigger boned lady, so I will never be small small and I don't want to be. I have never really looked big. Though I was a size 26/28. I was all hips and booty. Now I'm a size 22. My face has gotten smaller but not much, my chest has gotten smaller. My goal is to be 200 lbs

Man, I gotta tell you, that was a very moving post! I'm less than a month out but I feel unbelievable. I met the surgery half way almost, I lost around 33 lbs pre-surgery and now down another 24 in 3 and a half weeks! We're rollin....
Everything's hanging off me, been hittin Goodwill and such; I refuse to buy a new wardrobe until I'm sure that I've leveled off, maybe around MAy or June, so I'll be saving up..
So good job to you! I know it feels pretty fabulous, I can't believe the reduction in daily pain from back and joint pain that was my companion.

So tonight I was working on my taxes. (FYI- for those that donate your too big clothes, you need to keep really a detailed record of what you donate, when and get receipts!)
I remember right after surgery last spring struggling with the idea of getting rid of my winter clothes since they'd be too big by winter. It was impossible to wrap my head around. Now it's heading to spring again, I looked through my closet and drawers and realized there is not a single item in there from 'before'. Not a shirt, bra or even a panty-- everything is new. (Or like new-- I do thrift stores at times). I was a size 26, and am starting in on 14 now. And again, its hard to wrap my head around the fact that I'll likely have this same 'wardrobe flip' next year this time.
I didn't hate myself before, but I love my new shape and fitness in a different way. I've worked for it and appreciate it. My life was pretty complete before all this, but now It's rounded it out in a way I didn't expect.

I am 32 months post-op RNY surgery. I consider it to be one of the best decisions I ever made. I have written a couple short articles about it. The first one describes my experience in the "Weight Loss" phase. The second describes the "Maintenance" phase. I have also include a before and after photo at the 6 month post-op mark. I have lost additional weight since then but it is unbelievable what can happen in 6 months time.

Pup reacted to Djmohr in Sharing before and After pics finally
As of this week I finally hit a normal BMI and i promised myself when that time came I would finally share some pictures. By the way, I still do not like having my picture taken but before I hid behind everyone and because I was tall it was easy to hide the rest of me. Now I definitely am willing to get in the shot and I no longer cringe when I see the pictures.
The only pics I could find before surgery were taken on a cruise with my hubby, Son and Granddaughter. These were taken 1 month before my bypass.

My after was taken earlier today, down 137lbs and finally at a BMI of 24.9

I'm six months out. Last night I was in the market picking up things and I found my self wandering a bit, staring at all the junk I would have once consisdered buying. It was almost like visiting the scene of an accident, where you analyze it trying to figure where things went wrong. I wasn't tempted, just in awe of how much junk I'd have once piled in my cart. I'm healthier, off blood pressure meds and my overactive bladder is a thing if the past. Keep encouraged folks, it's possible and so worth it! I'm certainly not perfect and still have my struggles... But have found far more strength than I thought I had in this journey so far.

I am beyond excited right now!!
I just finished the last of my "homework" yesterday with lab work and had an appointment coming up this week to determine what comes next... thinking that's when they'd submit for insurance approval and then I'd have an eternity to wait and see if it went through.
IMAGINE my surprise when I get a call today and they said that not only had they already submitted for approval, but it was approved and I have my date set for 2 WEEKS!!!! March 15th, baby! That's one wonderful birthday present to myself (March 7th!)
