Cut carbs, now I can't sleep?
Dub replied to Caribear's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was doing the pre-op monthly counseling.....I cut calories as per my NUT's suggested plan. I wound up switching bariatric centers after two months because the opportunity presented itself to have the surgery in 6 weeks vs waiting longer. I then cut carbs as well as calories. Kept carbs under 50 grams per day. I did notice tow things fairly soon after: 1) Overall energy began to improve. Not a turbo charged amount, lol, but a steady feel of being able to do what I wanted and not getting tired. 2) A much reduced desire to snack. The old me was a bigtime night snacker. I lost the urges to do this. As a result I'd find myself lying in bed at night and being somewhat restless. I came up with a workaround plan that was spot on. I simply made my last meal of the day a Protein shake.....specifically a casein Protein Shake. Optimum Nutrition makes a great casein powder. This stuff is a slow digesting type of protein. It keeps you feeling full for longer. I'd have one of these and go to bed feeling like I'd had a nice meal and would be able to sleep with ease. -
What's your experience been with alcohol after surgery?
Dub replied to LisaAdams50's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I waited about three months. Gained the approval from my surgeon. I've still not had beer....and will continue not having beer. Carbonation isn't something I like...don't want the burps....and the calories from beer are not friendly to my weight loss efforts at this time. Quality vodka or tequila mixed with very low calorie mixer or fresh squeezed lime juice and such are what I drink when I want an adult drank. I'll equate the impact as being on par with how it was pre-op....just slightly stronger than before. I attribute this to drinking on an empty stomach....and whatever differences the smaller stomach contribute. I can still drink at a good clip....just not so fast or much. I'd certainly recommend you test drive that first drink in the comfort and safety of your own home before doing it in public. Know what you're getting yourself into beforehand. -
This is just one example of the flavors offered..... http://www.bumblebee.com/products/tuna/bumble-bee-spicy-thai-chili-seasoned-tuna-pouch/ I keep a variety of these in my desk drawer at work.

Ten months out.......tried some Diet Pepsi.......
Dub replied to Dub's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It was a funny experience. No harm came from it. It just reinforced the fact that I should keep my Water bottle around at all times on the job. It'd been a while since I had pizza and the saltiness of the toppings was a cottonmouth experience for sure. Thirsty dude after. Curious about the "floating away" feeling, lol. I haven't heard that term before Burping while talking.....after not burping much at all for almost a year......interdasting....very interdasting. I can only imagine that I was giving those present the same WTF? look as they were giving me, lol. The "floating away" feel was sorta what it felt like with my insides.....like they were floating up higher in my chest. I know they weren't at all....just felt weird. There wasn't any pain or other issues......just this inordinate amount of burping that was occurring. It was not unlike the clown cars at the circus.....where 69 clowns come falling out of the car. All is well........at least I didn't hurl in public. -
Very common. Many experience enhanced vascularity or at least the visibility of such. Fat is being burned away. The fat loss for me was most noticeable in my extremities at the beginning. Seems like it took much longer to become noticeable around my torso.

When Was Everyone Cleared for "Real" Food
Dub replied to ChunkyMonkeyGoneSlim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Confusion is one of the things that seems to begin early on....as in the puree stage. It seems there are allowances made to allow many foods due to their soft mushy texture......but not allow those same foods later as they aren't good for weight loss. For me it was simply easier to avoid them throughout as I'd been on low-carb Protein shakes for weeks. Why the hell would I introduce high carbohydrate foods back....only to wean off them again ? It just seemed simpler to sidestep that minefield and stay low carb and not be tormented with carb cravings and such. I'd be willing to venture a bet that folks that report post op hunger would find this go away if they'll transition away from sugars and simple carbohydrates. Just my two cents based on my own experiences. -
It is very common. Numerous threads on it. My surgeon clued me in on the likelihood of such just prior to my starting the liquid diet. Not sure why more don't do the same with their patients.

Trying to quit smoking?
Dub replied to loca_lette813's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Huge respect for you making this change right along with all the other stuff. I'm grateful that I quit years back. I went cold turkey, but if I were trying to do so now.....I'd be having a serious conversation with my doctor about Chantix and learning enough to make the decision to use it or not. It seems like it is effective for many. -
Spin Off thread: do people comment often?
Dub replied to finding_onederland's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose to be upfront with folks. It has been the biggest non-issue. When I get comments they are always positive. They know I feel much better and that's all that really matters. Hoping to feel better was the reason I had WLS. -
Worried about gas pains after surgery
Dub replied to ChristinasSleeveStory's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some folks have zero pain from this, too. If you do....then walk it out. -
Can you stretch your sleeve
Dub replied to Jesm1029's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Any kinds of almonds i bought some salt and vinegar and some habannaro bbq but i wanted to buy some honey roasted but wasnt sure if i could the grams of sugar was 4g compared to the other 2 which have 2gram and i believe they had 7g of carbs compare to the 2 i have which are 5g should i be eating these period they have 6g protein per serving ? Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App You are probably not going to want to hear this.....but the answer is "Neither". Nuts are really not something you want to be fooling with at this point in the game. Way too caloric. If you feel you simply can't live without them, then buy the 100 calorie packs and stick to just a single pack. 8 weeks has you in the prime timeframe to be in hardcore weight loss and sticking firmly to your plan. Meals vs Snacks. Snacking is an old behavior from the past that we have to learn to stop doing. All foods will be able to be enjoyed down the road....in very close moderation.....but all foods are certainly on the menu. It's just a matter of if you are willing to take on the calories and lack of nutrition that come with some of them. Right now.....it's the time to burn it off. I had to learn this the hard way with nuts and cheeses. -
What do you tell the waiter/server?
Dub replied to IveGotThePower's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have a relationship with my waitresses. It starts with a smile and a promise. I tell 'em that I'm not hungry by powerfully thirsty and hate when my my glass gets empty. They keep 'em coming and I tip nicely. I don't go out to eat very often......prefer to do it myself at the house on the grill. -
Well, I guess I deserved it!
Dub replied to nursegettingheathy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yup....sugar alcohol is not fun for me, either. My system doesn't handle it well at all. Stick to staying hydrated and stick with your plan. It's going to work out perfectly for you. -
For me the losing is sorta based on momentum. I was on a pretty good pace going into the surgery.....and was amazed at the amount of weight gain that occurred during the hospital stay.....it flushed out quickly and things really amped up in the weeks ahead. I'm guessing that it'll take you a couple weeks and things will kick into gear for you, too.

coffee helps me kill any cravings. Then some exercise will finish it off.

Liver shrink... Am I eating to many carbs?
Dub replied to rmarylee09's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
The folks that want to do their part to ensure a safe surgery follow it to a tee. The ones that find they can't would be best served to delay their surgeries as they simply are not ready and need more time to get their mental game ready for the changes needed. -
Here is another brand that is even better: http://www.bumblebee.com/products/tuna/?page_num=2 do you mix them with anything else? is one packet enough? Thanks! Nope. Simply rip the top open and grab a fork and go to town. On pouch was a meal for me up until I hit the 6 month point. Then I started having two. Those look amazing, especially the buffalo-style pack. Can you eat it from the pouch, or does it have to be mixed with anything? I eat them right from the pouch.

My thoughts....?????' Get yer man to provide something more interesting.

"We are going through so much right now" ^^^^^^^ all the more reason to proceed and do this for YOU. He'll likely come around and support you when he sees how much better you feel after your weight loss starts steamrolling in the right direction and you realize that you now have complete and total control of your weight. You can drive it to any body size you wish to drive it. It takes discipline, work, planning and dedication.....but YOU will be in control. It's an amazing process and one full of self discovery. It may feel a bit selfish now....when there are other problems in the mix....but trust & believe that taking a couple weeks to have the surgery and recover is absolutely going to show improvements in every single aspect of your life. Rock this surgery and rock your new self. Have fun and have no regrets.

JUST starting my journey. Soo anxious!
Dub replied to trailaur's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told to expect 7 months using my insurance to cover. All sorts of bullcrap was pulled by them. I wound up telling insurance company to kiss my ass and I self-funded after two months of supervised weight loss. I was sleeved a few weeks later. That is outstanding that you were able to get 100% coverage. -
Well done. Took my 17 year old and several of his friends to Carowinds two weeks ago. I was suckered into riding a beast of a rollercoaster with them. Scared my old arse to death. Crazy times, but fun times. I'm not into rollercoasters....at all......but I couldn't resist the urge to sit in the seat and buckle up and slam down the harness lock with vigor and fit in there just fine. The near 100 mph freefall a couple minutes later.............aw hell no.....never again, lol.

I tend to take a non-verbal approach with idiots like that. A deep breath.....inflated chest cavity.....cross my arms and give 'em a squinty eyed stare. A slight nod of the head back and forth is my clue to them not to push things further. Some don't get it though.....they thrive on being stupid. One....a younger upper manager at work (who's on the fast track for world domination with my employer)......kept on badgering me about my weight. The last time he did it was at the salad bar in our cafeteria. I had just finished a fast lunchtime workout in the gym and was grabbing a Protein loaded side salad from the bar. Minding my own bidness.....just trying to get what I needed.....grab and go. So he comes over and asks me, "Well, well, well.....look who we have here. Salad huh? So, guy, what are you up to now ? What's your weight up to now ?" He keeps on with this while getting my eggs and chicken chunks. I should add at this point that he's one of those pencil necked nerdy types who thinks that cross country running is the only fitness that matters. Again with the questions about my weight. I turn to him....lean over so nobody else can hear and say, "Why don't you ask your wife what I weigh, Michale.....she's felt all of it". Then I go back to my salad. He slammed his dayplanner down on the counter and made an odd noise with his throat and walked off. We have yet to speak again. A little more to the story is that this guy is on an unprecedented career trajectory.....My boss reports to the person that reports to this guy. His wife, who I've never met, is a saint of a woman. She's very active in their church and plays in the local symphony. They are puritans and live a clean life and are great family people. I probably should've handled the situation differently....but I'd enough of his badgering. Clearly he pursued the matter because I was asked by a member of HR about any "conversations" between us. I couldn't recall any real specifics and stuck with that. Seemed to satisfy them. I'm probably screwed, but I'll certainly not be bothered by his stupidity again.....at least not in the area of my weight.
