I am an athletics coach at a local High School, all of my co-workers and athletes are men or teenagers. I have coached with these guys for 7 years and for all the years until this last October I weighed north of 375 lbs and as high as 397lbs. I coach the offensive line for the football team and looked the part. Now that I am 140lbs lighter they bust my balls all in fun (because that is what we do) keep saying that I am too small to be a line coach and I now look like a wide reciever and need to coach that position. Everybody I associate with is very positive and supportive in my path to being more healthy and give me nothing but positive feedback on my success. We spend a lot of time together on and off the field and they see the real struggle that I have dealt with prior to my surgery and the success I have had since. Surround yourself with a circle that is positive, uplifting and supportive. Ignore the ignorant comments made by uneducated people. They are not worth your time or energy. When you stress over what they say you just give them free rent and space inside your head. Good luck with the co-workers and if all else fails remember today is "Throat Punch Thursday"!

Don't drink soda, it's bad mmmkay!
Seriously soda or any "sparkling drinks" are not recommended to drink post-op. The carbonation will fill you sleeve and will take away room from valuable nutrition, also it could cause your sleeve to stretch. There will be some on here that still indulge in them but as a rule you should stay away from carbonation for at least a year if not more.

I have always loved the gym (former football/baseball player) even when I was big after my playing days I loved lifting weights! When I lost weight and got in shape to join the Army I was a 7 day a week exerciser! 6 days of P90X and also running or lifting weights on top of the P90X! I was bench pressing over 400lbs and my squats were in the high 400s as well! I Joined the Army weighing 272 but was at 14% body fat, after my injury I was not able to lift any more because of the pain, which caused me to gain 125 lbs! Since my surgery I have lost that 125 and then some, I go to the gym 3 days a week and work out with my baseball players I coach! They hate when they get punished and I do the exercises with then b/c they know they are working till I get tired!
I can't lift as much as I used to but I feel the strength coming back fast! The difference in the gym now is I see my muscle tone developing whereas before I would just get "big", so, that just motivates me more.
This is all to myself better but it is also pretty awesome that my wife can't stop rubbing my chest and arms. When we are out I know another female is has been "caught" checking me out b/c the wife has a big grin on her face and snuggles a little tighter.

As far as really drinking too much Water, I talked to my NUT he said there is no upper limit if you are exercising and sweating a lot drink as much as you need.
I heard about that, that was just stupid on everybody involved. When I was in the Army on training days it was not unusual for me to drink 6 or more gallons of Water a day, but, I was sweating my ass off in southern Georgia in the Summer. So heat and humidity play a big part of how much you should drink as well.

So today it was 95 degrees where I live. Before surgery when I was out in the heat I would chug Water, but, now I can only sip. But, still managed to down 1 1/2g of liquids today.
Soy silly question is we are supposed to get at least 64oz in a day is there a too much point?

Can you talk with your dietician about this? They may have a great solution for you. I'm wondering if you're getting in enough food-wise to accommodate your activity level. Do you take B12? You may want to get that level checked. Also, have you had you thyroid checked? One of the big symptoms for hypothyroidism is lack of energy. Might want to check it out. Good luck to you!

I have been in the gym since 6 weeks out (I am now 6 months out). In the beginning it was slow and could only do a little bit both on the cardio machines as well as the weights. Now I am in the gym for 1 1/2-2 hours 30 min cardio the rest of the time on free weights and a few machines. What is exciting is every time I go I PR on my run times. I typically run on the elliptical for about 20 min and right now I go 21/2 miles in that time. I try to stay above 9mph which equates to around a 7 min and change mile pace. Then my weight training is focused on muscle building and explosive strength. Good luck to you and keep up the hard work, but, listen to your body and don't overdo it too quickly!

KingMoose got a reaction from tomi71 in Please explain protein for weight loss to me
Resistance training is the key to building lean muscle! Plus it boosts you metabolism long after you workout is over. I hear way to many talk about how hey are losing muscle because of the rapid weight loss. That is mainly because they are doing mainly or mostly aerobic style workouts. If you add a strength training regime to your workouts you might see sell depletion of lean muscle. I am not saying running, swimming, hiking... is bad but if that is all you are doing you are not working your muscles to their potential and they will not retain the same mass or strength. I do agree that with age muscle mass naturally lessens. But with a good training schedule with both strength and cardio mix these problems will be less noticable.
With the restrictions on calories and nutrients we consume everyday we are naturally in a negative balance and our bodies are looking for fuel. I would much rather my body consume my excess body fat than feed on my muscle to get it's fuel. Therefore lifting weights either high weight/low reps or low weight/high reps keeping my muscles active and keeping my metabolism high will help me achieve that.
