  1. Day 12 for me and I am getting very nervous. I'm not that thrilled with the after surgery care they outlined for me but don't want to start over. Basically I was told that I won't see my surgeon again after the hospital stay unless there is an issue. They neglected to mention when I started all this that the follow up appts are all group or nurse visits. I am really craving a banana. (How's that for a non sequiter?)

  2. People who tell you they like to travel and then wait expectantly for you to compliment them like its a virtue. Who wouldn't like to travel if they had the money?

Also drivers who see the lane ending but apparently think their time is more valuable than everyone else's. Instead of merging like everyone else they speed up and pass everyone expecting you to let them back in at the front of the line.

Finally truckers with bumper stickers saying how much they paid in taxes without mentioning how much more money their trucks cost taxpayers with all the wear and tear on our roads.

Oh, and I have to agree with PayItForward, I think most people stand while on escalators. There really isn't room to pass someone so I only walk up if no one else is on.

  3. I have read that a few years after surgery many people regain 8-10% of their weight. Is this referring to 8-10% of what they lost after weight loss surgery (including loss calculated from the first visit since apparently that is included in the expected percentage of excess weight loss from surgery) or is referring to percentage of total excess weight or is it referring to percentage of the weight they lost down to? These statistics drive me crazy because it is never totally clear to me what they are referring to!

  4. I guess if it was too bad they would either switch to an open procedure or postpone surgery. The main reason for doing it as I understand it is to make the surgery safer so the surgeon has more room to work and see what she is doing. I would think there would be a greater chance of accidentally nicking the liver if it is in the way.

  5. My surgeon's office said to expect an average of 60% of excess weight and they said my ideal weight should be at a 25 BMI. I lost 15 pounds on my own before starting with my bariatric center. I have lost an additional 20 during the pre-diet phase my insurance required and expect to lose 10-15 with the three week liver shrinking diet. I am hoping they are just lowering expectations because I have to say I would be pretty disappointed if I only end up losing 35 - 45 pounds after surgery as that would still leave me firmly in the obese BMI range.

  6. I'm getting ready to start my liver shrinking diet. I was given instructions to eat a low carb, low fat diet with a max of 20 carbs but wasn't given a max for fat grams. How many grams were you allowed? I want to make sure I'm eating a low fat diet but know I need a little for health reasons.

  7. Some of the pros and cons depend on your medical issues. For example, diabetes and GERD/Barrett's Esophagus would often be factors leaning towards the gastric bypass while Crohn's disease or severe arthritis might be factors against. The sleeve has the advantage of usually not causing dumping and avoiding malabsorption but it can cause severe acid reflex. Current substance abuse would indicate neither surgery should be used. There are many good books on weight loss surgery so I would recommend reading a few as well as searching for old threads on this site about bypass versus sleeve. Above all ask your surgeon lots of questions such as how many of each type of surgery he/she has done and about which factors indicate gastric bypass and which factors indicate the sleeve. Good luck with your decision and welcome!
