Hi. Iโ€™m 1 month post op today. No major issues so far but last night and today I have a sharp pain at one of my incision sites. Itโ€™s the upper right side. I have a call into my surgeon but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Thanks

Does it feel internal or more towards the surface? It might be nerves healing.

  2. Nice thing about LB is you can buy online and return in the store if anything doesn't fit. Just keep all the tags on and the plastic baggies they ship each pair of undies in. If you go in the store you may have more selection like if they have a bin of stuff on clearance or something. Always treasures to be found at LB :P My entire adult life I've bought no where else other than this store simply because their stuff just fits perfectly, no matter how lumpy I've been LOLOL Their bras too. OMG if they ever go out of business before I die, I'll never wear another bra again :D

  3. Lane Bryant has a fantastic selection of Cacique undies, especially if you catch a 5 for $35 sale. I believe their smallest size is 14/16, but depending on the cut/style, true fit can vary. I have some 14/16 hipster style briefs and they are pretty small and don't hold everything in like I want. My favorite of theirs are any of the full-brief with a thick waist elastic. Their undies literally last forever and if you can get lucky enough to find any silky stretchy fabric briefs, those let your clothes slide on easily while keeping all the extra stuff well tucked in. Love them!

  4. In the Keto world where I come from, just like here, folks are plagued with the dreaded "stalls" then like magic, the scales begin to move again in the desired direction. I'm surprised I've never heard the topic of the "whoosh effect" discussed in here. For the sake of not writing a novel, I'll provide infographics and some helpful links to read for those interested. I'm not here to argue about the validity of this concept so please, if you don't agree, feel free to leave adult-worthy, constructive feedback or just scroll on by. I personally have experienced several "whooshes" over the course of the past year and half, so if anything, this stuff makes sense.

    What's a Whoosh?

Have you stalled for 2-3 weeks or even gained a few extra pounds, then wake up the next morning to see the number on the scale drop considerably? The "whoosh effect" is essentially the period of time during a "diet" when fat loss becomes noticeable and the graphic below shows why.

Google has a ton of references on this. This link explains things on an easy to understand, high level https://mysugarfreejourney.com/keto-questions-what-is-the-whoosh-effect/

Also, this lovely lady does an excellent job at explaining the "whoosh effect" in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF3rmi4DJAw

P.S. Just ignore the keto aspect of things. Fat loss happens the same way for everyone no matter how you're losing it...unless you get Lipo and that's a whole 'nother thing LOL

My facility tells you to open Prilosec(omeprazole) pour them on your foods, especially applesauce, hate that. Its like swallowing finely ground kitty litter! Used to like applesauce until this messing around Too, Thanks Folks!

Well that sounds pretty awful! What a way to ruin a perfectly tasty snack LOL

I did read somewhere else on here that some people do take broken open Prilosec caps or compounded Prilosec post-op. Maybe that could also be an option? I just know the caps themselves are delayed release and useless. I actually just sent my surgeon a message seeing if adding broken open Prilosec caps will help heal the ulcer faster.

I totally get you on the heartburn. Was never an issue until about a year or two ago. And it was basically every day and not related to ANY food at all. It sucked. I used to take Adderall (and then Vyvanse), too... so maybe it's somehow related??? On the brightside, after surgery, you shouldn't have acid refluc or heartburn any more. I don't have any at all! Once the ulcer heals up, it'll be awesome.

Wowwww, weird coincidence! My daughter takes Vyvanse. Ya know, I bet there is something to that. I took the immediate release Adderall tablets. It was like a firey pit of hell in my guts about 30min after taking it so I'd usually take a Zantac along with it to avoid the burn. I long for a day without this BS. Sure hope you get rid of that ulcer! Thanks for being so sweet :)

If you want to be totally bored out of your mind, there's a TON of NIH studies explaining how gastric bypass "resets" your metabolism to match your new weight. Here's a boring, technical article that explains why this is only applicable for bypass patients: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5158101/ and here is a layman's terms article: http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/diabetes/art4005.html There was a really good article about it I found pre-op... but I can't seem to find it anymore.

I LOVE reading NIH and PubMed studies! LOLOL Your 2nd link is the one I pasted earlier :P Thanks for the other one though. Reading time!

But for what it's worth, I liked Nexium better than Prilosec, but my insurance stopped covering Nexium for whatever stupid reason. But, like I said, I didn't have an ulcer beforehand and it still happened. I don't think taking anything pre-op will stop it from happening if you're going to end up getting one. It's not that common, though. Like up to 16% of patients get one. If you think you already have one, they will probably do an endoscopy beforehand to check and wait until it is healed to do the surgery; I don't know. I feel like you would KNOW if you had one, though. Mine is VERY VERY obviously there.

Thanks so much for that info! Yeah I'm not sure why I always have heartburn. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific food, it's just always there, usually in the morning. There's no pain, just a constant uncomfortable burning sensation that's remedied within a few minutes of taking Zantac or Tagamet. For many many years I took Adderall for ADHD and stopped it back in January of this year. It made the heartburn worse. I also take Advil liqui-gels almost every day because I wake up with headaches...surely that doesn't help, but I have to take something.

I feel for you guys though. The first time I read of those marginal ulcers, amongst others, it started worrying me. As often as I read about it in here, it seems way more common that 16%, but that could just be my narrow perspective. I was just hoping I could stave off ulcers by starting a PPI since it seems like I do have some sort of excessive stomach acid issue. Just need my doctor's appointment to hurry up and get here. I have so many stinkin' questions for him.

Thanks for sharing that and yes it didn't go into a lot of detail but it's true about diabetes and high blood pressure in a lot of cases, I am off of meds since surgery...It does put the diabetes in remission, I know that I will always be diabetic but with the help of my sleeve and me watching my food intake it can stay in good control...very happy about that.

Very awesome! I'm glad to hear that your health had been affected in a positive way so quickly! Metabolic and thyroid disorders are complex. The longer the damage persists, the longer it takes to heal. Hopefully with time, you'll see some positive change in your thyroid function. Keep us posted! ๐Ÿ’“

I found the official study that article was based on https://www.cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext/S2211-1247(13)00125-3

That's a great question...Me personally...do not believe that it changes after surgery or I've read on this forum that some say the surgery resets the metabolism?? My Doctor nor any one from his team never mentioned that to me...my metabolism was shot before surgery because of a thyroid condition and after surgery I am still on thyroid meds and I still lose weight slow and have to work my butt off to lose every ounce.

Don't get me wrong, I am very pleased with my weight loss results and feel that I am losing at a steady rate for me. I did not go into this surgery thinking that when I wake up from surgery a miracle was going to happen, I knew it would be a tool to help me not eat such large portions any longer and it really is doing it's part and I am doing the rest by exercising and making healthy food choices, low fat, low carb. etc...I know my body, and this is the plan that works for me.

I would love to read some statistics that states that these type of surgeries changes our metabolism because it sure did not change mine, therefore I think I should be entitled to a partial refund ๐Ÿ˜‰

    โœŒ๏ธJust my thought @Kimmie K

Right, I haven't seen this topic addressed in the forums which is why I bring it up. I'm very surprised it has not been talked about. I read A LOT...here's a website I read this morning that sparked my question. It's kind of high level and doesn't get too deep, but it talks about a change in genetic expression in bypass patients, specifically in markers of 2 genes that control glucose and fat metabolism, PGC-1 alpha and PDK4. Extremely interesting, short read that I'll be looking into deeper before I see my surgeon for the 1st time in a couple weeks. Check it out! http://www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com/content/diabetes/art4005.html

  12. I haven't had surgery yet, however, I have chronic indigestion/heartburn. This scares me after reading so many people experience ulcers after surgery. I'm almost worried I might already have one. So far, all I take are Zantac 150 or Tagamet, which as of recently has become almost a daily necessity. I know I should consult my doctor (which will be happening on 12/03), but what are ya'lls personal experiences with either Nexium or Prilosec as far as efficacy?

  13. Hiyo! I'm Kim. 38 years young, single mom of 2 in Texas. I found this forum back in 2008 when it was still LapBandTalk. Since then I've been waiting for the opportunity to have surgery covered by insurance...fast forward to 2018 and that time has finally come! I work in the software industry focusing on secure enterprise and personal mobility. Our apps and hardware are used by 100's of thousands of US military, DoD and government members. I love weird birds, the 90's, the smell of Home Depot and severe thunderstorms :797_taurus:

Pre op I used Calorie King but post op I use a written food diary so I can easily show it to my dietician. The first post op meeting with her I just described what I had been eating as I didnโ€™t track. The next meeting when I had the food diary was so so much better. She was able to give more comprehensive advice and point out good and bad things. Iโ€™m now committed to paper tracking.

You made a valid point about the paper tracking. I've used apps for so long, but I think being able to hand the doctor something tangible is probably a headache saver for everyone. I'll still use my app to calculate all my macros and whatnot. I just picked this up on Amazon https://amzn.to/2BgLSw4 Thanks for the idea!

  15. Havenโ€™t had surgery yet but Iโ€™ve used MyKeto for so long...probably about 2 years. Itโ€™s so easy to use and has an excellent food database. Easy to add your own foods and serving sizes, scan labels, etc. Tons of resources in settings. Here are a couple screenshots...donโ€™t mind the macros I havenโ€™t finished logging my food today ๐Ÿ˜‹

I thought I was going crazy or overreacting to "normal" healing pain. I am glad I harassed the crap out of then, lol. They normally don't do followups with the surgeon themselves... just the bariatric nurses. But I was like SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE. lol.

Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

That's the best thing you can do! It's your body and other folks have been chopping on it LOL If something doesn't seem OK, you certainly have the right to speak up about it ๐Ÿ’“
