  1. I am so hella sick of protein shakes. Having to force myself to drink them to get my protein, as the powder makes pre-made pudding and yogurt taste funny. Won't get cleared for puree/soft until Wed afternoon. I'll get through this, but last night I seriously wanted to suck the salt off of a cracker my hubby was eating. LOL. Chew and spit makes more sense in my head now. LOL

How about making some bone broth, adding some nutritional yeast to increase the protein, then drinking it either hot or cold?? Might be a nice savory change.

I used to drink the Unjury chicken broth a lot as well. It was a nice change from all the sweet protein drinks. I still drink it once in awhile.

      theantichick

The Unjury soup was ok, but not great, and I ran out of my samples. We're working with different methods of getting protein powder in broth or boullion, that's better but it's tricky with the powder. I picked up some premier protein, it's better. I'll get through it. :)

  2. One week out. Working from home is going well. I think I'll be able to handle the office 3 days next week. Finding myself just not hungry, having to set reminders on my phone for drinking and protein and walking around. Which is what I'd hoped for, but it makes it a struggle to get in enough.

    1. Valentina

      Valentina

five years out and I still don't get hungry. Once a "routine" for eating/drink gets established it will become easier for you. You're going "Maaavelous, Daaaling". really--great job!

  3. Met fluid goal yesterday, need to keep it up and get the protein intake up. Just don't feel like eating/drinking, but need to get in the habit. :) Otherwise doing really good, feeling more energetic today, and arthritis is even less pain than it has been. Still working from home, which was a good choice. :)

  4. Well, missed my fluid/protein goals yesterday. Hit a point where I just didn't want to drink anymore. I'm definitely running a fluid deficit and need to re-commit today to get my upper goal in. Am swallowing almost normal now, so there's really no excuse. And I'm SUPER glad I decided to work from home this first week post-op. I'd have had to call in sick today if I'd had to face getting into business dress and doing my hair/makeup. LOL.

      LipstickLady

You will totally get the hang of it in a weeks or three. I drank a lot of 50/50 water Gatorade (not G2! blech!!). I couldn't drink plain water at all. I also poured my protein drinks over 20oz of crushed ice. It made them MUCH more palatable and I got in an extra 20oz of water.

    2. theantichick

      theantichick

Yeah, I mixed it up today because I feel like I'm coming down with a cold... drank some chicken bouillon and that really did the trick... sucked down 8oz of that in about 30 min, and then turned around and sucked down another 8 oz of water in the next 30 min. Guess I either needed something hot, needed the salt, or needed something different. :) So I'll hit my goal today for fluid, no problem. I was starting to get mildly dehydrated, so it's good timing. :D

      Djmohr

I totally get the needing to change things up with warm and cold, sweet and savory. For me it is the only way to get it all in.

Glad you are doing so well. Congratulations!

  5. I've been resting and focusing on fluids and protein. I can't post status updates from my phone, and hadn't felt like getting the laptop out. :) I've gotten a minimum of fluids in each day, but not up to goal, and haven't been able to get protein in well. But yesterday was better than the day before, and today has started off really well. I'm able to drink more, and should meet goals today. Pain has been worse from my arthritis than the surgery since day 3, which is annoying but I'll take it. Working from home this week, so I should be able to keep drinking like I should. Followup and purees coming on the 31st. :)

I am glad to see the progress you're making. you seem like you are doing well, and making good progress. I have arthritis in my spine diagnosed since surgery, just talked to the NP at my visit this week about starting a supplement to help me with the pain. will probably order it this week to give it a try. I don't like to feel so much physically better in so many areas and to be held back because of that, you know?

    2. Caribear

      Caribear

Thank you for the update, it's good to hear from you. I hope things continue to improve, and that your arthritis symptoms start to let up a little bit. Heal quickly, my friend!

You're quite a "ray of sunshine" amidst all of the WLS regret stories. You got this! :)

  6. I can't figure out how to post status updates from my phone, and didn't pull my laptop out while I was at the hospital. My doc keeps us overnight to make sure we're tolerating fluids and protein shakes, so I got home about 1pm today. Am sore... yesterday it was epigastric today it's that abdominal muscle they split to take the stomach out. But it's not too bad, I've had zero nausea and only one hiccup fit (boy that hurt). I'm learning how big of sips I can take, and trying to stay hydrated. Took SIX sticks for my bloodwork this morning, because I slept more than I drank yesterday.

Ok. Ok, get your slimming arse up off of the "Losers' Bench" and get on with the rest of your joyful life! You have SOOOO got this I'm surprised you were allowed to sit at all on "The Bench". With your attitude and determination you will probably become the new "poster gal" for WLS. You've worked hard ---learned hard and seem to have more common sense than anyone in my family :). It will be a joy to follow your journey. You're off to a wonderful start! Congrats!

Half the fun of any journey is the planning. You, my friend are doing a smacked up job of going into your WLS with eyes wide open and your head in the right place. I look forward to observing your joyful and successful journey.

  10. 5 days to go... am starting to get a little more nervous. Not about the surgery, I've had several (though no abdominal). Just the whole "new life" thing. :D It's going to be great!

I hope you have a great deal of success. I have come to believe I do not like fish due to all the PCB warnings about not eating fish when I was a little girl. somehow I got that groove stuck in my brain. as an adult I try different seafood when my husband has it, but I really don't like it. I keep trying though.

    2. theantichick

      theantichick

Yeah, I try but I physically gag with most non-starchy vegetables, and can't force myself to swallow without puking. That's the reason I started seeing a therapist, I needed to fix this whether I had the surgery or not. She's not a huge fan of WLS, but respects my choice and approved of the thought I had to use the post-op food progression as a sort of re-feeding/re-parenting kind of experience to try and reset my taste buds and deal even more with the food reaction.

      doh. I typed post-op when I meant to type pre-op. I *wish* I was 1 week post. :) LOL #imadork

  14. Pre-op testing today, continuing to slug along the pre-op diet. Found out how versatile the unflavored powders are. (Yeah, I'd know that if I'd actually try all the stuff I read... sue me. LOL)

I've lost about 3 lbs, looks like. I'm trying to be conservative because my scale seems to weigh 3-5 lbs lighter than the doctor's scales. My scales say I've lost about 5. I could be eating cleaner dinners, but it's a heck of a lot cleaner than the way I have been eating, so I know it's an improvement.

I second Valentina's suggestion. I have this problem every month before shark week. :P

  17. Preop Day 3 was good. Managed to make good choices eating out even. Now for the weekend.

  18. Day 2 of the pre-op diet went much better than Day 1. Still got headachey and groggy, but it wasn't as bad. Now for Day 3 and the weekend challenge!!

    1. Sharyn

      Sharyn

I'm on day 2 also. Not headachy but hungry and crabby, read B****y! I AM HUNGRY ALL THE TIME! I can't wait for surgery, maybe then I won't feel like this. I keep trying to be busy, and that helps a little.

    2. Christinamo7

      Christinamo7

the weekend challenge indeed! the liquid diet after surgery was the hardest part for me, but I would imagine it is even more so before surgery.

  19. Day 2 pre-op. Yesterday went pretty good. Learned a lot, made some not-great-but-not-horrible choices. Today will be better.

  20. 1st day of 2 week pre-op diet today. Did "dry runs" Mon & Tues, and didn't make it through. I think I can, I think I can...

Oh my gosh. This was a rough day. Headachey, brain foggy, tired, and hurting pretty badly. I did eat a protein bar instead of a protein shake for one meal. And my "sensible dinner" wasn't the best choice, but it also wasn't horrible. I did drink a huge amount of water (and had to pee constantly) and managed a whole heck of a lot better than I actually thought I would. Learned a bit about how I need to space my protein drinks through the day. Tomorrow will be better. :)

  21. Oh, I hate insurance companies (reimbursement problem, not a problem with the surgery approval or anything... just terribly frustrating)

    1. WLSResources/ClothingExch

      WLSResources/ClothingExch

There's a statute. You're supposed to hate your insurance companies along with your banks, phone company and utilities. Also most of your municipal gummint depts.

  22. It's Monday. I'm trying to stay upbeat, so I'll leave it at that. ;)

  23. chronic pain sucks monkey balls

    1. #9grammy

      #9grammy

Yeah the chronic pain is the worse kind. I had to go off Celebrex and baby aspirin 7 days before surgery. Oh my the fibro was horrible as well as every arthritic bone in my body! Even the liquid vicodine didn't help much except for the incisions. Wish I would've done this before all the chronic pain set in!

    2. Djmohr

      Djmohr

It is not fun that is for sure. I am finally off all the crap they had me on for the last year trying to deal with my spine pain. I have Oseteo Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthrits. They had me on a fentanyl patch, desiprimine, Lyrica, Cymbalta, cyclobenzaprine all at the same time. I was drugged out and barely functioning yet my pain was still severe. I decided enough of this crap and made them start weaning me off. I have been off all of it besides the muscle relaxer. That is the only thing that actually helps my pain.

Now i see a new pain specialist on wed they are talking about trying Botox in the muscle below my right shoulder blade. Anyone tried that?

    3. Djmohr

      Djmohr

It took me 3 months to wean off of all of it too. I still have severe pain but at least I am alert and semi functional. I spend a lot of time in the swimming pool because I don't feel pain in there. I wish I had a job that I could swim to. LOL. For me, no work until they get that pain resolved at least to a tolerable level
