    Drainage amount after surgery

Mine drained horribly after surgery. I ended up putting a ABD pad over the whole site, so that all of my clothes didn't get ruined. My drain came out day one (doctor thought it was clotted off). I changed the dressing where the drain came out 7-8 times a day, because it drained so much. These went on for 2 days before it started slowing up. I am a nurse so I could handle it. My husband on the other hand was a trooper, he typically can't stand the site of blood. He changed the dressing for me every time with no complaints or passing out.
  3. Thanks for the suggestions on this thread! I am definitely going to check the out.
  4. Funny you posted this today. We had surgery on the exact same day. I am having the same problem and thoughts. I was in the shower today wondering when the hair lose was ever going to stop. My started about a month after surgery and hasn't slowed down. My hair is half as thick as it was at the beginning. Thank goodness I had thick hair to start with or I would have none at all by this point.

    Thoughts to ponder

I stopped at the store yesterday and bought a 20lb container of kitty litter for my feline children. I was carrying it into the house and thought wow this weighs a lot. I had the sudden thought you use to carry 2 1/2 of these around on your body everyday (I have lost 50lb since starting my journey pre-op). No wonder you didn't want to do anything. It amazed me that my body used to carry around that extra weight. This thought is one of my current motivator 3 months post op that keeps me moving in the right direction. I still have a ways to go to get to goal, but this one crazy thought is keeping me motivated right now. I see what I have already been able to do already a few months out (climbing stairs at a football stadium, walking on the beach, and snorkeling) I c an only image what I will be able to do when I reach my goal weight. Who else has one of those Ahhh haa moments about their current weight loss?

    Holiday/ vacation woes

I know exactly how you feel! I just returned from a week on San Pedro island in Belize. I was able to enjoy activities that I haven't done in a very long time. I snorkeled with sting rays and nurse sharks for hours and on a coral reef another day. I wasn't totally embarrassed to be in a swimsuit (even though the other women I was with are tiny). We walked and enjoyed the island for hours each day. We went with several couples, but only my husband and one other couple knew I had sleeve surgery. At the beginning of the vacation, I got really down when we were eating (of course my luck we went out for every meal). However, after a couple of days I decided I wasn't going to let it get me down. I actually started having fun at each meal getting to try everyone's proteins. I stopped ordering a meal and got a bite off of everyone's meal (I didn't want to be wasteful). It was like getting to try everything on the menu, but not having to order anything. I skipped the sides, but would get bites of fish, pork and beef all at the same time. I never had to decide what I wanted. The only downside was they all found a awesome bakery that they stopped at every morning. I would eat a half of a protein bar before I went then decide who had the best looking pastry that morning and take a small bite. It was my one small indulgence while on vacation. When I got back from vacation, I had lost a pound. You won't hear a complaint from me about that. Typically I go on vacation and gain 5 pounds. So with that being said, I will chalk this vacation up to a small victory. We travel a lot, so this gives me encouragement for trip to come.

how long to take off work? RN here

I don't work on a unit, but I am a Nurse Manager. My advice is to take off as long as possible. We as care givers forget to take care of ourselves more often than not. Not sure what shift you work, but if you work on a busy unit it is hard to take the time for yourself that you need. This is how many of us ended up the way that we are. I am a little over 2 months out. I find that the only time that I get sick is while I am at work. It is usually because I wait to long to eat, then scarf down some food because I am so hungry. About 30 minutes later it makes a reappearance. This is a time to take care of you, so take it. This is just one persons advice.
  14. I posted something similar when I went to my pre-op class. I had the same stares and questions. One person even asked me how much I had lost since my surgery in the waiting room of the MD office. I started at a similar BMI as you (37). However, this is the best decision that I have made for myself. I am already down 40lbs in my couple of month journey. I am happier now then I have been in a long while. I have already had many weight lose victories (hitting below 200) and non scale victories (fitting in airline seats, stadium seats, and overall energy increase when doing activities) that it is all worth it. Don't let them get to you. This is something you are doing to make you a healthier lighter you. From my perspective even with the low post-op, it it has defiantly been worth the journey. Keep your head up and your eye on the prize!

    Paying out of pocket

I had my first visit June 30, 2015. I had surgery August 6. I could of had mine the week before, but I had too much to do in preparation of taking 2 1/2 weeks off. I was self pay in the U.S.

  19. My Fall NSV happened this weekend. I went to a pro football game. I was able to sit in the seat with room to spare. I we also walked 5 miles a day and took the stadium stairs up and down with no problems or the need to stop and rest. I was so excited!
  20. P3 are a definite. I take them to work with me sometimes when I don't have time to make a proper lunch. I keep a stock in my fridge, since they are quick and easy. I agree that I have to remember that life no longer revolves around food. I hope it gets easier with time. Thanks for the advice on the protein powder with soup. It isn't something that I have tried yet.
  21. My husband and I are flying to Buffalo, New York this weekend for a long weekend get away to see some friends we haven't seen in a few years and go to a football game. I am right about 2 months out from surgery. I can eat most Proteins, but don't really eat much more because I don't have room in my tummy. I have only eaten out once since surgery and I was still in the Soup phase then. I am concerned about eating while we are gone. We are staying in a hotel and eating out most meals then tailgating for the game. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated?
  22. I wasn't a big fish fan pre-op, but it is quickly becoming a new favorite of my new tummy post-op.

    Gastric sleeve and birth control

I had to stop mine 2 weeks before surgery and wasn't allowed to take the, again until a month after surgery. The reason for the stopping of birth control is the risk for blood clot formation after surgery. The birth control increases the risk even further. I started mine back a couple of weeks ago. I make sure to take them by themselves for the increase absorption and no interference with other things. Hope this helps!
  24. Thanks for some of the tips and suggestions. I will definitely use them. I have eaten protein bars yet. I have tried to stay away from them due to the carbs. However for only a meal a day for a couple of days, it should not be to bad. Does anyone have any favorite bars they eat? I think I'll also try throwing some jerky and nuts in my carry on bag/purse so I won't be without something if I get in a situation.
