My surgeon and NUT have mine as clear liquids for the first 5 days (or until your first f/u appointment with him which is actually a week). After that I progress to full liquids including cream Soups, Protein Shakes with skim milk or another low fat/sugar option such as almond milk, and any of my previous clear liquids for 2 weeks. Then comes my personal fear, the purree diet for 2 more weeks before introducing soft foods for another 2 weeks. Once the pouch can handle those, introduce regular foods one at a time.

I am 6 days post-op today. My pre-op diet was 10 days of liquid, including 4 Bariatric Advantage Protein Shakes a day (I was never able to get more than 3 in), sugar free Popsicles, sugar free Jello, fat free chicken, beef or vegetable broth and water/crystal light, etc. I was also able to have up to 2 cups of vegetables off of a specific list, either all at once or split through the day. The day before surgery was Clear Liquids only. The point of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver. That makes it easier to get to the stomach with the laparoscopic devices.

According to everything I learned during my prep carbonated beverages are a big no no for the rest of my life. The carbonation can cause excess gas as well as stretch the pouch. According to studies, in over 90% of RNY failures, the person starts drinking sodas again.

My surgery was also on the 24th. During my 6 month prep post op diet was discussed a lot. My surgeon has me on Clear Liquids until I see him on Tuesday. Then I should be able to advance to full liquids for two weeks, then purree food for two weeks before introducing soft foods. I would call the surgeons office and ask what protocol they use, or you can call your nutritionist. Good luck!

Thank you all! I'm glad I'm not alone in this :-)

Hi, my name is Gail and I'm new to the community. I just had my surgery on Monday and was released to come home on Tuesday evening. Pain has been really rough and for some reason I wasn't expecting it to be this bad. I'm a nurse, you would think I would have been prepared, but I feel like a total wuss! My girls started kindergarten today with a one hour mini-session which I made myself go to (I don't think I would forgive myself if I would have missed it) which was rough. I was a big ol' sweaty Betty, walking and rocking myself the entire time, but I was there! I've been walking often, and I'm sipping through the day as much as I can but I haven't been able to get that 48+ oz in that they say yet. Something else I wasn't prepared for was the growling stomach and the urge to eat (I will not break the rules!), but I swear this evening my husband fixed hotdogs for dinner and all I wanted to do was lick one! How sad is that! Anyway, I just wanted to say hi, and vent a little bit. Any and all suggestions/support are greatly welcomed!
