Looking for any April surgeries
ange117 replied to claddagh66's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It went well. I was April 4th, so I'm a week out today. Still sore, but meeting my Protein and Water goals. Luckily, I haven't had any nausea since the first day. I did have a small intestinal hemorrhage in the hospital and lost a good bit of blood, so I've been sleeping a lot to let my body heal. But really, I can't believe how quickly the last week has gone by! Good luck to those of you coming up! -
I have been using unsweetened soy milk for my Protein shakes (I'm 6 days post-op), but today I used skim lactaid milk instead, and added 12 oz of milk to thin down my shake as I'm a little low on fluids today. I managed to drink it in just under and hour, and it wasn't until just now when I put it in myfitnesspal that I realized 12 oz of lactaid milk is 18 grams of sugar. That seems like a lot, but I feel totally fine? I wasn't intending to 'test' whether I'd get dumping syndrome or not until I was WELL along in my recovery, but this was an accident. How much sugar does it take those of you who dump to start feeling the symptoms? I'm not sure how I feel about this, tbh. lol Both relieved and disappointed in the same breath, I suppose.

After how much sugar do you start to dump?
ange117 replied to ange117's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Typically I wouldn't expect milk to cause dumping either, but lactaid milk had added lactase enzyme, which means instead of the complex lactose sugar, all the sugar in the milk is broken down into glucose and galactose, hence my concern. 18g of glucose is a lot, in my mind, but I'm not really sure what is 'normal' yet. -
Liquid diet begins....

You guys have got this!!! Woooo! -
My surgeon sends everyone home on Colace, twice a day. Luckily, I haven't needed it, but if put in a call to your surgeon's office and see what softeners or laxatives they recommend. All that protein and not enough liquid can really bind things up!
-
Hmm, I might have to give Greek yogurt a try! Does it taste similar in tuna salad and the like, or do you end up adding vinegar/mustard for more tart taste?
-
My plan allows coffee the first week post-op, but only decaf. We begin full liquids immediately after surgery, though, and not everyone does. I'd check your surgeon's recommendations or ask your NUT.
-
I mix my chocolate splendor unjury shake with a shot of decaf espresso and either almond or soy milk. No reason you can't use decaf coffee instead of espresso. It's delicious!

I've been eating the Popscicles brand, the ones you see here. I've been able to find them at my local grocer as well as Walmart. They're right next to the regular ones, you just have to read them because the 'sugar free' label isn't exactly screaming at you. They also sell a tropical variety, but I wasn't a huge fan of the flavors.

Looking for April peeps for RNY (Bypass)

I just had mine April 4th! You've got this! -
Got a "Day after Surgery" Question.
ange117 replied to Kelly84's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I did not have any incisions at my bra line, and was able to comfortably wear a sports bra home. I didn't bother with a proper bra with underwire; I was uncomfortable enough as it was, and I just wanted to get home in my own bed. -

I second the baritastic app, though I do use myfitnesspal for food logging. -
To "Bypass" or to "Sleeve"?
ange117 replied to Vagrant Violet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's also worth considering that there's a sleeve-to-bypass revision board on this forum. There are no revisions from bypass short of the very, very rare reversal. I had originally wanted the sleeve, but was advised against it because of my acid reflux, and this is one of the things that made me comfortable with the bypass. Do most people with the sleeve love it and have success with only minor/no complications? Certainly! It's an amazing surgery. But I did find something reassuring in the fact that I was having the 'end line' surgery, so to speak, and there wouldn't be any chance for revisions in my future. I want this to be one and done. -
Liquid diet begins....

If it makes you feel better, I had a known enlarged liver from the abdominal ultrasound, and my surgeon said there are no issues at all with it during the surgery! -
Trouble with protein/fluid intake
ange117 replied to myglassesareon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel like it's hesitation on my part, too! I can definitely get the shakes down, but it's uncomfortable, so I shy away from it. I'm trying to find that line between uncomfortable and painful and learn to stop there. It's hard! -
Hello from the other side!
ange117 replied to ange117's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I came home yesterday afternoon, and aside from a ton of sleeping, I've been pretty good. Clear liquids go down fine, but my Protein shake is a bit more of a challenge. Right now I'm getting 2 shakes down a day, but I'm supposed to be getting 3 plus 3 protein 'Snacks.' Frankly I'm not even awake long enough for that, so I'm really focusing on fluids and getting in protein as I can. I know it'll get better over the next week or so. My shoulders are still killing me from the gas. x_x I am VERY ready for that to go away now. I'm still very weak and tired from the blood loss, but I'm trying to push fluids to let my body make more. scale says I'm down 6.3 lbs this week. -
Well, I made it. Surgery was at 9:15am Monday morning. Surgery went off without a hitch. Tuesday morning, I started fluids by mouth, had no issue. By the afternoon I developed an intestinal bleed, so I haven't had anything by mouth since then, but it seems to have stopped now, so we're back on track. The bleed has earned me an extra night at the hospital, but all said and done, I've been doing really well! Hello, post-op, here we go!

How are all the April 4's doing?
ange117 replied to Monie717's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm still in the hospital due to an intestinal bleed, but I've been able to keep down a shake and a bunch of water, so I'm looking forward to going home tomorrow! Pain has been moderate, but bearable. I'm on norco now, but they had me on morphine when I wasn't taking anything by mouth. -
4/4 Surgery buddies --- home stretch!
ange117 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know there's a bunch of us all going in on 4/4!! How are you guys feeling??? I'm starting Clear liquids tomorrow and I just got my arrival time for 7:15 Monday morning!!! Ahhhhh! I attended my seminar on 6/28/15 and more than 9 months later, and now the time is actually here!!!!! So excited! (And a little terrified!) What are you guys doing to prepare?? -
chia seeds? are they safe for sleeves?
ange117 replied to crazyplantlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't imagine ever eating chia seeds dry, tbh. They're small and too hard and get stuck in your teeth. I am a huge fan of chia seed pudding. You can Google a million recipes for this, but my favorite is chia seeds, unsweetened almond milk, a banana, and cinnamon to taste. I'll probably consider adding Protein powder to this after surgery! I also sometimes put them in a smoothie. -
I've had it in both feet at different times, and was able to avoid surgery by doing LOTS of stretching at home and only wearing proper shoes all the time (even at home). It did take maybe 12 weeks or so to heal each foot and I looked like a goof wearing TEVA sandals all over the house, but it worked!

I didn't think it was so literal
ange117 replied to csawesome's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Between the gas and the diarrhea, is there any chance you're lactose intolerant?? Lots of people are fine eating things like cheese and yogurt but once they start living on milk and whey protein, they realize they have mild lactose intolerance. If you're using a shake that isn't 100% whey isolate, I'd try switching, and try making them with Lactaid milk or soy instead! -
I was asked to stop 4 weeks before and not to start them again for 4 weeks weeks after bc birth control and surgery both increase the risk for blood clots, so they don't want to stack your risk factors.

"unflavored" protein to mix with coffee?
ange117 replied to crazyplantlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use espresso in the morning and mix 2 shots with 8 oz of unsweetened almond milk and a scoop of the unjury chocolate splendor for breakfast. I love it! I imagine if you used coffee and unjury, it'd be pretty much the same. Just make sure your coffee is under 140F so the protein doesn't denature and get all clumpy. -
Water/Protein is a full time job
ange117 replied to DeletedMember's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still found it to be frothy. I suppose I could have let it settle for a few hours, but the whey flavor just drove me away from it. I'm sticking to unjury, now. None of that weird taste.
