goblue9280 got a reaction from jess9395 in C25k. Keeping myself honest
5k complete. Beautiful weather, and had a blast. I did much better than expected and ran it in 30:30 (mile splits were 9:42, 9:42, 10:13, so really close to sub 30). My 14-year old daughter finished first in the under 19 group with a time of 25:44. My 12 year old son (no training and never ran anything) finished 4th overall and 1st in the under 19 male group with a time of 21:44... so sub 7 min pace the little sh!?, lol. A figure a few more 5k's under my belt and I'll be ready to start working towards the 10K.
Btw, today is my first surgiversary... reason I picked this 5k.

Thanks for the tips, ladies and guys! I guess I'm ready, ran pretty much a 5k tonight (3.06 miles according to Nike app.) my splits were interesting: 1st mile in 10:53, 2nd in 10:47, 3rd in 10:09. I really pushed myself over the last mile to simulate how I think I'll likely run on Saturday... steady pace to start and pick it up over the final mile. Ready for Saturday... I'll make sure to let you all know how we did.
Maybe in a year or two we could have a team of BariatricPal runners meet up and run the Boston Marathon... something to shoot for!

Well, just a few days away. Have not been able to run much the past 2 weeks (too much home drama.) Finished the C25K program tonight 5 minute warmup walk... then jogged 33 mins at right around an 11 min mile pace... so I'm right there for Saturday. I had wanted to get to a sub 30 for my first 5k but I'm just going to enjoy it and shoot for sub 33 minute. I'll probably do another run Thursday night and then rest until Saturday morning.

goblue9280 got a reaction from OKCPirate in Guys who started over 400 lbs.
I'm 35 and had gastric bypass. Started at 425 with diabetes, high cholesterol/triglycerides, high blood pressure... and probably sleep apnea though never tested. I just passed 6 months out and have lost around 150 pounds. Best decision I ever made. Daily life is 10 times easier. My surgeon had no reservations regarding doing surgery. I did the standard 2-week liquid pre-op diet that he prescribes to everyone. It was tough, but I stuck to it. Surgery was one morning, and I was released the next day around noon. Was off of pain meds within 2 days... and back at work (desk job) by day 6 post-op
Weight came off quickly. I've never had any serious complications. Never had issues introducing new foods when my post-op diet allowed for a new phase. Only time I ever dumped was when I overate a little bit due to eating too fast.
Energy is through the roof, I'm off of most of my meds, and will likely be off all after my next checkup. I sleep much better, and apparently hardly snore anymore. I've gotten back to doing things I haven't done in 10+ years, like assisting on the ice with my kids hockey practice. I no longer worry about stuff like "does that restaurant only have booths" or "I hope they don't have folding chairs at my kids school play." I've flown on an airplane again no needing an extender and with the arms down. I don't sweat the minute the temp rises above 65 deg F (in fact I'm cold all the time.) Sex is much better. I could go on and on. Only negative thus far has been my weight loss has started to slow at 6 months out... but I also am not putting much effort into working out, so once I kick that up, I'm sure it will improve.

I started the 10K app. Wowza. I am proud that I did week 9 (so week 1 of 10K). However my hip has been hurting. In the last 6 minutes of the run my hip hurt so I walked. Ran a little again and never should have pushed it. I am going to a dr tomorrow as I was in severe pain but it is now a bit better 28 hours later. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an antinflamatory that isn't an nsaid.
I still feel great for doing a full hour! A full hour!! Wow!!!

I don't talk about it outside of close friends and family. People ask all the time how I did it... I tell them eat less, move more (with eating being the primary focus.) I didn't tell people at work, though I'm sure they figured it out since it all corresponded to me being out for surgery for a week. I know I could be a great advocate for surgery, but I simply don't have the time... too many people that I don't feel like dealing with have a negative opinion of the surgery so that's why I decided to go the route I did with not bringing it up. I'm not embarrassed about it, though... I have shared my struggles with others that are of the size that bariatric surgery should probably be something to consider.

Absolutely. Everything seemed to happen so quick once I started making the appointments... NUT class, stress test, upper GI, 2 week pre-op diet... next thing I knew, it was the morning of surgery and I was terrified. Never had major surgery before or been under other than wisdom teeth. Only complication I was truly afraid of was waking up in the middle of surgery. Two things I'll never forget... being wheeled down to the operating room, and being laid out on the table. Next thing I remember was waking up in recovery. Since then it has been a whirlwind of a year. Once the recovery period ends and you start eating normal foods again, you'll be shocked at how quickly your quality of life improves. The weight really does melt away... you sleep better, you have more energy, you have better sex, even your mental health will likely improve from all of the physical improvements.
My biggest regret is I dragged my feet for a year knowing I would eventually have this surgery. I wouldn't waste 2-3 months of time delaying it... get it done and start living your new life!

My only regret with my sleeve surgery is that I didn't do it sooner.
You've been approved. It's gonna cost you $1,800.
I grew tired of the bullcrap delays my insurance company was tossing around. I spent the funds I'd been planning on using for a new car and self funded the surgery. That sped things up significantly.
There is a lot of running around for you right now.....but think of it this way....the appointments will only help to keep you laser focused on the weight loss you can achieve on your way towards surgery.

There are two types of bariatric patients. Those who are chomping at the bit to get the surgery and get going, and those who have fear, cold feet, buyers remorse... however you want to put it. All I can say being on the other side for coming up to four years banded in January, is.....do it man! All the nonsense with timing, appointments, family stuff, personal stuff, whatever...is just that. Nonsense.
Don't procrastinate my friend. Jump into the deep end. Believe me...you will be in such a better place a year from now. Why delay that? And so you know...I went into this kicking and screaming. I would have done anything to avoid it but my back was against the wall as I was heading towards a wheelchair full time. This is me just over a year ago and the before pic was easily 50 lbs. less than I was day of surgery. So..not only no wheelchair in that picture, but here I was riding a friggin' bike in preparation for a trip to London...which included a ton of walking. So believe me when I say that the grin you see is 'gen-you-wine' happiness. Time for you to have your happiness too.
    Good luck!!

Started eating salads without discomfort at about 3 months out. Per surgeons orders made sure to chew very well. I love greens from a visual standpoint because what looks like a large volume on your plate ends up taken up a small volume in your pouch. 10+ months out and I generally have a salad every day for one meal. I like to add Beans or half a veggie burger to my salad greens for extra Protein and usually some sliced almonds, grape tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil vinaigrette. Also, some fresh ground pepper and salt!

Micah, I had the gastric bypass and eat a predominantly vegan diet... though I do occasionally still have some lean chicken and dairy. My surgeon (Garth Davis) advocates a mostly vegetarian/vegan diet... and recently wrote a book call proteinaholic. If you're on Facebook, I'd recommend liking his page, and also joining the WLS Vegetarian group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1646059515642538/

As I guy, I don't think my expectation would be for the girl to bring up any physical "faults" (probably not the right word) she thinks she has... in fact I'd probably find it a bit off-putting that she brought it up as I'd be thinking "does she really think I'm that shallow?"
That being said it's going to come down to the type of guy you're dating... by the time you get to the point of taking off your clothes, I'm guessing you'll know whether it's a narcissistic douche that may have an issue with it... in which case you probably shouldn't be taking off your clothes anyway, lol.
