Yes, I have had many people say "why are you having WLS you are not that big ",too. Could not have waited until I was "that big" because if I had I would have been dead!I have prediabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain, high cholestoral, borderline high blood pressure, etc. this is not vanity it is insurance that I will be alive to see my kids graduate from college and see my grandchildren. Many in my family were not so lucky. That said, some will never understand so I would think before telling people who don't really need to know.

I also have a lower bmi and have 4 or 5 people who have had the surgery whom I work with. They are the worst critics. They should know why I need it and that it has more to do with just your weight. I wonder just how much research they did before getting the surgery themselves.

Some folks just don't get it. That's exactly why I didn't tell no more than 5 people. Those 5 people understand I was borderline diabetic- cholesterol - HBP, had sleep apnea, back & joint pain. So they knew I needed the sleeve to get & stay healthy. I didn't want to hear or deal with the folks telling me I didn't need it because I went "big" enough to need WLS. It's been almost a year & 1/2 post op and it still haven't told anyone else. Me limiting folks that I told has made this journey a good & positive experience.

I'm sorry. Actually 35 BMI is the cutoff limit, so you met standard limits, I can't see why people are upset unless they think you have to be 300 to have the surgery. The fact is, the smaller you are at surgery the better and easier surgery will be on you. I lost between 30-40 pounds before I had surgery, with a year long diet and exercise program. It didn't help with my medical conditions, so I was still above 40 when I had it.

BabyNewYear reacted to Stevehud in New Study Says People with WLS are generally....
Okay so Im watching the news yesterday while at the gym, Well reading the captions anyway. And it comes up that a new study shows that people who are successful with weight loss surgery, aside from having health concerns lessened etc, also have a much lowr rate of depression and are much happier with a better outlook on life.
    Well DUH!!!
I mean seriously someone actually studied this!, So let me get this straight, if i lose weight, can be active, dont have all the pains and hospitalizations etc, ill be happier? Holy Cow! Who would have thought that would be the case?
On a serious note, though it is good to see that maybe things will start to sway in the direction of doing what we all know, and that is WLS is not something to be shunned or kept outside of the norm, but that it can be embraced as a meaningful way for people to take charge of their life and gain the life we desperately need and want.
We have all earned the right to be Happy, Now we have the Proof!

Nutritional yeast is a godsend. It makes salad taste like bread. Sprinkle it on like Parmesan cheese and enjoy the hit of Iron and Protein. Any health food store will have it in bulk foods. It is raised commonly on molasses, which is high in iron, but the little buggers digest some of this iron which makes it easier for people to digest. Also it has thiamine, necessary for preventing cognitive impairment, especially in RNY patients. Did I mention it makes everything taste like bread?

my comfort food : Tonight I took a head of cauliflower, boiled it until slightly stiff, then drained it, placed it on a baking sheet, spread greek yogurt mixed with crushed garlic over the entire head, graded some parm. cheese to finish it, then into the oven@ 450 for 20min. Wow! it was delicious! When eating it, I sprinkled hot sauce--just a few drops on . Full of flavor.

I was out of it from the anesthesia at first but tried to get up and walking asap. Felt like I had been punched in the stomach; sore but not terrible. Did not vomit at all! This was my big fear. Yay!! Lots of gas to get rid of but the more I moved the faster it seemed to dissipate.
In week two now and feeling good, almost too good, because I want to eat different foods. Finding it challenging to stick to the liquid diet already. Gotta stick to the plan! Hard to stay regular and the Colace plus exercise doesn't seem to help too much. I miss my morning java My BM's are like those first post-baby BM's, girls, yeck !
All in all this surgery wasn't too bad. I just hope I can keep up with the weight loss.

I probably shouldn't post on this thread, because I haven't seen the TV show.
But I gotta say ... I love the way I look post-op at 137 pounds (5'5" tall) and 70 years old without any plastic surgery.
Yes, I have crepe-y thighs. And my boobs are halfway between where they used to be and my waist, and my arms aren't made for primetime sleeveless dresses.
But I look SO MUCH BETTER than I used to look when I was a big fat mess. I look really, really cute in clothes. And my hubby adores me at any size / shape.
I'm just so happy I have a hard time being unhappy about some extra skin.
(Not saying everybody isn't entitled to feel how they feel. Just wanted to express my own feelings on this subject.)

There are so many factors that feed into whether you will have loose skin and how much. Age, genetics, ethnicity, rate of loss.... There are a few things you can do that *might* help *some*, but there are no guarantees. Make sure you drink all your Water, moisturize daily, make sure you take your Vitamins (C & E especially), and do some toning/strength training. All of those things can potentially help, but the truth is, if you lose 100 pounds or more in a year or less, you are going to have excess skin. There is no way around it. But remember, excess skin won't kill you, excess weight literally will.

I was sore and had a lot of pressure in my chest from the gas. The pressure would build up and I would walk around the hallways until I felt tired. Then I would sleep, wake up to more pressure and repeat.

Where's the Water? Hunger and thirst are often confused. A half hour or hour after eating you should be drinking a low cal or no cal beverage versus eating.
