How soon after surgery to exercise???

So nice to hear other's experiences. Thank you! I decided (after trying to jog) to wait another week and keep up with the hill walking and try again next week. I got a horrible tummy cramp after a few minutes of jogging, it felt like more the one you get when you are out of shape, but I wasn't sure so I stopped jogging, caught my breath, and was fine. I find I'm easily out of breath, amazing what not exercising for just a few weeks does to you.

    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

And I thought nobody replied to what I asked! Thanks... I am so out of it lately. I'm being such a ditz, can I still blame it on the surgery drugs? I must have missed this entire page of posts. wishing you restriction! I love it when people talk about these fills/restriction I'm so new to the game. I'm starting to realize I don't have restriction. I'm on food now and I can eat large bites if I'm not paying attention out of habit. I try hard to eat small, chew 30 times etc but occasionally I'll take a normal size bite like before and nothing happens. I do get full fast and stay full for 2-3 hours so its doing something.
  4. I was recently banded, which I am very happy about! If anyone has any hints, ideas, things they did to help hide the skin and tummy apron PLEASE let me know. I'm open to anything!!! A brief history if you're interested: We have 2 beautiful dd's. My first birth was an emergency c-section that resulted in a large apron of skin, sort of deformed tummy because it was done so fast. I lost all the weight but my tummy looked awful-like an alien. However I didn't look "pregnant" after the weight loss it was more just jiggly loose skin. After baby #2 I initially started to loose my baby weight and the skin and apron was even more stretched out. People began to ask me if I was pregnant and make comments. It was almost easier being fat.......so I know this will be a problem for me emotionally/psychologically as I loose weight. I saw 2 Dr's and a plastic surgeon who told me the only thing I could do was plastic surgery. It was very discouraging and I know this is part of my problem with yo-yoing. I have secondary infertility issues. DH and I always wanted a large family and when people would ask if I was pregnant or comment-very difficult for me to deal with. The happy news is that I have dealt with my infertility and I don't think it will hurt me to have comments or questions about me being pregnant. We are in the process of finalizing our 2 year old's adoption, we've had him since a baby and are foster/adopt parents. We plan on adopting at least one more baby but not through foster care. After adoption expenses and with dh being Veterinarian/his pay vs. student loan debt take its toll on family finances. I could never justify going into debt for a tummy tuck...wish I could. We will not be in a a position to afford plastic surgery for some time after I loose the weight so I want to think ahead and not selfsabotage. Thanks!
  5. Lost 2 more pounds. I expect things to slow down as I am now 2 weeks post op and feeling better, feeling hungry...and won't have a fill until August 8th. Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

My surgeon okay'd me today to start lifting my son . I was late and so didn't have a lot of time to talk to him about jogging and he had to leave. I have been walking everyday but would like to start week one today and into next week. How soon after surgery before you did something like this? I know its 6 weeks before I begin weight lifting, thats fine. I feel okay, no pain, everything seems to be healing wonderful. I plan on taking it slow and if anything hurts at all I will stop. I also will be pushing my son in a jogging stroller. I've been pushing him for the past week without a problem, its very easy to push, less then 10 pounds. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
  7. Thank you for the suggestions. I have seen Spanx in stores but haven't heard much about them. I'm willing to try anything. Do they stay in place? I've tried department store girdle type undergarments of all types and they always move down when I am wearing them ending up making the bulges look even worse. I find myself always adjusting them and feel very conspicuous.

    Bad breath, icky mouth

You most likely have thrush if you have a white coating in your tongue that can't be brushed off. I would call your primary doc ASAP, it only gets worse. I posted above but I mean it went from irritating to VERY painful ulcers.

    Bad breath, icky mouth

I was given a prescription of tablets that I took, 5 for 5 days. It took two days for my mouth to stop killing me and 3 days for it to visibly go away. I'm a foster mom and I have had a few babies who had thrush, mine didn't look like their's but there was a white coating on my tongue, I also started with one sore on my tongue it multiplied FAST. I would get it checked out ASAP! Thrush only gets worse. It went from kind of irritating to very painful ulcers in my mouth to the point it hurt to eat and to talk. I guess when your body's chemicals get mixed up this sort of thing can happen. Niastatin kills bacteria, good and bad-it could have caused a chemical imbalance that lead to a yeast infestation, gross but, anyway I would get it checked out.

    Bad breath, icky mouth

Just make sure its not Thrush! It may be because you are Ketosis from not eating enough. I had the same problem last week (post op), it started with icky breath, then white on my tongue that would not brush off with a tooth brush, then sores so bad it hurt to talk or eat all over my mouth. I finally went to my Dr. in misery. It took 2 days of treatment for my mouth to stop hurting. I was told it was due to the antibiotics given during surgery. It kills the good bacteria in your mouth and then the fungus/yeast starts to grow.

    Atkins v/s South Beach

I have tried both diet plans. This is all pre-band. When I stuck with Atkins as it is written in the book I had a lot of success, lost 80 pounds. You should read both books. As mentioned in an excellent post above, there are 3 phases to Atkins. My mom has maintained a significant weight loss for several years following the Atkins plan. She is in the maintenance phase, she eats whole grains (in moderation), fruits and vegetables (to her hearts content.) She steers clear of complex carbs. I was able to tolerate 30-40 carbs a day and loose up to 2-3 pounds week, that is still very low carb count that doesn't include high carb/starchy vegies or a lot of fruits, I did have berries and nuts. The induction phase is 20 carbs a day for 2 weeks, if you have insulin issues, you will feel amazing (hunger goes away) but it gets REALLY old after awhile. I don't think that induction was ever intended to be long term. I maintained my Atkins weight loss for 2 years, the longest I was ever able to succeed with an eating plan. South beach was not as easy for me to stay on because my carbs were too high for me to avoid having cravings. I also felt the initial 2 weeks on South Beach seem a lot like the initial 2 weeks on Atkins. I almost felt it was a copy of Atkins only they switched a few things up. Hope that helps.

    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

Well I walked Monday for 30 minutes. Oh Renewed, I am also a foster mom, we have two dd's, almost 12 and 8, and our 2 year old who we are adopting through foster care, he's been with us since an baby and we are in the middle of all the red tape right now. We plan on adopting again, but not through foster care. Today I did a whole lot of nothing but was busy and moving. I ended up with thrush (huge painful white and red sores all over my mouth), I've had several foster babies with thrush over the years. Now I know why they were so fussy. I had to go the Doctor at the same time my kids 6 month dental check up. My oldest dd is a competative gymnast and she is has gymnastics camp and my middle dd is just starting little league. Thank goodness our 2 year old is not signed up for anything! My mom is here helping me out or I would be nuts. DH is no help, although I love him, his work schedule is hectic. I'm still pretty sore and my primary Dr wasn't able to see me so I saw a Dr who was very curious about my surgery, he wanted to take a look to see how I was healing, felt my abdomen and dug in to find the port. Why??? I have NO idea. It hurt for a couple hours after the appointment. I wanted to slap him... I was jogging prior to surgery for 15-20 minutes 3 times a week so I think I may be able to do this by the end of the program, for now I'm walking. I meet with my surgeon next week and hopefully I will be given the green light for exercise soon. You are all very motivating!!!

    severe shoulder pain

I have this as well, it was so bad that I was in tears and pain meds DO NOT help. I had NO IDEA!! Walking helps, the heat pad helps. I had my dh pat my back (actually more like pound it) while I was pacing like he was burping me and that seemed to help. I had a tip from a nurse to try hot Water with a wedge of a lemon and some sweetner for gas in general. That is usually given at the hospital if you stay overnight, but I didn't spend the night so I didn't get it. I tried the lemon thing. It helped with my burping/gas when I eat but not the shoulder pain. For sleep I use the heat pad, it helps me not feel the "pinch" gas pain. I'm open for any more tips. Its better today, but its still fairly annoying. I still can't take deep breaths.

    6/18/08 Bandsters Club

Please count me in! I was banded 6/24/08. Not quite as far along as you are in the healing process, please don't tell my dh about sex . Not ready for that just yet. I have to admit until today I was fairly miserable. I had two hernias repaired so I'm not sure if that is why or if its just me. The last few days experienced a lot of nausea and gas pain. Today I feel like I'm going to be human again Would love to share this journey with a few others.

Don't think I made myself clear, I won't be jogging until Dr. okay's, most likely not until at least 3 weeks out. Still I hope its okay if I join you ladies.

    Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

I sooooooo want to join even though I was banded June 24th.... I've got the green light to walk, but I know I"m supposed to take it easy. My surgeon said by week 2 I should be okay to exercise but no weight lifting or anything too hard until week 6...but like I said I'm itching to get started. I've been fairly active so this shouldn't be a huge stretch for me. If its okay, I'm going to make my goal to finish a 5k whether that be walking most of the way or combination of walking jogging. Thanks for starting this challenge!
  18. Luu2008.........219..........189....... I was banded this week!. I tried another challenge pre-band, did not do well (actually gained a few pounds) now I have my "tool" and am ready to start. I won't have a fill until August so hopefully I will be able to stay on target, right now I don't have any hunger, a lot of gas pain and am walking like crazy.
  19. I was researching diabetes (dad with type 2 diabetes and I'm experiencing same symptoms) when I stumbled on information concerning the LapBand procedure. I have struggled with my weight since my first baby was born 10 years ago. I have a family history of obesity and have fought my entire life, so tired of being hungry. Very much a lifetime yo-yo dieter. I am at my current highest weight. The LapBand is only something I am thinking about doing at this point but from what I have read I feel this is a lifetime solution to my obesity issues however will not consider unless insurance will cover. If anyone has any insight to my situation please let me know. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield NY PPO plan. My BMI is 37 I suspect I have type 2 diabetes, though not diagnosed For the last 3 months I have experienced ankle, knee, and lower back pain, one back injury, and two sprained ankles, all from light exercising...which I was doing to try and loose weight !

    BMI below 40 insurance?

Update! I was approved!!!! My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. My surgery date was set BEFORE my insurance approval and I am told this pushed Blue Cross to expedite their decision. My BMI was not 37 it was 38 (almost 39) My scale at home was wrong. So I gained a few pounds and by the time I went to Bariatric Dr I was a 40 BMI. I know its not the best way but after talking to a few people with my insurance it was the only way for me to be approved and its only because I was dieting that I wasn't already a BMI of 40 pus...so I didn't feel guilty gaining a few pounds. Information that may help others, I did not have a 5 year obesity record like my insurance company required, but I yo-yo'd from morbid obesity, obese, to overweight BMI's for the past 8 plus years. So it was thanks to my primary Dr. and Blue Cross for allowing her to write up my history based on my experience and knowledge rather then medical documents that I ultimately was approved.
