Some days my job is pretty cool

Even in our darkest time these beautiful moments remind us why it's great to be alive.

In a funk ... and need to vent

Sounds like a stressful time but you seem to have a good support system in your husband. Life will continue on, and you'll get through this. Like the saying goes: "Take a lesson from your dog: Just kick some grass over that s**t and move on."
  3. In regards to pureeing all my foods....I never did. I just masticated the living crap out of each bite before swallowing. However, I stuck to the diet (approved foods) for each stage and experimented with different foods once I hit the stage 3 diet (making sure to stay within the approved foods listed).

    Am I losing quickly enough?

It sounds like you're on the right track. As long as you are getting your 60+ grams of Protein and 64-72oz of Water per day...you're doing exactly as you should. One thing to note is making sure each meal has less than 20g of carbs with emphasis sugars being no more than 4g. I'm in stage 4 and this is what my nutritionist has set forth as far as my diet. Also, are you portioning out each meal? Making sure that you are getting 3-4 meals of no more than 6-8oz servings?

    Puréed shmureed

Like others have said the pancakes are probably not a good idea. Just because you can puree anything at this stage doesn't mean straying from high Protein and low carbs. This is the time to build the good eating habits and not satiate the carb cravings. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for failure once you get to the stage 3 & 4 diets.

    Puréed shmureed

Mashed potatoes were on my approved list during the pureed stage. Up to 1/4 cup as long as they were made without the skins.
  7. I have the app on my iPad but I prefer to use the regular website.
  8. Yesterday was a BAD day for me. Not only did I stumble and eat something a shouldn't have, I also exceeded my suggested serving size for two of my meals. This bit me in the butt as I noted a several pound gain over the last two days. What the hell is wrong with me??? Sorry, had to get that out.

    First day home

It's all about finding the distraction that works for you. Reading, blogging, crafts, etc. Another thing to remember is get your walking in. Whether it be a couple laps around the house or a short walk in the neighborhood.
  10. The first thing to think when feeling tired all the time is Protein. Are you getting in ALL your protein? Next thing is are you getting in all your Iron and supplements? These are big things that can cause fatigue and important to stay on top of.

Firefighters (or any public safety) thread

6 weeks should be plenty. Everyone heals different just don't rush your body. If you don't feel like you can perform your duties then don't rush to get back

Fell off the wagon - hard!

You're human and you know where you got off track. Get back on course like you did before and resume the success.

    Insurance Approval

From the time I went to the first informational meeting to surgery was 6 mos. This included a 13wk workout program, 4 meetings with a dietician, a psych eval, EKG, and EGD. The approval only took a couple days once I completed all requirements.
  14. Simple: keep the info circle small. Tell your close family or friends. The rest of your coworkers will likely notice your weight loss, but you cannot control how they will react. It has been pointed out that some people had a good experience with telling everyone they know. However, if you scan this forum you will find MANY stories of people who have been met with arguments, hurt feelings, and non-support or disagreement with their decisions. You know you best. What you don't know is other people and how they will TRULY act until the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Once it's out you can't take it back. Are you willing to deal with people who may disagree with your choice and possibly try to make you feel bad or wrong for your decision? It's not a guarantee, but neither is all roses and only support. I told my spouse and a couple of close friends. Co-workers have noticed my weight loss and when asked I tell them I'm on a very restrictive diet and regular exercise. I don't know all my co-workers well nor do I care to hear if they agree with my decision. My family is supportive and those are the opinions I listen to. Most importantly....my decision was right for me.
  15. Are you exercising yet/at all? If not start incorporating at least a walking routine.

"Think You're Too Heavy to Exercise?" -- articles

I agree. I can attest that working out when you become a certain weight is a struggle. Even going to the gym has limitations as much of the equipment is not meant for obese people, or comfortable to use. Knowledge is power. Putting out as many options as possible is definitely a great resource!

"Think You're Too Heavy to Exercise?" -- articles

There are several series on YouTube with bariatric/obesity specific workouts. One such series is the Workout Launchpad on the LIVEexercise channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPJKAG0mknI

    Massachusetts/3 days post-op

Are you using the no surgar added Carnation Instant Breakfast? If not you're body isn't likely taking well to the "excessive" carbs. Other options include low car Protein drinks or concentrated protein like NewWhey. This is what I was on for wk1 post op. Also, are you sipping your liquids taking in no more than 1 oz/ 15 mins/

    Band to Bypass Approved!

Try to remember back to when you started losing weight after your initial banding. Many of these principles carry over to RNY. One big issue you'll need to keep in mind is malabsorption. Proper Vitamin supplementation is important. I use Optisource as it's a bariatric specific vitamin, and a true Multivitamin (no need to take separate B12, Thiamin, etc). Another thing to keep in mind is how much more sensitive your body will be to carbs. If you have a sweet tooth...get it under control ahead of time. lol
  20. Excellent news! Like others have alluded to...share the information sparingly. My advice is keep the circle of information small.
  21. Start measuring and recording your intake. Either use an app like myFitnessPal or a journal. Establish your baseline then you will know your starting point. Also, like someone else mentioned, calorie creep is more of an issue than many of us realize.

Not sure who I should tell!

I only told a couple of close work friends. The rest that noticed I was losing weight have asked the usual "How are you doing it?" My standard reply is "Among other things, a very restrictive diet." Stick to your guns. It's your decision and no one is entitled to know. Keep the info circle small.

    Bypass vs Sleeve

My surgery date was 3 1/2 mos ago. Down almost 70 lbs. Definitely glad I decided on the RNY.

    Bypass vs Sleeve

Without knowing your other measurements (height, BMI, etc) it's hard to gauge. What comorbidities do you have? Any GERD? If you have GERD then gastric bypass is the way to go. I had this discussion with my surgeon and discussed why I was getting WLS as well as my previous attempts a weight loss. His recommendation was bypass (you'll also see it called RNY here). Especially if you have comorbidities. Plus, no anatomy is physically removed from your body.
  25. Mashed potatoes are fine as long as they are made WITHOUT the skin.
