    Low BMI is it possible

I had a BMI of 29 and was sleeved in January. I'm from Canada but had to go to Mexico cuz no doctor in Canada would do it. My weight loss has been pretty slow, down just over 20 lbs in two months, but I'm okay with that. I don't regret the surgery one bit. I was very active before and struggled to lose the weight, and the few times I was successful I just gained the weight plus more back within a few months. I was a binger and although I still have cravings sometimes, I can only eat a small amount. In the past everyone always told me dieting so strictly was bad for me and that's why I binged. I always knew I just had to learn to eat treats in moderation, but without the sleeve it just wasn't possible. Now it it finally is!

    Low BMI VSG topics?

Hi everyone, I'm finally back for an update! I had been in the typical stall for quite some time, so was hesitant to post too much and come across pessimistic. Here's a recap. Had my surgery January 9th in Mexico. BMI was 29, weighed in at 153.4 (only 5'1) on January 1st when I started my pre-op. I had an easy pre-op, basically just did Protein shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then veggies and chicken for dinner. Three days before surgery was yogurt only diet, but I did add a Protein shake once a day just to keep my protein up and my carbs down. Day of surgery I weighed 148.4 lbs, which put my BMI at 28. I went down to Mexico on the day of surgery and spent a few days in San Diego afterwards. First time I weighed myself on my home scale I was 139.2 and that was on January 17th. Jan 18 - 137.2 Jan 19 - 137.0 Then my weight started to bounce around and stall out so I stopped weighing daily. Feb 1 - 137.6. I started working out Feb 1, scale was still moving super slow, so again just weighed every once in a while Feb 5 - 136.0 Feb 23 - 135.2 Then I went on vacation to California. Just got back last night and I weighed in this morning at .... 129.0!!!!!! That puts me at a BMI of 24.4, the high end of NORMAL WEIGHT. Why did I finally drop? I don't exactly know, but here's two things that probably helped. 1. I ate out a lot, and although I didn't eat lots at a time, my calories were definitely higher, so I think that actually helped boost my metabolism. 2. I got super sick the second last night, stuck in the bathroom (sorry if this is TMI - but basically all night pooping and puking --- although it was mostly dry heaving since there was no food in me). So I probably am down quite a bit of Water weight, and fully expect I may gain a couple pounds once I get hydrated again and eating somewhat normal. Anyways, I just wanted to post an update since it's been a while, and I feel like I may have finally broken this stall. I am less than 6 lbs above my lowest weight as an adult. Still 14 lbs above my goal weight, but that being said, I am looking forward to increasing my exercise and putting on muscle, so realize it may be difficult for the scale to drop steadily if I'm toning up. Hope everyone else is doing well! --I am going to copy and paste this post to a few of the other "low BMI" threads, so sorry for the repeat to those of you that follow those threads as well--

    Surgery on a "smaller" patient

I'm a "smaller" patient too. Surgery 1/9/16. Lost 16 lbs within the first 10 days. Have only lost 1 lb in the last month. Frustrating, but since I have mostly kept this surgery to myself (only my husband and parents know), it's nice that no one has questioned it. I would like to lose another 20 lbs, hoping once the scale starts moving again, I can average about 5-8 lbs/month and then by summer I'll be at or very near goal! I know it's frustrating, but know you're not alone.
  9. Hi there, I had my sleeve done in Mexico. It did not include any nutritional follow up. Because my BMI was low, I did not qualify in Canada. I am looking for a nutritionist or dietitian that works with weight loss surgery patients. I cannot seem to find one in my city, so wondering if anyone in Canada has a NUT they can recommend that would perform appointments over the phone or online/Skype? Thanks!

    Telling people

I told my parents and husband. My parents were completely against it but my dad has since told me that although he doesn't agree with it he's proud of me. I originally heard about the surgery and Mexico option from a lady at work. We had even discussed going together. She went in September but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Needed more time to research and really wanted to give regular diet and exercise one last sincere try. Since September she has done amazing and is down 85. In November I told her I was planning to go and she was so unsupportive and told me it would be the biggest mistake of my life... Although I'm not quite a month out, so far I have no regrets. Needless to say I lied and told her I decided against it. Wait I'm not sure I understand... The friend who told you about the surgery and lost 85lbs is the same friend who was unsupportive of your decision? How so? Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk Haha, exactly my point. She was all encouraging when she thought we were going to go together. Now that she's lost tons and is feeling super confident all of a sudden doesn't want others to be as successful it seems. I just mention it because I thought of all people she would be understanding and supportive. Funny how some of the people you expect to be there for you are the ones that are the opposite.

  12. I was down 5 lbs. Started Jan 1 just eating healthier but still not perfect. Then Jan 6, for three days prior to surgery, I was on a yogurt only diet, but still had one premier protein shake each day. So excited your day is getting closer! What day is surgery? How extreme is your pre op diet?
  13. I had my surgery Jan 9 and have "only" lost 12 lbs since surgery. 11 of them were by Jan 20. Today I was down another pound. On Jan 21 the scale actually started creeping up slowly so I put the scale away. I plan to weigh once a week now. And if on my weigh in day I'm feeling bloated or not great, I'll skip my weigh in. Not worth the frustration! Although stalls are completely normal, maybe post what you're eating and some of the vets around here may have some advice or ideas for you! I had to give up Mio. Although I was getting more than the required water in with it, I was getting bloated off the stuff. Not that it has helped break the stall on the scale, I feel much better.
  14. Had a BMI of 29 when I started. Started just eating healthy Jan 1, then Jan 6 for three days pre-op I was only allowed yogurt. Lost 5 lbs between Jan 1 and my surgery date, Jan 9. Post op I lost 11 lbs in the first 11 days. Haven't lost anything since. I'm getting in my protein and just barely getting in my water. Started exercising again this week, but since I've started I am struggling to keep my eyes open during the day. Feeling good otherwise. I expected to stall, just hoping now that I've added exercise and I'm slowly starting to be able to eat more, the scale will start moving again. I've started only weighing once a week as to not get too frustrated!
  15. Hi everyone! I had surgery Jan 9th. I was down 16lbs in the first ten days. Over the last 3 days I've gained 2.4 lbs. No, I'm not freaking out, I get it's normal and I'm just happy I'm still down over ten, but thought I'd post what I'm eating to see if anyone has any suggestions just so I don't continue on this path if I'm clearly doing something wrong. Since I started "thick liquids" the last few days (which is when the scale started creeping up) I had a premier Protein shake for Breakfast and a second for lunch (30 G protein each) and then butternut squash Soup with a bit of plain protein mixed in. Last night I had sugar free pudding with unflavored Protein powder mixed in instead of the soup thinking I should maybe watch my carb intake a bit more since the soup was higher carbs. I don't seem to have any restriction when it comes to drinking the shakes. I basically just sip on them throughout the morning or afternoon (this is usually what I did prior to surgery too). The soup/pudding - don't really have a problem with those either, although I eat slowly and stop when I think I'm about full. I do know I need to increase my Water, only getting about 48 oz a day (and most is with mio mixed in). And I do need to increase my exercise too. I am taking multi Vitamins, Calcium, Iron and b12. Any thought? I'm guessing this is pretty normal, but wanted to check. I have another week of "thick liquids" then I can move on to small "soft" chunks of meat, etc. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!
  16. I have been feeling very bloated ever since I started on thick liquids. Gonna try cutting out the mio and just drink plain water. Also gonna try more soups and adding protein to increase my calories as opposed to drinking two premier protein shakes a day. Will have one for breakfast and then do soups for lunch and dinner, and try and fit in a Greek yogurt or 1/2 cup of pudding which I've also added protein to either before or after dinner. My calories have been around 500, protein 60+. Thinking if I increase my calories more the scale might start moving. Haven't weighed myself since last Thursday but I don't feel like I've lost anything and my clothes aren't any looser. Was planning to wait until end of the month before I step on the scale. Is it too much if I can already get in 700 or 800 calories at two and a half weeks out???
  17. mrs w

    is this normal

This sounds just like me! How has the last few weeks been going? Did you notice restriction once you started on purees and/or solids?
  18. Hi everyone, I'm moving on to the thick liquid and purée stage. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for low carb options. I've been having a Premier Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch which are low carb, but the Soups I've purchased are all really high carbs. I liked the idea of Soup because it feels like a "normal meal", not just a snack like yogurt, pudding, etc. I realize I'm eating super low calories so carbs shouldn't necessarily be a huge concern but I know in the past I've been successful at losing the weight when I'm in ketosis, so would like to keep my carbs low for the next few weeks. Hoping it helps prevent me plateauing too early. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

    BMI 31-32

Had surgery Jan 9th. Down 16 lbs already (only lost 4 during pre op diet). I go back to work tomorrow. Still weak and incision site is still sore, but feeling pretty good. Been on clear liquids up until now. Tomorrow I can start thicker protein shakes and cream soups, etc. I know the weight loss will slow right down once I start adding in some of those things, but I'm okay with that. My goal is to lose another 7 pounds between now and end of February. Although I would love for it to be closer to 12, I know I need to be realistic. Sounds like most people stall once they get to the purée stage, and that stall can last for a number of weeks.
  20. Hi there, I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, but some of the threads are a few years old. I just had my sleeve done on Saturday, and next Thursday I start my Vitamins. My coordinator and the surgeon suggested I purchase Usana. I know they definitely get a sort of kick back from the company, which I'm not totally against, I just want to see if there's equivalent alternatives out there that I could get for cheaper. Of course I realize that the vitamins are definitely important and I don't want to skimp out just to save money. 1. From Usana they suggest: Essentials - 3 times a day Biomega - 2 times a day 2. They also have underneath this recommendation that I could purchase as an alternative: Biotin Chewable - 2 per day Mega Red - 1 per day. (when I google the two options though I don't really see how they would be substituted for one another.) Any suggestions or recommendations?? Thanks so much in advance.
  21. Had my sleeve done on Jan 9th. I know it's only 3 days out but just looking for a little support. The first two nights I spent at the hospital. Each morning I woke up feeling great. I believe this had a lot to do with me being on an IV and staying hydrated. On the first day I felt good till about noon and had a roller coaster rest of the day. Felt good then terrible then great then awful. Yesterday I woke up again feeling great. Did the leak test and drank apple juice. Got the drain out and was released to the hotel. By about 5:00 pm I started feeling shakes. I couldn't stomach the broth. Tasted way too salty although my mom tasted it and said it was very salty at all. Every odd smell makes my stomach turn. Woke up this morning feeling pretty crappy. I think a big part was not getting hydrated throughout the night. Had some water and apple juice and feeling a bit better, but still very shaky. Not suppose to have anything but juice water broth and tea for the first ten days. Problem is I can't stomach the broth or tea. I fly home tomorrow and pretty nervous about that. Any advice or support you could offer would be great! Thanks so much!

    Support needed

My coordinator gave me one of those Isopure protein drinks from GNC and already I can tell it's making a huge difference. I think this is the first decent amount of protein I've had in four days. I know still not nearly enough but it's a good start. I pushed my flight back to Friday just so I have a couple extra days to recover before dealing with a long travel day.
  23. mrs w

    Support needed

Thank you all for the support. I know Protein is key, and I did buy unflavored Protein powder before I left, so my plan was to add that to as much as I could to sneak more protein in. I am allowed sugar free popsicles, and will be going out to buy some today. So far I find Water and ice chips the easiest to manage, so I think sucking on something cold will help. I've added MIO energy to my water, but also needed to dilute it a ton because I found the flavor too overwhelming, so probably getting very little electrolytes in. My coordinator said I could have gatorade and Vitamin water too, so will go grab one today and try that. I'm glad water is going down easy as I've read others have felt nauseous from it. My concern is I am finding most other flavors awful. Worst of all is the smells. Honestly, even the smell of my sweatshirt that was in my suitcase from traveling makes me want to gag and I washed it right before I left. I totally understand this is a process and by no means did I expect to be doing cartwheels by the third day out, just needed some extra support. I know the next month is going to be a rollercoaster of highs and lows, just hoping the lows are fewer and fewer as the days go on. Thank you again!
  24. Tomorrow is my day!!! Flying to San Diego then driving to Tijuana. I don't have an exact surgery time, but guessing it'll be late afternoon. I'm not looking forward to fasting for a full day!

    Low BMI VSG topics?

There are a few threads "BMI 31-32" and "does anyone have 60 lbs or less to lose". They're not super active threads but just reading past comments and questions has helped me feel more comfortable going thru with the sleeve.
