  1. Yeah, its another way of saying whats your problem or do you have a problem.
  2. I am liking the whole "riddle me this" line. I will have to use it along with What's your boggle (from the movie Demolition Man)
  3. Patti In case you didn't know, white is a color so stop being offended and bring something positive. If not stop posting. Besides there are some weight loss issues that are specific to African American females, as I have stated before, and it would be nice to talk to someone who was going through it who will understand. Isn't that the purpose of the sub forums?
  4. Thanks guys. This helps alot. I can't get all down because I just get full and I am having a hard time even distinquishing hunger because I am sipping liquids all day, but I guess that's the point during the first week. I still have some discomfort also but I attribute that to the surprise hernia that had to be repaired also (although I was warned it was common to find these when they open you up, I was still surprised the I had one). I have lost 6 pounds in 5 days so I am pretty happy about that. On with the healing then.
  5. I am trying to get all of my protein in, however, I am only 4 days post op and I am having a hard time getting all of that liquid down. Any suggestions?
  6. I have not read the issue of Essence, however, I am happy for Monique and her weight loss. People think it is easier for people with money to lose weight and keep it off, however, I think it is harder. I mean, I think I would be gigantic if I could afford to eat where ever and when ever I want. If I want Italian food, I can just fly to Italy. I think that's part of the deal with Oprah. Not only can she get any food she wants, but extremely good food. Imagine what size some of us would be if that's what we could do. As far as tellling people, I told everyone. I also let them know that I have been dealing with my weight all of my life and if it were as easy as some of them say, then why do people have weight problems. Telling people gives me the feeling of accountability. Accountability because I know that they are watching but I also know that many many black women are looking because they want something that will work for them also, they just don't want to be the first one to try. I will be the first then. WE ARE DYING FOR A PIECE OF PIE OR CHICKEN!!! I have to be the one in my family to stop this or I doom my daughters to a lifetime of health issues. And I always tell my daughters, don't be typical, stereotypical or statistical. And when it comes to weight, being overweight and black is just that. I also tell them not to be that angry black female too, but that is a different lecture
  7. It's done!! I am officially apart of the band. The procedure only took like an hour, and that was because I had a paraesophageal hernia he had to repair first (who knew!) But anyway, little pain at incision site and still trying to work the gas out but other than that, I am fine
  8. I am going to be banded tomorrow at Trinity (formerly Montclair) with Dr. Touliatos.
  9. Husband does not like music when we are doing the do, unfortunate, because I love music. My favorite for getting in the mood was Moments in Love by Art of Noise. Good for slow kissing and all. For the actual act...Wishing Well by Terrance Trent D'Arby. Has the "right" beat for the hot moments.
  10. Tomorrow is the big day for me. I am a little scared and more than just a little nervous. I am letting all of my past failures cloud my mind. While I was on cruise in the Bahamas this weekend, all I could think about was one day soon I am going to be able to wear a swim suit without that stupid little skirt on it. However, now that the surgery is tomorrow, I am thinking about the time spent on Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, LA Weight Loss, Physicians Weight Loss, Dick Gregory's Bohemian Diet (my first diet), and the many, many times I have been on diet pills. I am thinking about my friend that had the surgery 3 years ago and has not lost a pound. I am thinking what makes me think I can do it when she didn't. I am praying for strength and guidance as I try once again to lose weight. I know its the devil trying to discourage me. I slept most of the day so I wouldn't have to suffer on this liquid pre surgery diet, however, I am awake, and the kids are home and my hubby bought Chinese food for the family. I got Egg Drop Soup (strained of course), and everyone else got well..I won't continue. Anyway, this is just nervous energy. Anyway, tomorrow is the big day. I am nervous and hungry.
  11. Because of our food preparation and food choices (especially in the South, we like real butter, and as Paula Deen says, "country cooking makes you good looking") we tend to lose less weight with ANY weight loss program or surgery than our counterparts. However, I have seen many many AA women who have lost to their goal so I am inspired. I have heard this statistic from more than one surgeon. My surgeon wanted me to have GB just so I would reach my goal. I refused and he accepted my decision.
  12. When I went to my counsultation, there was a lady there that had had GB surgery about 5 years ago and she was saying how she had gained about 20 pounds back and how terrified she was of gaining it all back. However, she said that they have found that people do gain it back and there is some procedure that they can do to kinda "upgrade" the GB. She had it done by my surgeon (she was from Atlanta) and had lost about 15 of the 20 she had gained and was still on the decrease (she was about 2 weeks postop). But geez, it requried another surgery to fix it. I think they should let people know that you will gain the weight back because I have a friend that eats everything she wants--granted that it is still less than what she used to eat, cause sister could hide some groceries, however, it is still more than your average person. She has not lost all the weight she wanted to lose with GB-she wanted to lose around 150 and she has lost about 95-- and she has kinda stalled. I could so see her gaining her weight back.
  13. I am getting banded on Thursday, October 9th and I am nervous, ready, but nervous because of all the studies about African American Women, but hey, I have proven folks wrong before so...I am ready.
  14. The Wal-Mart in Trussville. My surgery is October 9th. I go on my cruise Oct 2nd. It's going pretty good. I am getting excited.
  15. Okay, I am shopping in Wal-Mart yesterday and this little old white lady walked up to me smiling. I smiled back and tried to go passed her. She then stopped me and said "you look like you are a good cook, can you tell me how to make cabbage rolls". I laughed at her, informed her that although I am fat, I can't cook at all and walked off. However, it hurt my feelings. I mean, I aint that big. I had to gain weight to get the lap band approval. But dang, that hurt. :girl_hug:
  16. I thought about getting sisterlocks for awhile but the upkeep is too expensive. I lost a ton of hair when I was pregnant (think George Jefferson) and had to rock a wig when I came back from maternity leave. Because of how horrible I felt bald it was one of the reasons I decided against gastric. I also decided to go natural and go with twist instead of sister locks, all in hopes of getting my hair back to its healthy natural state and not losing so much of it after surgery. I will keep my fingers clasped (as in prayer).
  17. Okay, I originally started this about a week ago because I finally got a date. My Cardiologist was faxing my clearance to the wrong fax number so once we got that taken care of they gave me a date of September 16th, which is like 2 weeks away. I was all excited until I remember I go on cruise 2 weeks after that. I cannot be on mushies on a cruise boat!!! Anyway, I called an explained everything and now I have a date for October 9th. A couple of days after we return from the cruise (going to the Bahamas and getting banded baby!!). Anyway, October is going to be an exciting month! I can't wait.
  18. All of you guys are off!! The real babe is Idris Elba and its no secret that I have a crush. That British accent does it for me and in many forums he's known as the panty wetter.
  19. Okay, I was told today that my Cardiologist just faxed my report so that I can be cleared for surgery (finally). However, the wait has given me time to think and get nervous and look around. My question is, if you had to do it all over again, honestly, would you still choose lap banding or would you go for the gastric bypass?? Just wondering from a comment someone made from another post.:confused2:
  20. I have not gotten a date because they wouldn't give me one until the cardiologist approves me. While I was pregnant I had irregular heatbeats due to dehydration. However, when I called the cardiologist she wouldn't approve me because it's been over a year. I have an appointment next week so hopefully a schedule date will be coming soon.
  21. My surgeons office called and I got approved from the insurance (it only took 1 week). I have just got to get them a letter from my cardiologist to say I am clear and I can schedule my surgery. I went to the cardiologist because I was having irregular heartbeats during pregnancy. They said it was dehydration so there should not be a problem. YIPEEEEEE!!! I am on my way:thumbup:
  22. Okay, For those of you who have lost big pounds already, what is a typical day of eating like. I have not been banded so I have a hard time visualizing that little cup of food the nutritionist said would be enough to fill me up. What are you guys doing? Some people are doing low carb, some just cutting back. Can some of you guys give us newbies tips on what you eat. Thanks.:biggrin2:
  23. My name is Sandy I am: Living is Birmingham, AL Married for 7 years 3 Kids-Mallery, Meredith and Miles Logan Registered Nurse Just finished my 6 months doctor supervised, had paperwork sent today and waiting for approval :biggrin2: I have soooo struggled with weight all of my life which was compounded by the fact that my mother and the whole side of her family is small. My dad's side of the family is the large side. I will never be little, but I can be smaller and I love this group.
  24. Hey Yall, I am also in Birmingham for the girls that are here. I rarely post though, but I am so glad that there is a place for the WOC to come and talk. When I first started trying to find information, I really didn't see a place to come and talk about what is going on with me as a WOC. I have not been approved for lap band yet (I use Touliatos at Trinity--formerly Medical Center East) and they have been great. Outside of the loooong wait during your appointment, the lady that handles the insurance stuff has been good. Yesterday she called my cell phone to let me know that she will be sending my stuff to insurance today. My biggest concern is whether or not I am going to be hungry. I know it sounds simple, however, I have been dieting for most of my life (I started at 13 with Dick Gregory's Bohemian diet-awful stuff) and I know that if I am starving I am going to be miserable. A little hunger I can handle, but when I was on Weight Watchers I'd be like ok, it's 12:00 in the afternoon, I am starving and I have 5 points left. Anyway, hopefully this will not be the case. The other thing I is that I am glad there are other Southern women here. My husband, who likes a big woman but is coming around, says that WLS does not work for Southern women because we are such good cooks and because we love to eat good food (true) but I will have to come to terms with eating, as he says, like a Northerner. Anyway, just venting a little. By the way, my surgeon tried to convince me to have gastric, not because of size, because I am borderline, but because he says studies show AA women do worst with any WLS so to get me where I want to be with the weight loss, gastric would be the best option. I would lose about what other ethic groups would lose with LB. He was not being mean, just straight statistics-he lacks that warm and fuzzy personality. Which is another reason I am glad this group exsist, for support. Thanks guys and drop me a line whenever you feel like.
  25. You guys are so brave. Tann you are an inspiration to us all. I believe that my fear of failure is what is keeping me from getting started. So far I have been a fat person all of my life and everything has failed. My friend had it done and she has not done well so it is just another excuse. However, seeing you guys success I am encouraged to talked to my doctor tomorrow. She has already said that she would do whatever it took to make sure that I get the surgery as long as I did the 6 months of diet. I have several friends that have had gastric bypass and I really don't to do that. You guys have given me reason to hope, which I had given up on. I can do this--I mean I just tried a diet plan which was completely unhealthy but I was desperate. I will let you guys know what my MD says.
