Keto Diet with weight loss surgery - What are your thoughts about it?
π Ίπ Έπ Όπ Όπ Έπ ΄π Ί replied to erics300's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
The Ketovangelist way of keto doesn't have you mind your calories in that way. Check this link out https://www.ketovangelist.com/the-calorie-hypothesis/ Calories are more of a guide to make sure you don't drop below your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Most folks do well taking an average of their BMR and maintenance calories and using that number as a guide to create their macros. Here's an excellent TDEE calculator https://tdeecalculator.net/ (just don't let it make your macros - it's WAY off) Constantly eating below your BMR causes stalls and gains so that happy medium between your BMR and maintenance seems to prevent that and keep you burning fat and sparing muscle. Have you found an FB group for bariatric folks doing keto? There has to be one. I'm not sure how pre-op keto will translate to post-op since most post-op folks are eating low fat. I'm sure I'll eventually be seeking out a group. Let me know if you find one you like. -

OMG you poor thing I think IT surely has the ability to help. Some folks are kind of sensitive to the oil and it gets your guts burbling. The only way to know is to try it out. I sure hope it can help you. -

I've really never run into constipation because I use A LOT of MCT oil. At least 4tbsp in my morning coffee. And I also take electrolyte supplement capsules. They work so well I almost have too much spit in my mouth sometimes LOL You might add some MCT oil to your food if your tummy can handle it. If you're the slightest bit sensitive you'll realize it quickly and will probably have that constipation ease up a bit. Edit: Also, there are some MCT oil capsules. They're usually only about 1g fat per capsule no matter the brand. -

Well said! And yes, you can totally do keto without a meter. I generally can tell when my ketones are above 1.2+...you get that "buzz". Ya know what I mean? It's an energy that you can feel from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. It's a great feeling. Mainly bought a meter because I'm a big fan of experimenting. Sounds like you're doing an awesome job! Keto on, man! -

My dietician suggested Doc Hale unflavored protein that you can add to basically anything. I haven't needed to try it yet, but it's on my list of things to buy when the time comes. Here's the linky https://dochalenutrition.com/ -

I started putting the Syntrax Nectar to Go packets in my coffee today. 1 packet per 8oz of coffee. Quite tasty. I mix with a handheld milk frother and it dissolved instantly. It does get a little frothy, but will die down. I found I had to add some stevia (Pyure) to sweeten it up...but for someone that has already had surgery, it might be sweet enough for you. -

@SteveT74 You're my kinda dude! You have this keto thing down! Way to go! You're right though...from my time on here and hearing what other have to say, I sounds like eating true keto with bypass might be harder to pull off considering the diet requires you eat high fat and moderate protein. Who knows though? I think if you can eat at least eat a 1:1 fat/protein ratio you'll be good. I sure as heck will try when the time comes! You're also right about pee sticks. They're worthless. If you're peeing out ketones, your body isn't using them for energy. Also, if you're dehydrated you will pee ketones so they're not reliable at all. When it comes to measuring what your body is creating itself and using for energy, it's going to be blood ketones. Pee sticks may be good for diabetics or something, but if you're going to eat a true ketonian diet, get a KetoMojo meter to test your blood. It's an excellent investment and easy to use. We need to keep in touch -
Resting Metabolic Rate test

It's not required for surgery, just something I wanna do and my surgeon's office offers them. They apparently strap you down to an EKG and some sort of breathing machine that determines how many calories you burn at rest. It has to be done fasting. Anyone ever had this sort of test before? -

HAH! That's insane! My work "brothers" will be all over this. My team is me and 3 other guys - we're like family They call me rapid-fire so I sneeze enough as it is....I can already hear the new nicknames flowing in! I wonder if anyone has ever sneezed themselves to death -
Just read that "the absorption of CO2 across the peritoneum is normally eliminated through the lungs because of its high aqueous solubility and diffusibility..." Now it makes sense! The CO2 gas is just absorbed by the lining of your abdominal cavity and excreted through the lungs when you breathe. It's not literally "pushed out". That's why the spirometer is so important or doing activity that gets your breathing and heart rate up. The spiro gets you to breathe in deep to fill your lungs to max capacity, hold, then exhale....slowly eliminating the gas from the body.
-
I recently read that the use of a spirometer somehow helps "push" the gas out. I haven't had surgery yet so this topic always baffles me. How does it get pushed out of your body when the gas is inside the abdominal cavity?

Please share your love or horror stories regarding chewable multivitamins vitamins. I'm leaning towards ProCare Health w/ 45mg iron because it's a one-a-day. Not planning on taking them yet, but I'm making plans for what to try first when the time comes. -

I'm nowhere near 22 anymore, but I'm with @Honeybee22 You don't owe anyone a darn thing. Tell who you know in your heart needs to know. This journey is about you, no one else and if they can't accept that you're doing this to improve your health, then I wouldn't consider them a person worthy of being your friend. That's just my old person opinion LOL It's tougher when you're younger. I get that. If you work with or go to school with a small group of people, it'll be obvious eventually. People will begin to ask what you've done to look so good. -
