  1. I have BCBS in NC. The process is lengthy. Just make sure you have Letter of Medical Necessity from PCP with documented 4 year weight loss history, along with weight loss programs you have tried and the results. That has been the most cumbersome part of my journey. I never documented anything I did on my own in detail. I had to get my records from different doctors, and have one doctor combine everything on one letter. I still don't know if I am approved or not.

  2. I have BCBS. Besides all the pre-screening appts - abdominal ultrasound, sleep study, upper GI, EKG, chest xray, psychological evaluation, pulmonary, nurtitionist, I also had to have 4 years of weight, and weight loss programs documented and sent in by my PCP. I also had to write a letter stating why I wanted the surgery. I started this process in February. The paperwork was submitted to BCBS today 7/10th. My surgeon schedules 6 weeks out based on approval date.

  3. The psychological visit I had told me that the hardest thing to deal with would be people telling me I was "taking the easy way out". He said that couldn't be further from the truth. I don't tell too many people for that very reason. Unless I deal with someone on a day to day basis, like my immediate family or an extremely close friend, I don't say anything to anyone. It's none of their business. I understand this person who said this to you may be a close friend. Sometimes people say things because they feel threatened in some way. She may be afraid that the dynamics of your friendship might change after your surgery.

  4. I thought my surgeon's office submitted my paperwork to insurance company for final approval last week. I called yesterday to check status. The coordinator hadn't even sent it yet! Failed to mention they needed a letter from me stating why I wanted surgery, and also a letter from my PCP as to why I should have surgery. They NEVER told me those requirements 2 months ago. Geeeeesh.
