What was the greatest gift you ever gave ?

Hmm - my grandfather died of cancer 2 years ago January. He had golfed all his life. When my parents met and married, my grandfather (maternal) told my dad he would have to learn how to golf before he'd be allowed to marry my mother. Anyway -- his favorite golfer was Tiger. To make a long story short I wrote Tiger a letter about my grandfather, his story, why he liked him so much, etc. and received *3* autographed pictures signed to my grandfather. I gave them to him on hs last xmas, about 2 weeks before he died. He was so proud to show those pictures off to people... Some people at the pro shop offered him something crazy like $10k for the three pictures (apparently he *never* does autographs) but he wouldn't hear of it. Once I won a family a house, but it asn't for xmas. I knew of a family that had been struck with tragedy after tragedy - truly the saddest story I'd ever heard, let alone witnessed. I was friends with one of their sons in highschool (he was swining over a lake to jump in, got tangled, and accidentally hung himself over the lake - and that's just the tip of the iceberg for this family). Anyway, I heard on the radio that (now I can't remember the name of the group) some group had built a house, flully handicapped accessible, stocked with groceries, etc. and were going to give it away to the winner of an essay contest about what it means to be human. I figured what the heck, wrote & submitted the essay with the intention of winning for them... it won, I won the house, and I gave it to the family. Aww shucks...

Part 2 feeling even MORE Stupid...

What do you guys think it is about dark meat turkey? It's more moist than white meat, and IMO easier to chew up. A texture thing? I know - no one knows - but I have to try and figure it out anyway.
  4. I'm curious why your Dr. suggested bariatric surgery - and that's not me being cycnical, that's me having a friend who went through something similar. Here's what makes me wonder: "when I went back to only eating one healthy meal a day I gained every pound back and am still gaining." This tells me that food intake isn't the cause of your weight problem, but something medical is. I had a friend who was in the exact same spot, who chose RNY at her doctor's recommendation. The kicker being - without GB, she was aready eating about the same as what she would with GB. "One healthy meal," especially since you're exercising, is not going to cause weight gain. There is something other than food causing your weight gain and the lap-band isn't going to address those issues. My friend, now about 2 years post-surgery, is still morbidly obese only now she's also suffering from LT side effects of her procedure, and has all the other negatives of having her operation. I'd hate to see you in the same spot. Just seems like they're treating the symptoms not the cause...
  5. I was told that it's not permanent because it can come out, but it should be considered permanent unless something critical happens.

    Bowel Obstructions

I don't know if it's band friendly but flax seed is a great fiber supplement. I used it religiously when I was on Atkins (I followed the super strict induction phase for over a year). I would by the ground kind and use it as a topping for foods, or make pancakes or muffins from it. If it's band-friendly I have some killer recipes.

    indiana law on obesity

I'm sorry if it's not what you want to hear, but I'm just trying to help. What you're seeing does not indicate it's for public employees because you are not seeing the full version, you are seeing a very very small piece of a larger document. 5-10-8 is a provision for "Group Insurance for Public Employees." The part that I believe has interested you, "...the state shall provide coverage for nonexperimental, surgical treatment by a health care provider of morbid obesity" is part of Chapter 8 - for public employees. You can find Chapter 8 (title intact) here.

    Are you a public employee?
  9. I know it varies, and there is no rule or guideline other than "when you eat too fast" or "when you don't chew well." But from my readings here, it seems like it occurs a LOT more frequently than I would have thought. I know some people may do it daily and others may never do it, but how often do you do it - just on average? Once a day? Once a week? Month? As you can tell, I'm absolutely dreading this aspect of the band... (Sorry if this is a beaten horse, I searched but couldn't find any matches for frequency...)

    How often do you PB?

I read a lot of people saying they "vomit" or "cough up," which I equate to vomit. Do you think they really mean that, or is it a colloquialism for PB?

Do You Ever Wish You WEREN'T Banded?

This is a great read for people (like me) who are in research mode. Honestly from what I've read here in the last month or two I figured I would have seen a lot more "yes" than I have. Very interesting to track this and read others' replies...

    What kind of pets?

Our baby is a male poodle, red with a white chinnagin, chest and a few white toes. I love dogs but DH is allergic. He always did well with a poodle my parents used to have so we gave it a shot and his only regret is not getting one sooner. I named him Mr. Hobbs. We also have 330 gallons of saltwater reef tank. Up until very recently we also had my ball python from when I was a kid (Juba) and an Abyssinian guinea pig (Rodman) that I gave to an old workplace, then took back once I saw how they were treating it.

    I am GAINING weight

Believe it or not - drinking more water is one of the best ways. Lowering sodium, avoiding hot weather, etc. My mother retains fluid so much that she's in a prescription water pill, but you can get them OTC too, both pharmaceutical and herbal.

    Which bands are eroding?

I can't find the thread but I read something maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago where it was tallied that all the cases of erosion were MX surgeries. Then again maybe it was all a dream, 'cause I sure can't find that thread now...

    Natural Cures

Actually yeah, I'm a little familiar with it, but I personally, based off what little I know, wouldn't use "scientology" and "wellness" in the same sentence! Trust me, I'm the least likely person in... well, probably the entire Midwest, to get into a theological argument. I have put way too much study (for classes, not because I'm bored) toward ethics in psychology and science, and scientology has come up more than once during discussions (on the wrong side of the tracks, if you know what I mean). But I'm certainly no expert. This as all purely as I understand it... Auditing is maybe best thought of as a scientologist's approach to therapy, but from what I understand it relies on a prescribed set of questions that the "auditor" asks of the "pre-clear" (someone who is not yet clear about life, aka needing auditing). Now, if you ask critics of scientology, they'll tell you about the "e-meter" that is used during auditing, which they believe is a form of aversion therapy (shock) designed to "help" the "pre-clear" find their way by applying electrical shocks to the "pre-clear". The downside of that being... "yeah, sure, I'll accept Xenu into my heart of you quit shocking me because it's only going to take so many zaps before I'll believe anything you tell me to." On the flip-side, scientologists claim it's harmless. Here's more info. Here's the flip side. Oh please let me continue to be handy for something!

    who else has done this???

The fat visual always gets me. I've seen it tons of times in tons of places - a synthetic chunk of human fat that's supposed to represent what 8 lbs of fat looks like. I've even gone so far as to picture it and look at my body figuring - "Yep, I have one of those here, two of those here, one here, four here... yep! That about adds up to the amount of weight I have to lose!" Of course I can't find a pic now but it looks similar to what the guy in this picture is holding.

    Natural Cures

Natural cures certainly have their place. I use several. Never bought the book that started this thread, it sounded too gimicky to catch my interest, but I have no doubt it contains some useful information. Unfortunately everything has two sides. Scientology is modern-day gnosticism, from its theoretical teachings. If you want the short and sweet of it: And from wiki:
  19. I haven't had the surgery, but I've been researching it for a very long time so here's my 2 cents. No, the point of this surgery is to remove the extra fat - a large portion of it, anyway. Do you mean skin? If you mean skin, then no, you still don't have to have another surgery. Some people whose skin has remained stretched will opt to have plastic surgery to fix it, but it's not something anyone has to do. This is a very broad question. "Problems" can range from post-surgical complications to poor mental adaptation to the lifestyle & resulting changes, to relationship issues that come from the same. Is there something specific you're looking for? Yes, and no. Often pre- there is a prescribed diet, and post has very strict guidelines but not sctructured in the sense of "eat this and this at this time of day." I don't know. Most surgeries have a weight threshold for the patients' safety, as well as the doctor's physical ability to perform the sugery. I would imagine this procedure isn't very different, but that's only my best guess. You're in the right place, but you might get more respones if you avoid the red caps... the whole netiquette thing. "Yelling" messages are often ignored. Good luck! If you weren't nervous, that would be very abnormal.

    I am GAINING weight

The important thing is that while gaining weight, which is a measure of your body's total mass, you're not gaining fat. With what you're eating, it's physically impossible to gain 2# of fat in that amount of time. It's critical to see & understand the difference there. Weight does NOT equal fat. The most common cause of rapid weight gain is Water retention. There are tons of things out there that cause this: menstruation (typically you start to retain 2 weeks prior and hold it until a few days after), eating salty foods, not drinking enough water, medication, diet, season/temperature, etc. This is why scales have killed so many diets. Someone could have lost 10# of fat, but retained 12# of water, and they think "Well crap, if I'm giving all this up and *gaining* 2# screw it, I'm going to McDonald's!" If you want a true measure of what's going on, rely on measurements and body fat analysis. Scales really don't tell you anything other than what everything in and on your body weighs at any given point in time.
  21. I know I am! And I *think* some of you are too. Maybe we can keep this thread going and share info, answers we get, local resources, etc.? Online support is one thing but it's a little "closer to home" when people are... well, closer to home. I'm in the northeast area of Kansas City, about halfway between Worlds of Fun and KCI... very close to Liberty. Where are you guys at?

Who else here is in research mode?

I used to be a dorector in a nursing home and I saw fat people all the time. Hmm... oh well!
  23. I should know this, but do not. I've never had surgery before but understand there are always associated risks such as infection, rejection, allergic reactions, etc. I also understand that some of the people who seek this surgery have delicate physical conditions that put them at higher risk for complications and/or mortality during the operation (heart problems, blood issues, etc.) I read so much about the risks of surgery, and the minor risks are obvious. I tend to associate major risks (e.g. death) with people who are not in good shape or have pre-existing conditions... even though I know there have been healthy people go under who they cannot revive. Are there additional risks that are related specifically to having a lap-band procedure?

    Xbox 360

What really stinks is that most companies won't release product C until product D is already in development, or testing. It's a great marketing strategy, but really sucks for John Q. Public who is the one forking out the $ each time the latest and greatest is invented. Trust me, they were working on the marketing for the 360 before the original had its big release. That's how they guarantee continued revenue. It bites!

    Puppies!!!!!!!

Hi my genre, We have a puppy and he wouldn't take kindly to any other additions (nor would DH's allergies) but I know several people in KC, Springfield, Columbia, etc. who are dog fans and could send them a message to help you find them homes if you don't find them homes here.
