    Happy

Great job! It must feel so liberating not relying on your cane for short distance walking. Imagine what it'll be like when you don't need it at all??
  2. What a great tip to walk when the commercials come on!! It's pretty nice here in NY - and we have 3 dogs - so waling them 3x's a day will get me in another 3 miles.
  3. Hey April. I'm Lisa. Also having surgery Nov 9th - in NYC. Started my 2-week liquid diet today. For Breakfast, I had 1c almond milk, 15 ice cubes, 2TBSP PB2 powder, 1/2 banana and 1 packet of unjury chocolate Protein powder -- blended into a smoothie. I've actually been having these daily for about 5 weeks now. My pre-surgery diet is full liquids - I know some others get to have a light meal on theirs. I made a worksheet last night with my day's dietary plan (2 Unjury shakes, 1 Premier Protein shake, a yogurt and sugar free Jello for snacks). A written plan works best for me so it's all ironed out before my day starts. Just need to remind myself to drink Water. Never been a big water drinker, but I'll learn. Good luck!!

    Defining "normal" weight and BMI

My daughter is a competitive dancer - 20+ hours/week. I know all to well what you're talking about and the industry puts forth so much pressure on image. I was also a gymnast until I turned 20. My daughter's pediatrician actually hid the BMI charts in their exam rooms because the only patients who were a slave to it were the athletes -- and it really doesn't pertain to them. I cannot imagine at 135 with an athletic build and muscle mass that you'd be anywhere near "heavy". I know you've been told all your life that muscle weighs more than fat. Take heed to that. My NUT asked my goal weight. I said 150. I'm 5'4". She ran some tests and said I should think more towards 175 because of my high muscle mass. I was stunned. But my 175 could very well be comparable to someone without as much muscle mass being 150. I've decided to rely more on inches than lbs. At least that's my plan of attack.
  5. how fortunate are we that BCBS is so responsive!!!
  6. My BMI is in the 40's... I'm sure it'll show up on the left when I post this. I'm down to around 250. liquid diet starts tomorrow. I hope to lose another 5-10 lbs. before surgery on the 9th. This is suddenly becoming so real. I feel for those that self-pay. The monetary cost is crazy - but the benefits will be worth SO MUCH MORE!! We are extremely fortunate to have a police/government insurance plan that covers it 100%.
  7. My paperwork from my NUT says fat free cream Soups. Couldn't find any of those in local stores, but found 98% fat free regular soups. Looking online, other than the fat content, it appears the non-creamed soups are similar to creamed ones. What's the reason creamed soups are stressed? I cannot eat many of them (food allergies) - but found a non-cream one I can tolerate. Any insight is greatly appreciated. I start my 2 week liquid diet on Monday. Thanks!
  8. Thanks! I left a message for her. ????
  9. I have BCBS in NY (government). I was approved within a week after meeting all of my requirements. Good luck.

    Making use of the now

I don't. I'll pick one up though. I weigh daily now for the same reasons you do - to be my reality check. My fear is that I'll obsess over the numbers too much post-surgery.

    Making use of the now

I'm sure I speak for many others just starting this journey -- the veterans, the success stories, the honesty about the struggles and the support to help everyone succeed is what keeps us motivated. So thank you. I'm excited for the day when I can be an inspiration to someone just starting out.

    Making use of the now

Delays suck - but great for you to make the best of it! I also believe holding yourself accountable teaches you to make better choices. My surgery was rescheduled from 9/24 to 11/9 because I was riddled with ulcers. I was already a week into my liquid diet. So instead of going back to my pre-liquid eating habits, I keep to 2 Protein shakes a day and one meal. I didn't want to put on more weight that I would just have to lose again just because my date was delayed. Such a psychological process. I have to start tracking calories/nutritional intake. And I'm getting a FitBit next week. I can honestly say that food doesn't really taste good to me. Not sure if it's due to my erosive gastritis or because I'm not eating sweets. I'm allergic to raw fruits & vegetables - which puts another kink into the equation. I've stopped soda - it's been 5 weeks. I drank 1-2 20oz bottles of Pepsi or Cream soda daily. I don't really miss it - maybe twice in 5 weeks. But I think that's because I just didn't feel like Water. And we own a cake company. I make it a point to NEVER sample the frostings/cakes. That's what my husband is in charge of. I have plenty of small containers - 2oz ones that will soon be everywhere, I'm sure. I'm afraid of becoming a slave to the scale. I was an athlete into college. Though fat, I'm still muscular. My head wants the numbers to go down really low. But I know that I have a lot of muscle mass that may keep them higher than I want - but I know the inches gone will mean more. I told my husband that we'll need to put the scale in a locked closet and only weigh once a week. We'll see how that goes. Currently, I weigh every day. I should put it away now, huh?
  13. Good luck to you. I can only imagine how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis is. Keep up the good fight! And keep us posted.

    Dating post-surgery?

How about Movies, a museum, Paint Nite, Comedy show, etc.
  15. Mine is November 9th. I start my pre-op diet on Monday. I was originally scheduled for 9/24 but was full of ulcers so it was postponed. However, I have tried to stick to a 2-shake diet per day with one sensible meal. I wanted to be as prepared as possible for my full liquids diet starting Monday. My surgery is in NYC. I'm so excited!!
  16. I know many say not to chew gum because you may swallow it, but does your doc allow you to chew gum? When I get bored at work, I chew gum and it helps tremendously.

    Had surgery yesterday

    Glad you're home!!
  18. I've always been a snacker at work because I tend to get involved in a project and not leave my desk for most of the day. Since my modified diet (before my surgery was postponed), I cut out all candy. After the first 2 days, I didn't even miss it. I have a jar on my desk for others that I don't even notice anymore. I bought bags of everything for the Trick or Treaters. If I can have the willpower now, I'm hoping to still have it next week. I'll bring in the extras to work and fill my jar. Or have our kids keep what they want and bring the rest to work. I try to to think about the candy. If you think about it, you'll want it.

    Unjury Protein

I could not for the life of me figure out why they had a chicken soup flavored one. Lol. I ordered the sample pack so that I could try it and see how I like it... Because I've got to find one that is tolerable. Does it get very frothy? I heat my Water and bring it to the 130-135 degrees. Then I stir in the chicken soup Protein powder. It doesn't get frothy at all. Maybe because I stir it and don't shake it.

    Unjury Protein

I use unjury - and like it. I mix it with Almond Milk, ice cubes, PB2 and a banana. I like both the vanilla and the chocolate. I also have the Soup - which reminds me of Ramen broth - but you can't heat it too hot or the Protein will get sticky.
  23. I was on the fence about telling anyone - I told my mom. She told her ENTIRE church group and family. Thanks Mom. At work, I told my boss because a co-worker just went through the same surgery. However, my EGD results yielded erosive gastritis - and I've been pretty sick every single day for the past month. He's well aware how ill I am - so I've told him the surgery is medically necessary (which insurance agrees it is) - and leave it at that. Quite a few coworkers see me sick every day - they know the issue with the erosive gastritis. I doubt anyone will question it here. After the surgery, I don't have a problem telling them I had surgery -- they will assume it was due to my stomach issues. And technically, isn't it? I shouldn't have mentioned a word to anyone but my husband. But too late. I've only told 2 of our 6 kids. The others will notice when they're home. They also know my recent sickness - so they'll assume that too. I think it absolutely sucks that your supervisor was so shitty to you. Karma's a bitch.
