  1. If you eat fish, how about sashimi? That was and still is my favorite way to get great Protein. A 2oz pice of sashimi grade salmon has about 22 Gms of protein. I like to go out for sushi as a lunch with friends. I order sashimi by the piece and find that 3 pieces makes a perfect meal. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  2. I do Premiere shake in my coffee. 30 Gms of Protein and about 3/4 of a cup of coffee. I count it as 16oz of Fluid on my tracker. It makes a good coffee creamer and starts my morning out right! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Started at 29 BMI

I was a bmi of 33 and had surgery on 1/5/16. SW was 212 and CW is 145. After losing 14 lbs in the 1st two weeks, I steadily lost 2 lbs a week for the 1st 6 months. I have been 1-2 lbs a week for the last 2 months. I think those of us with low bmi do better with sagging skin issues and general bounce back of skin and tissue. My end goal is 135, which I hope to hit in the next month or 2. Overall, I am absolutely thrilled with my VSG results. My only complaint is heartburn issues, but even that is getting better with time. It's been a great summer to wear a bikini, yoga pants and feel great about my body again. That says a lot for a girl who will be 47 in 2 weeks!! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  4. Hi all, I hope this day finds you well! I was sleeved on 1/5/16 and have had fantastic weight loss results. HW: 215, SW: 212, CW: 149; GW: 135. I am so pleased with my results and my new life! My only negative to date is that I developed heartburn symptoms on day 5 after surgery and they have been unrelenting since. I was placed on a PPI (generic omeprazole) by my doctor after I called complaining I could not sleep through the night due to symptoms of "dragon fire" in the middle of the night. Note: I don't usually get heartburn from eating unless I get dumb and eat something really spicy. I get heartburn due to position (horizontal) and that means most every night while trying to sleep. The end result is that I am getting acid that won't stay in my stomach if I am not upright. So...I am not a big fan of PPIs. They have been getting a lot of bad press lately due to long term side effects and the nasty reality of rebound if you try to stop taking them. They block receptors in your stomach that trigger acid production. When you stop taking them, all of the built up trigger chemicals in your blood suddenly have open receptors in your stomach and the result: dragon fire! The long term side effects that are starting to come out regarding sustained use of these products include kidney issues, early onset dementia, and immune suppression concerns. Data on these long term issues requires further study, but none of that sounds good to me. I switched to taking an H2 agonist (Zantac) instead, but found that I still could not get 8 hours of sleep without having symptoms. I was starting to get a bit desperate as this is not my idea of a great long-term situation, not to mention the likely damage to my esophagus or eventually my vocal chords. Enter the natural remedy of d-Limonene for the treatment of heartburn. I am on day 10 of a 20 day trial of this supplement. It is essentially orange oil in gel cap form. You take one gel cap every OTHER night for 20 days. The actually mechanism of action for this supplement is not well understood, but it is thought to a) coat the stomach, improve appropriate acid production and c) increase motility (movement of stuff out of the stomach and into the intestines.) After 12 days, I have actually had 2 nights in a row of full 8 hours sleep. YAY!!! That is huge for me. I would tell you that the first two days, I took the stuff 2 nights in a row. When I did that, I get a lot of gurgling in my intestines and let's just say "major motility of the system"! Not diarrhea, but loud and pointed movement of the system. Note to self: take as directed - not every day! I have been able to reduce my zantac from 300 mg at bedtime to 150 mg at bedtime only. My hope is to get off of it completely. So..That's my story. My question to the forum is: 1) who else is suffering from some pretty serious heartburn? and 2) have any of you been successful in treating your heartburn with something other than PPIs? Thanks!!
  5. I am 47 and had my sleeve on 1/5/16. My starting weight was 215 lbs and I currently weigh 151! Not bad for 6 months. This was the best thing I could have done for my health. The first month is a challenge, but it gets pretty easy after that. My recommendation at this point is to find a good Protein shake that works for you to lose weight before surgery, but recognize you may not like the same shake after. Your taste buds will change some and things you crave today will no longer taste good. Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Gastric sleeve and a leak

You are out of danger for a leak after about 2 weeks. Your doctor may do a test before you leave the hospital to check for leaks, depends on their practice. Mine didn't, but I know some that do it. Leaks are very rare, but serious. They are also fixable. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

  14. Sleeve is a great 1st procedure. You still have other secondary surgical options including doing a RNY after if you don't get the results you are going for. Bypass does not leave any other doors open. There is no revision or 2nd procedure options there. My sister did bypass 10 years ago and managed to stretch out her pouch (there is a ring or stoma that creates the pouch connection to the new intestine location.) Once you stretch the stoma ring...it won't unstretch. With sleeve, you have a pressurized staple line the length of your stomach. It won't stretch out. The fundus (stretchy part of your stomach) is all or mostly removed during your surgery, so your restriction with a sleeve is permanent. I went with sleeve because I didn't like the idea of rerouting my intestines and have seen that with deliberate bad eating, you can stretch the stoma with bypass. Just a couple more points to think about as you make your decision. Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Spicy food sensitivity

Almost 5 months out. Love(d) spicy food, but can't do it without paying the price now. If I really want it, I eat a couple of tums before my meal and that helps. I also find I can't handle raw onions anymore without horrible heartburn. That's been an adjustment as they show up in everything! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  16. I was sleeved on 1/5/16 (roughly 4 months out.) The hair loss phase got serious this week. I am losing it by the handful each day right now. I knew it would happen; I take my Vitamins and Biotin, but it is still hard to see the seriously thinning sections at the crown. I have been through this before with both my post-baby experiences and with a previous surgical experience. I know it sucks and I know it will eventually grow back. Today is just a tough day with the hair... Any thoughts? Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Calorie guidelines ?

It sounds about the same as where I was at 2 weeks. The first 4 weeks, I was around 400-600 calories a day. 2nd month, I was at 600-800 calories a day. 3rd month, I was 800-1000 calories a day and have stayed that way for the last couple of months. I'm 5 months out and lose 2-3 lbs a week pretty consistently. All that being said, I really recommend that you focus first on Protein and hydration. Low protein will sap your energy. The calories are less important than the protein (unless you are snacking on sugar!) Also, don't sweat the fat too much. Your restriction will keep that in check for now. 20. - I know the first 5 days were the hardest, but in retrospect, not really that terrible. - Get up and get moving if you want to recover faster! - Don't buy a lot of anything in advance...your taste buds will not be the same as before surgery. - the first week is all about trying to actually get some nutrition in your system. It seems like it would be easy to eat 5 bites of something, but it's a challenge! - Find a Protein shake you can stand. I still drink a Premier shake every morning as its a fast 30 Gms of protein. - focus on the protein. Not the fat, not the calories...focus on the protein! - remember to laugh at yourself the first time you put a heaping scoop of something in your plate only to realize you can eat only 4 bites of it. - be patient. It works. - take care of you - mind, body and spirit. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
