Do you ever walk through the grocery store and get a glance of yourself or walk through town and catch a sideways look in the windows and cringe? Happens so often to me and often I realize that the image I cringed over wasn't even me! LOL Looking forward to the days when I don't want to miss seeing myself in those damn mirrors!

Travel Home from Mexico
Shustar replied to BigHarleyGuy1's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I drove home from San Diego after my surgery in TJ. It was a six hour drive and I had no problems at all. No pain and no drowsiness. I was a bit tired after I got home but went to work the next day. I'm 62 years old! -
First, you should always discuss these issues with your NUT. I was sleeved on June 8th, just ahead of you. I am eating 3 oz of soft meats such as chiken salad, baked ricotta, and baked fish. It is a learning experience. One bite too many and it;s trouble!

What a marvelous feeling as well as achievement. You are well over half way home!

Welcome aboard you (soon to be) thin and trim guy! I too, love it here. Keeps my eye on my goal and answers most if not all of my questions and concerns just by reading on a daily basis. Welcome hoe!

Post sleeved Group Question
Shustar replied to AJ cowgirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I was sleeved on June 8. No problems whatsoever. It was easy to get water and protein in. I got scared that they didn't make my stomach small enough. When I started pureed foods this past week, I was flaborgasted at how little my stomach actually holds now. Got sick several times because I just did not believe. I'm a thrilled believer now! -
I found mixing 1 1/2 scoops of unflavored (Biochem) protein n=in 24 ox water with 2 indvidual packs of Crystal Light with a few ice cubes in my water bottle bottle gives me protein and water at the same time. My sleeve does well with this consitency.

I actually found this phase exciting because it was the beginning of a dream opportunity coming true! It is also easy since you don't have to think too much about what to have. i guess at my age (62) I am just so ready to have a tool which will allow me to reach and maintain a healthy goal and longer healthy life. -

how have your exercise habits changed?
Shustar replied to brr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You will be amazed at the difference your weight loss makes. Tomorrow is my 4 week anniversary and it is night and day when I play tennis. Have you tried the Brooks Ariel or New Balance 1340? A strong motion control shoe with good shock absorbtion can help. You may need a different type of custom orthotic. There are many types and methods of creating customs. Best of luck! -
how have your exercise habits changed?
Shustar replied to brr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a CPED (Certified Pedorthist) which is like being a pharmacist for an Orthopedic Surgeon or Podiatrist. Every pound of body weight translates to 3-7 pounds of pressure per square inch on the foot. If you weight 200 pounds, that is about 1000 pounds per square inch for your feet. Any misbehavior of the feet can cause pain in the rest of your skeletal system such as ankle, knee, hip and back. Our excess weight stretches the muscles and ligaments that support the 3 arches of the foot. When you think about it, it is amazing we are able to walk at all! We all need to wear the proper equipment when we start to walk/run or any exercise routine. Shin splints are chiefly caused by over-pronation of the foot putting too much stress on the long muscle (tibialis) next to the shin bone (tibia). The pulling on this muscle causes micro-tears which causes the pain. I would strongly recommend a high quality over the counter arch support and an appropriate running shoe. I prefer running shoes even if you are a walker as they are constructed to handle the extra stress running places on the foot. Make sure you are fitted correctly, this is not apparel, it is your health and wellness equipment! When you buy a new pair, make sure to write the date of purchase underneath the insole/arch support. Your running shoes must be replaced every 4-600 miles! Doesn't matter how much you paid for the shoes, the soles (not the tread) will start compressing and exaggerate your foot's bad habits. Now get going! -
Do you weigh yourself daily or weekly?
Shustar replied to gwenbfine's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Heck no! You are doing great! If you stay on this forum very much, you will see the dreaded "3 week stall" talked about daily. I hit it at 2 weeks, others at 4 or 5 weeks. Just part of the process. I am a daily weigher but I will not allow the scales to dictate my day. Many suggest weighing yourself weekly. Just be sure you are getting your required amounts of protein and water and you will see the scales moving in the right direction before too long. Frustrating - yes! Lesson in patience and discipline - Yes! Just keep up your great work! -
Getting sleeved was the easiest part of my journey so far. I had an easy recovery with the usual gas pains and tenderness. Of all the surgeries I have had (Knee replacement, breast reduction, ovarian cancer, etc.) this was by far the easiest. I am almost 4 weeks out and learning how to eat much smaller protein servings much slower. Sounds easy, right. Amazing how little will absolutely fill me up! Learning how to be the new improved but slightly modified me - priceless!

Got my sleeve at 62 years old on June 8th. I am down 24 pounds and ALL pain on the tennis court is gone! I think of putting a backpack with 2 10 pound bags of sugar and a five pounder and trying to run and play. 1 month and what a difference already! Love it!

125 pounds lost (pictures)

Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring us! Your before pics look like they should be your mother! Hard to believe how many years you have lost as well as how your body has changed! Major kudos! -
I went to Mexico by myself, driving 6 hours from Arizona. My husband wanted to come but he has severe chronic pain and I did not want to worry about him. It was BY FAR the easiest surgery I have ever had! For others who have not had much experience with surgery, I can understand how hard the discomforts immediately after surgery are. I don't discount that but also know how temporary they are for the vast majority of us! I had no problems driving myself home after surgery but we were in the hospital 2 nights and in a medical floor of a beautiful hotel for 2 more nights which is longer than most US hospitals. Like the Uber idea. Go for it! You will be fine but not alone as you have all of us!

I am still new to my sleeve - almost four weeks old. I really like these posts about appropriate calories. My nut is more focused on getting in 90-100g protein and 70-80 oz water. Because most "diets" are based on calories as well as high protein/low carb etc. they are built on a temporary change in eating habits which is why diets have never provided a long term solution for me. I watch you Senior Sleevers like a hawk! It appears (to me) that the ones who work on a program that will not vary to much when goal is achieved are the most successful. Getting to goal sooner is wonderful and based on lots of individual factors but staying at goal is the ultimate goal and challenge. It seems like those who took a slightly longer road to goal have had an easier time maintaining it at a higher caloric rate. Thank you Senior Sleevers for taking the time and energy to keep supporting us junior sleevers...especially with all the repetition of questions and issues! You have the patience of a saint!

Former smokers. where ya at?
Shustar replied to kbingo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@kbingo@kbingo Actually, you can get juice for your vape with no nicotine. Most of the flavors where I got mine do not have nicotine. Just a thought. Just helps to have something in your hand that looks and feels a bit like a cigarette. -
Former smokers. where ya at?
Shustar replied to kbingo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit last September after 42 years of smoking. It was before I considered WLS. Whe I quit I ended up in a nasty law suit with a former employee I fired. Between the smoking and the law suit I watched myself blow up by 40 pounds after keeping about 60 pounds off from HCG diet for 3 years. I used a vape for the first month or so. I rarely think about smoking now and never crave it. So glad to have it out of my like. As a rebellious and defiant personality, I get a bit of pleasure doing what others tell me I shouldn't do. -
@@Inner Surfer Girl My mom still plays 2-3 times per week and she is 85. She is also a dinky size 4. Not sure I even like her! LOL
