  1. Okay, For those of you who have lost big pounds already, what is a typical day of eating like. I have not been banded so I have a hard time visualizing that little cup of food the nutritionist said would be enough to fill me up. What are you guys doing? Some people are doing low carb, some just cutting back. Can some of you guys give us newbies tips on what you eat. Thanks.:biggrin2:

    Where Are My G.R.I.T.S

Hey Yall, I am also in Birmingham for the girls that are here. I rarely post though, but I am so glad that there is a place for the WOC to come and talk. When I first started trying to find information, I really didn't see a place to come and talk about what is going on with me as a WOC. I have not been approved for lap band yet (I use Touliatos at Trinity--formerly Medical Center East) and they have been great. Outside of the loooong wait during your appointment, the lady that handles the insurance stuff has been good. Yesterday she called my cell phone to let me know that she will be sending my stuff to insurance today. My biggest concern is whether or not I am going to be hungry. I know it sounds simple, however, I have been dieting for most of my life (I started at 13 with Dick Gregory's Bohemian diet-awful stuff) and I know that if I am starving I am going to be miserable. A little hunger I can handle, but when I was on Weight Watchers I'd be like ok, it's 12:00 in the afternoon, I am starving and I have 5 points left. Anyway, hopefully this will not be the case. The other thing I is that I am glad there are other Southern women here. My husband, who likes a big woman but is coming around, says that WLS does not work for Southern women because we are such good cooks and because we love to eat good food (true) but I will have to come to terms with eating, as he says, like a Northerner. Anyway, just venting a little. By the way, my surgeon tried to convince me to have gastric, not because of size, because I am borderline, but because he says studies show AA women do worst with any WLS so to get me where I want to be with the weight loss, gastric would be the best option. I would lose about what other ethic groups would lose with LB. He was not being mean, just straight statistics-he lacks that warm and fuzzy personality. Which is another reason I am glad this group exsist, for support. Thanks guys and drop me a line whenever you feel like.

    African American Bandsters?

You guys are so brave. Tann you are an inspiration to us all. I believe that my fear of failure is what is keeping me from getting started. So far I have been a fat person all of my life and everything has failed. My friend had it done and she has not done well so it is just another excuse. However, seeing you guys success I am encouraged to talked to my doctor tomorrow. She has already said that she would do whatever it took to make sure that I get the surgery as long as I did the 6 months of diet. I have several friends that have had gastric bypass and I really don't to do that. You guys have given me reason to hope, which I had given up on. I can do this--I mean I just tried a diet plan which was completely unhealthy but I was desperate. I will let you guys know what my MD says.
  5. I have struggled with my weight all my life like many here and I was estatic to learn about lap banding. One of my friends got banded about 2 years ago and I have been kinda holding out waiting on her success. Unfortunately, that success never came and she is bigger than before. I decided to go it on my own. However, at the seminar, the doctor said that Lap Banding did not work as well for African American women and they don't understand why (he also said that African American women lost less weight with Gastric Bypass also). Long story to say, are there any African American success stories out there because this has really been discouraging for me and I prefer to not have gastric bypass in order to just lose what others can lose with lap banding. :help:

    African American Bandsters?

I just started a thread about this because I didn't see this before. When I went to the seminar about Lap Banding the doctor stated that aa lost less weight than their white counterparts with any form of weight loss method used (including gastric bypass). I was asking for success stories in the other thread and I am still open to them. My friend got banding 2 years ago and has not seen any results. I am soooooo sick of this fight since I have been battling since childhood and I was really hoping this would offer some real assistance.:help:
