  1. I just had my RNY two days ago, I spent only one night in the hospital because my vitals were great, but I have been in so so much pain. I've really been shocked at the amount of pain I've been in. They gave me Dilaudid (sp?) and it does help some, more than the Oxycodone they started me with. It is, however way easier for me to drink Water than I was expecting which must be a good thing. I don't feel any extra pain when I drink but it still takes forever. I haven't yet gotten in 64oz of water in a day. Today I tried my first Protein shake after getting in about 10 oz of water. I'm using Premier Protein rtd shakes from Sam's Club and they're wonderful. The Protein Shake is also going down very easy but I'm wondering if, like food, I should be trying to get it in within a timeframe. Thankfully walking is getting easier, everything seems to be getting better and best of all I'm not hungry in the slightest even though I've eaten nothing since last Saturday. I really like that. Anyone have any tips, pointers or pearls of wisdom for someone just out of surgery? I'd love to hear the things that helped each of you get through this stage. Joy
  2. @@Nurse_Lenora Coughing does hurt so so much, I've started pressing a pillow against my stomach when I cough and at least it helps to not feel like the incisions are going to pop open. And wow I do have a lot of thick stuff in my lungs trying to get out. I've noticed that every time I walk my body wants to cough it up which I think is great. And thank God the gas pain has left my chest, shoulder and neck that was so terrible.
  3. @@bugsy72 That sounds like a great variety too, good! I've noticed today that I do better with flavored liquids than water just as it is. I've got some orange vanilla mio drops and that is helping a lot today. Premier protein is what I used today and I was actually able to get in 60g protein (my nut wants me to get 60-70) And counting those protein shakes I've gotten about 60 oz of water. It's like a miracle! Just yesterday I didn't think I'd be able to do it. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll be able to keep it up. Thank you so much for your advice I figure if I can get some wisdom from anyone that has been through this, I'll have other ideas when what I'm doing isn't working for me. Thank you thank you!

    Day 1 post op RNY

@@christinamejia I just had surgery on Monday 12/14 and I'm feeling tons of pain. My incisions have bruised very badly and my entire abdomen is killing me. I truly feel like half of my pain is probably from gas and for the first two days I couldn't breathe fully and standing up was very hard. Walking has helped tons. I wasn't expecting this level of pain.
  5. @@goblue9280 I am sleeping so much since I've been home and I think it's helping a lot, fluids are going down far easier than I expected and best I haven't eaten anything since Saturday and I'm not hungry at all....that's the best part
  6. @@James Marusek Thank you so much I'll check it out I just wasn't prepared for the amount of pain at all but it is getting better and better as the hours go by.

    I won't regret this...right?

@@Ravend26 My surgery is tomorrow too! I'm so nervous, I can't sleep it's so hard tonight! I'm a mom & every time I talk to my four-year-old about what I'm doing tomorrow, that I'm going to be spending the night away from home the thought is in the back of the mind that it's possible that I won't be coming home I've never had surgery before and I know there are risks. I've been looking forward to this for so long, I've been so much more scared of what's going to come after than the actual surgery but tonight it's a different story. Tomorrow I hope my excitement for the whole procedure comes back before I get there. This is possibly one of the best decisions I've ever made I'm sure. Best of luck with your surgery! Soon enough we'll be the wise women that have succeeded

    Piggin' out ????

I'm ten days into my pre-op diet and I did do a last meal thing (it was Thanksgiving) and I just had a bit of everything that I wanted instead of following my low carb ways that I've been practicing since last July. THEN it turned into the next day and next day and I had a terrible time with my first four days on my liver shrink diet. I think I would've been way better off if I didn't let myself indulge that way. I even had a breakdown on day four and ate bread and a muffin. They were no where near as good as I thought they would be, but I've been so so so so hungry since I've been on the pre-op diet. Surgery on Monday so I'll hang in there, I don't think it's worth it to have the last meal(s) I'm ten days into my pre-op diet and I did do a last meal thing (it was Thanksgiving) and I just had a bit of everything that I wanted instead of following my low carb ways that I've been practicing since last July. New to BP

Hi Amanda! I'm new too, I'm scheduled for surgery on 12/14. Every question I've had has been answered by people that have gone through it before (whatever it is) This site has been a big help so far! Welcome & Congratulations!
  13. So I know I'll have to take a lot of calcium citrate, my NUT said crunchy chewable. I've read everywhere that people hate this or that calcium, but nowhere, which ones people like & keep calcium levels up. Vitamins also, anyone have any good suggestions?

    Surgery date set!

Isn't it a great feeling to finally be scheduled! I'm scheduled for exactly one week after you 12/14/15, I'm also pretty scared of the liquid diet BUT...It'll be nothing compared to the first few months after surgery. The journey is going to be SO WORTH the destination of true health. Congratulations!!
  15. A lot to be thankful for this year! !
  16. Thank you all so much! Jay to know that there are many things or there working for others makes me feel so much better! I know myself, if something is yuck..I'll not take it and do myself more harm than good for sure. Now I'm looking looking forward to trying some of these.
  17. Thank you so much for this! She said because they don't absorb the same way as the crunchy ones, BUT your levels are good so that must not always be the case! From what everyone is saying ..and knowing myself..I need some of the bariatric advantage chews. I'm much more likely to take them all day if I'm not having a hard time getting them down. Thank you so much!
  18. Wow not bad! Thank you ☺
  19. Thank you! Are the bariatric advantage chews chewy or crunchy? My Nutritionist said only take crunchy vitamins. How are your calcium levels now?
  20. This is awesome! I can't wait to have that day!
  21. I start on November 30th, so I'm sure I will have my food funeral at thanksgiving. It'll no doubt be the happiest funeral I've ever attended lol.
  22. December 14th, in Portland Maine! And CANNOT wait for the next chapter to begin!

To tell or not to tell...

I've only told my family, no one else. I'm going to have the surgery soon and I will feel it out after. I'm not telling Facebook, I'm not telling even friends. Maybe I'll feel differently afterwards and shouting it from the rooftops will be exactly what I need. For now I don't want to have to explain myself or defend my choices. Hopefully the changes in my health will do that for me in the end. Maybe I'm just weak too.

    Mainers!

Hello!! My name is Joy and I'm having surgery at Maine Medical Center in Portland probably in October or November. I joined the weight and wellness program there back in June and I've lost almost 20lbs, I have an appointment with the surgeon on 10/01 This is terrifying and awesome! I'm very happy about my decision to do this. How far along in your journey are you?
