Personal Letter Requirement
I really don't understand why people are forced to jump through so many hoops for this surgery, people don't have to do this for other surgeries. Ridiculous.

Does it always take 6 months to get a date?
I went from first visit to surgery in 8 weeks. Could have been sooner but holidays and vacations delayed some of the pre-op testing.

Protein, Protein, Protein
My "tray" was decaf coffee, a protein shake, jello, and broth. I REALLY wanted to go home, I hate hospitals so I used all my determination to get it down. I think eating in the hospital is a good safety net to starting to consume, I wasn't scared because the nurses and doctors were there. I was only in the hospital about 26-28 hours. Once I proved I could get "food" down, I was released in 2 hours. That is the requirement to get out of the hospital and this is a bariatric center of excellence, with a very high volume of surgery. I had the whole protein shake, it was only 4 ounces, it was a small hospital one. I had 1/2 of the broth. 2 micro sips of coffee, and like 2 cubes of jello.

Can a Icee stretch your pouch
I kind of feel like we have to refute inaccurate information, because if we don't it looks accurate. There are so many people that lurk and read here. If we let BS stand it might harm some other new person, or worse scare someone for surgery. I'm pretty sure at this point she is just a troll that never even had WLS. The app makes these forums far too accessible to all kinds of random people.

Anyone morbidly obese and considering the gastric sleeve?
It depends on the Dr. My Dr only does the sleeve, no bypass. If you are young and active, you can lose a lot with the sleeve which is almost word for word what my doctor told me. He said they save the Bypass for older people who aren't going to be as active. I picked the sleeve because I felt it was the least invasive and traumatic. The lapband requires a foreign object in your body and constant Dr visits. Drs like the lapband because it is constant lifetime residual income for them. I am sure they can put a kid through college just on fills, or maybe get a nice boat. The Bypass involves touching the intestines. There are just too many things that can go wrong with that, and I wasn't willing to take the risk. I also didn't want to deal with a lifetime of malabsorption. It makes it too hard to take oral medications and keep your Vitamins up. I felt the sleeve was the perfect middle ground. I also knew if I really failed with the sleeve down the road, that I could always added the DS option (even though I probably wouldn't because of touching the intestines), but that option is there. The sleeve is safer for larger patients because it is faster than bypass. That is why on really large people they do the sleeve first with the option to revise to something else later. You don't have to let a Doctor pick your surgery for you. I went to a Dr that only did the sleeve, because I only wanted the sleeve. I had no interest in the Bypass. If you want a sleeve, then tell them you want a sleeve, if they won't do a sleeve find another Doctor. You have to live in your body, not the Doctor. They dice you up once and they are off to the next surgery.

Salad
Juicing is pretty awful, because you miss the fiber. I don't know why people still think juicing is the business when you are missing out on the best part of veggies.

I think straws are a great tool to get your Water down easily. The only issue with straws I see is that you can drink a lot quickly which early on can mean a little pain, if you don't want yourself. I accidentally used a straw once eating out, and once I didn't burst into flames and die, I realized it made drinking water so much easier. Sleevers for Straws, Unite!

Sleeved 5/4...
You really can't compare yourself to other people. You have no idea what they are doing to lose weight. A lot of people that post here have lost a lot in the first month but they were barely getting 500 calories a day. Slow and steady is just as good as losing fast.

Sleeved 5/4...
@@tonetone your Dr cleared you to lift weights at 1 week out? If you are creating that much of a calorie deficit every day, then you might be throwing your body into starvation mode.

Protein, Protein, Protein
I think I'm still stuck on... you got a whole shake down in an hour before you left the hospital!!? You rock! Lol Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App I had to finish most of my tray in the hospital before they would release me. Which included finishing a Protein shake. They don't want you to go home unable to eat and end up in the hospital for malnutrition.

Doc said weight loss plan was a waste of time. I need encouraged.
It is funny you say that. I have always been a swimmer, since I was young. When I got so fat that I floated so much it was hard to swim I switched to working out in the water. I always considered myself a water girl. Now that I have lost weight. I love walking. I am starting to hike. I am going to have a new bike very soon and start biking and I look forward to running but I want to lose a little more weight before I start, but I really WANT to run which is something I never thought I would say. It helps that I live in area where a lot of people run and there are lots of active people. When you lose more, your tastes in working out might change. My knew used to ache all the time from an old softball injury. Now I have no knee pain. When you lose and you don't have a lot of those aches and pains, you might surprise yourself what you want to do.

Doc said weight loss plan was a waste of time. I need encouraged.
I have lost all my weight from just walking 2-5 miles a day. I work out here and there, but not consistently (although that is about to change). If you are doing Aqua Zumba with a good instructor and really giving it your all, you will get hot as hell. Just because you are in the Water doesn't mean you won't sweat. There are all kinds of intense water exercises. Working out in the water is the hardest and you use all muscles because you have constant resistance because of the water, on forward and back motions. If you can find a place with it, AquaLogix is the best water workout you can get. https://www.aqualogixfitness.com/ Your Surgeon is an asshat. As long as you are moving for more than 30 minutes at a time, you will lose.

Weigh Your Food: It is accurate and will save you calories.
@@Babbs I have a cheap one from amazon, but it is the top seller, and it works great. http://amzn.com/B004164SRA I like it, for example I made a salad with afternoon. I put the bowl on reset to zero, added my greens, reset to zero. added my cheese. So I would weigh it all in one bowl. My dressing is zero calorie, so I didn't bother to weigh it. I use it multiple times a day and it is still functioning off the same batteries and I have had it almost a year.

If the icee was a soda one, the acid in it might have affected your stomach and that is why you feel hungry. Are you on a PPI?

Weigh Your Food: It is accurate and will save you calories.
When you are watching calories and macros, portions are really important. I have a scale and weigh my food. I was weighing mostly just my meat, and using measuring cups or going by the package for weights (like one preset portion weighs X). I recently started weighing everything because I discovered that most measurements we were off. This video explains it better than words. Putting measuring cups and spoons on my scale and zeroing it out, I have discovered that most of the time a level amount is more than it should be. So weighing allows me to get the amounts exact. Not weighing your food can mean easily going over your calories by 200 or more in a day, depending on what you are eating. Here is a reddit thread with some examples of how the calories add up https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/comments/44y2d5/the_importance_of_weighing_your_food/

Salad
I get zero restriction on salad. I read Dr Matthew Weiner's book Pound of Cure, and I am trying to incorporate more veggies in my diet. I have 3 ounces of spinach with a Walden Farms dressing most afternoons as my snack. The only way I can get veggies in, is to eat them separate from my Protein, since once I eat my protein I have no room left for anything else. A salad makes the perfect snack for me. I wouldn't have been able to have an afternoon salad and meet my protein goals before the 6 month mark.

Week 3 and 4 food options
Tuna can be dry and hard process early on. Same with salmon and crab. A soft baked fish would be baked swai, cod, tilapia. You want to bake a white fish so it is soft and moist. I ate swai most of the time. It is affordable at Walmart. Below is a recipe for it. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/348954-baked-swai-fillet/

Old Timers-What is the point of WLS if many regain/have hunger/diet drama..
I am not an old timer but the way surgery helps if you follow the plan is, you learn to eat again like a baby. It gives you a chance to start over and teach yourself to eat health. Learning to eat like this is easy after surgery. It is all, mapped out for you. When you haven't had solid food in weeks, a bite of baked fish tastes like heaven. Now baked fish is your new fav. This is totally a mental game. The hunger most people battle is head hunger. Once you heal you can eat almost anything, the fear and anxiety of eating something that will make you sick lessens. Yes hunger comes bsck but the level of hunger from a tiny tummy compared to a normal one is like comparing a kitten to a Lion. There are some other issues like a lot of people confuse acid or digestion in their intestines with hunger. If you eat 4-6 small meals a day it is basically impossible to be hungry. This is how eating Protein every time you eat and having a high protein goal helps. Why not just save your own money while working on you food issues instead of borrowing from your dad. That seems like hel, having to justify your life choices. I know someone who had bypass and is 3.5 years out from surgery. They have regained and can't get it off because they never learned to eat right and didn't follow their plan. They followed a fad diet plan and now they are lost and unable to make a change.
