  1. There is no standard program... every surgeon is different. Follow the info provided by your surgeon/nutrionist Do you have contact info for your NUT (nutritionist)? If so call or email and ask them what stage you should be on. I came home on a full liquid diet... had my first appt 1 week out and was moved to pureed foods... at 3 weeks out went to soft foods.

    Male Before and After Pictures

Have they mentioned a rationale for pushing a vegetarian lifestyle? I've never heard of such a thing. Sent from my SM-T357T using Tapatalk Well, my bariatric surgeon (Garth Davis) has become a big vegan advocate as a means to curtail the obesity epidemic in this country. He became a vegan a few years back, saw health benefits and has since looked into deeply and feels it's the best diet. He has a book that just came out called Proteinaholic which (my understanding is as I have not read it) goes into detail about the science behind us eating too much protein and instead moving to a plant based diet. That being said, he is not pushy about it with his patients. His dad is also a bariatric surgeon at the same practice. The handouts they give and the nutrition class are not vegan/plant based but rather focus on eating protein first (getting 70-80g per day.) In fact when you walk in the front door, they have an entire storefront of Bariatric Advantage protein powders and Meal Replacements. I don't recall seeing a single vegan Protein powder in there. I eat meat/dairy everyday, but not every meal. I always have a premier Protein shake per day as well (30g.) I'm not entirely sure how to get in 70-80g of protein per day on my restrictive diet of 3-4 small meals of 1/2 cup if I were to go vegan. It might be doable when I'm up to 1 cup of food per meal, but not right now. I've asked my NUT that exact question, but did not get much of an answer. I'm going in for my 2 month followup next week, so I'll be sure to ask. Based on his book, I'm guessing his response is that down the road when I'm maintaining, I won't need that much protein. Again though, I wonder how I could possibly build muscle on a caloric restricted vegan diet with little protein... doesn't seem scientifically possible. I've visited his facebook page, and he often posts links about vegan fitness buffs and bodybuilders... but I suspect many of them became vegan well after the muscles.

    Male Before and After Pictures

I feel like I have the energy to start lifting weights 3 days a week. I have a weight bench at home and a set of powerblock adjustable dumbbells that go from 5-50lbs each. I've been poking around online for a beginner dumbbell workout. I'm worried about being able to build muscle due to the caloric restriction. I've asked my Doc/NUT and have not received much feedback. Online resources regarding building muscle after gastric bypass are scarce. Furthermore, my Doc actually encourages adapting a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle... which further complicates things if I go that route. Currently I'm eating meat, and getting around 80g of Protein a day.

Damn dude, you're looking awesome. Very inspiring! How long after surgery did you start hitting the gym? I'm two months out today, my NUT wanted me to wait at least until then to start lifting any weights. All I've done so far is walking, but I'm starting to feel a lot more energetic like I can up my effort.

Guy's Room - Just some dude talking sh_t!

I remember my 2-week pre-op liquid diet, and the terrible diarrhea... I was warned that I would have the reverse problem soon. How true that is. If I'm ever slightly down on my Water intake, I get backed up sometimes for 3-4 days. I used to be a multi-sh_t per day kinda guy, so going days between is very odd.

How much Water do you get in each day? Are you taking/consuming anything that acts as a diuretic? Have you noticed any change in your BM's when you have increeased/decreased your water consumption? For me, constipation usually happens when I'm low on water for a day or two in a row. When I get in plenty of water I have no issues. When constipated, I usually take one miralax and bump up my water consumption... that usually gets me back to normal within 24hrs.
  7. I am about 2 months out (Oct. 1st) and I've been sticking to 1/2 cup mostly. Lately I've been going a tad over 1/2 cup. I'm sure I could also eat 3/4 cup no problem. According to my doc/nut I'm suppose to work up to between 3/4 and 1 cup by the time I'm 6 months out. I've never experienced an "I can't eat another bite" feeling. I just make sure to limit myself. Generally I eat 3 small meals a day and have one premier Protein drink. Sometimes when I'm up early and go to bed late, I have a 4th small meal in the late evening. I've never dumped, and have been introucing lots of new foods (fruits and veggies) in the past couple weeks while still making sure to get in my daily protein goal. My opinion, you are perfectly normal. There is so much variation between patients, thus there is no standard/normal experience. I've had the same worries (i.e. could my pouch be too big) but the way I see it, it is better than the alternative of never being able to eat and constantly dumping.

    I'm finally warm!

Grew up in Michigan but have been in TX the past 8 years. I have always been way too hot... sweating constantly which makes me anxious and causes me to sweat more... endless cycle. One of the first thing I noticed post-op is how cold I felt, and how much less I was sweating. Was up in Chicago a couple weeks ago, temps were around 50 and I was miserable. Had a hooded sweatshirt on with a fleece jacket and gloves, but still freezing. On the positive side, it will be nice to get outside during the summer again. I've avoided the outdoors the from April thru September the past few years due to the heat/sweating/anxiety.

    Pre op liquid diet

Pre-op diets vary so much, you won't get a clear answer to your question even from medical professionals regarding your liver, so best to follow your surgeons program. My advice, do your best not to cheat. I found my 2-week pre-op diet gave me the mental strength to know I can do this.
  10. Became so upset with a customer service rep, I swore at them over the phone... not my finest moment. Taking breaths and calming down as it's going to be a great turkey day with my wife an kids. Have a lot to be thankful for tomorrow, and it's easy to forget that at times. Will deal with T-Mobile after the weekend.

  11. Turkey Meatballs with Zucchini So I kind of came up with this recipe and I've made it a few times this week. I plan on making it tomorrow in a bigger batch for the family as an appetizer/side dish. I like it because it takes me under 10 mins to prep and cook, and uses very few ingredients... hard to mess up. Ingredients: 3 small frozen turkey meatballs (I have a couple bags of kroger brand in the freezer) fresh garlic - 1 clove (remove skin, cut in half longways) olive oil - 1-2 tsp half a medium zucchini (I core it with a spoon and cut it into small pieces about 1/2" long and 1/4" wide) 2-3 tablespoons of tomato/spaghetti sauce (I'm using light smart by prego) grated or shredded Parmesan (2 tsp or so) salt to taste Recipe: Heat olive oil in small saucepan over medium heat Saute garlic for a minute or so... remove before it browns/burns Add zucchini to the pan of oil and toss to coat Heat meatballs 30 seconds or so in the microwave to defrost, then cut them in half Add meatballs to pan cooking them on both sides to desired crust Cook zucchini to desired doneness (I like mine nicely brown and super soft) Remove pan from heat and let cool for a minute or so Add tomato sauce and quickly toss to coat meatballs and zucchini (could also be done in a mixing bowl, as you want to do this fast so the tomato sauce doesn't burn in the pan) Plate and top with Parmesan and salt to taste. I bought a can of kraft grated Parmesan with Italian seasoning that I like, but fresh would probably be even better. Anyhow, I love how it comes out... very filling. MyFitnessPal calculates it around 160 calories, 10g Protein, 10g of fat, 8g carbs for the above serving.

    Diabeties

Here's how it went for me. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic right before I moved to Texas almost 9 years ago. I didn't go see a doctor down here until about a year or so later, at which point I was diagnosed as type 2. Started on Metformin and glimipiride. Ended up switching off of Metformin and going with 2 doses of glimipiride due to diarrhea issues. Had been on that up until last year when my blood sugar kept getting up between 250-350. Was started on lantus daily insulin injection... kept increasing dose, but never was able to bring my blood sugar down as I was eating like crap. I was usually in the 300-350 range right up until I started the 2-week pre-op diet in September. After starting the 2 week pre-op (all liquid) diet, my numbers started dropping drastically within a day or so, so I stopped taking the Lantus and have not taken it since. I also cut my glimipiride in half leading up to surgery. Since surgery, I'm taking 1/4 of the glimipiride dose I was taking before. Honestly, I haven't been checking my sugar levels, because I probably don't even need that anymore. I'll wait until December to see what my A1c says. Additionally, I'm off my cholesterol meds and only taking one of my blood pressure meds (will likely taper off that soon as well.)
  13. Happy Thanksgiving BG, you look great! I'll likewise be making your crustless pumpkin pie for tomorrow. First thing I notice about a lot of these progress pictures is how much healthier everyone looks in the eyes/face. It's like taking a decade or more of years off in just a matter of months. You're around 3/4 of the way to your goal, can't wait to see the pics when you finish off that final 1/4!
  14. Found an interesting review of this surgeon on another site... sounds very familiar. "My first post op visit I had lost 14 lbs. My 3 month post op visit I had lost a total of 35 lbs. At my 6 month visit I had only lost an additional 3 lbs. I never lost anything after that. Dr. Lucktong told me I wasn't eating right and needed to exercise more. I had a physical demanding job and was doing Water aerobics 4 days per week. When I went back to him 3 years post op I was 25 lbs heavier than my pre surgery weight. He told me that I had stretched my pouch out and insurance would not cover a revision. I asked if I needed to come back anymore and he said no. I am now seeing another surgeon who found gastro gastric fistula and said that my stomach was never completely stapled from my pouc h in the original surgery. Dr. Lucktong wouldn't listen to me and would not even consider the fact that maybe there was something wrong. March 31, 2011"
  15. Anyone have issues with evening/night hunger or tips on controlling it? Typically I have zero hunger in the morning and it builds through out the day. I'm working hard to try and get myself on schedule where I eat 3 small meals a day plus a mid morning Protein shake and an afternoon snack. However, I'm finding I routinely have hunger before bed, and sometimes will have a small meal/snack which I know isn't good right before bed. I'm sticking to my portion limit of 1/2 cup of food. Here's my typical day: I pretty much force myself to eat something around 9-10am (like a pouch of tuna, or 1.5 veggie Breakfast patties) then I'll have a premier Protein Shake around noon, small meal around 2pm, if I need it a snack around 4-5pm (2/3's of a yogurt or cheese stick) and then finally a small meal around 7-8pm (usually 1/2 cup of refried black Beans or turkey chili or another tuna pouch.) Then I may have something around 10-11pm... I'll do something like a bit of sauteed zucchini, or a no sugar added fruit cup... but occasionally it may be 1/2 cup portion of beans/chili/etc. I've read quite a bit elsewhere that it is likely due to buildup of stomach acid. Eating causes the stomach acid to empty, thus relieving the hunger. Anyone else find ways to deal with the acid buildup without resorting to eating?

    One Pot Recipes

Surprisingly, all of my kids liked this recipe: http://www.food.com/recipe/hungry-girl-buffalo-chicken-dip-413265 Very easy to make and divide into portions. I also think it tastes even better when nuked the next day.

    Wasting food mental issue

I'm a little different, if leftovers make it into the fridge, I have no issues watching them spoil and then throwing them out. However, I've always been a member of the "clean the plate" club. So I have to be extremely careful about measuring out my portions because if it's on my plate, I'm going to try to eat it.
  18. @@winklie I was laughing thinking about a middle-aged, ex-milatary white guy in sagging pants. Just embrace the sag! Get yourself some plaid boxers, a chain wallet and a skateboard.
  19. These are the belts I've used for years... can always get at least a year or two out of one. Mine is way too long, but it can easily be trimmed off. Cinches tight for me with no sagging issues.
  20. I'm taking the following (linked), all are Bariatric Advantage brand: Multi w/iron - 3 times per day Chewable Probiotic - Once per day, take in the morning with my first multivitamin Vitamin D - Once per day, take a lunch with my 2nd multivitamin Calcium Citrate (500mg) - 3 times per day, spaced two hours after taking multivitamins My surgeon also has me on 40mg of Nexium and Ursodiol twice a day, but those shouldn't be permanent.

    Addicted to BP

I think it would be an interesting study to compare WLS patients that frequently engage here versus those that attend support groups versus those that don't seek outside support. This site has been has been absolutely vital to my WLS journey, and I know will play a huge role in my long term success.

    The thoughtless comments

My wife is overweight and when I had my surgery, she went on a diet. She has been extremely frustrated, as she hasn't been losing much weight. I'm 6 weeks out and I haven't told her how much I've lost since week 2 as it just depresses her. She works nights, and I think that's one of the biggest contributors to why she is struggling to lose weight. She told me the other night that she wants me to lose weight, but only to a point... and that point is she doesn't want me to weigh less than her. I know she supports me, loves me and wants me to succeed, but I recognize this is an emotional journey for her as well. I can be tough at times, because I feel I've become closed off to her with regards to the weight loss... with that, I'm thankful to have this forum where I can open up to the BP community.

In typical Lions fashion they did everything they could to give it away... but just couldn't get the job done! First win in Green Bay since I was 11, lol.
