Remember BMI is not always acurate. Anybody that has muscle mass will be considered obese. The Rock is 6'5" 260+lbs which makes his BMI roughly 31, I don't think anyone will think he is obese! Bmi is not the number you should concentrate on, what is more important is body fat. Also look at how the ratio of body fat to muscle mass equates.

    Hundred pound weight loss

Congrats on the 100lbs lost! S uch an amazing feeling to get healthy and be able to take charge our lives again! @@BLERDgirl I have one the same pair of shorts and shirt that I wore home from the hospital for the same thing. I took a pic with my nurse who is 4'11" and I am 6'3" when I got discharged, and took a pic when I hit 100lbs lost. The clothes are sooooo big on me it is funny.

October 2014 sleevers check in please!

Thank you! I told my surgeon I was going to be the poster child for the hospital. I had my surgery through the VA in Long Beach, Ca. I was the second pt to have the surgery there. Prior the had to go to another VA hospital for the surgery but all pre and post care was done at the VA IN LB. My Surgeon had been lobbying for years to have the ability to do it all out of one hospital. So after all of the red tape was cut I was pt #2 of the facility. So since my mouth wrote such a big check my body has to fund that check, so my accountability is very high and I do not want to disappoint myself or anybody else.

Ugh! I'm in the "What If" Stage... Grrr

That is a legitimate fear, but, overwhelmingly that will not be the case. Most people recover fairly quickly from surgery and are back to normal activities within a few days to a couple of weeks. Look at the bigger what if. If you don't have the surgery and continue down the path that lead you to where you are at now. Will your quality of life be better or worse, will your lifestyle choices make you healthier or sicker, in severe cases will the what if I don't have the surgery lead to an early grave? We all have had these fears that is why we made the choice to have the surgery to get healthy and to live longer better lives. There are so many things in our lives have a what if factor, that is why you do a pro/con list and weigh our options and make an educated choice to do what is best for us. You will do fine statistically your chances of things going sideways are so low. Just make sure you follow the Dr's and Nutritionist's orders and follow your post-op bible you will be successful. Stay positive and things will work out. Good luck!

October 2014 sleevers check in please!

I had my VSG surgery on 24 October. My pre-six month diet starting weight was 397, surgery day was 363, today 14 April I am at 259! My surgeon and I agree on a goal weight of between 230-240 I am 6'3" and have a large muscular frame (former football player and infantryman Soldier). Starting body fat percentage 45% last week I was at 23%. I have had practically no problems medically, just learning curves. I work out multiple times a week and coach HS football and baseball everyday and am very active with my athletes as well as playing with my young sons. This is the best decision I could have made for myself and my family. I am so pleased with my results and getting my lifestyle back on track.

    Frustrated! Need advice...

Agreed! As counterintuitive as is sounds if you eat a little more (especially if you are workingout) will boost you weight loss and your metabolism, to burn more calories long after you are done with said workout. Your body is very complex, if you are working hard and not giving it enough fuel it will not work properly and go into starvation mode and hold on to everything to keep it running. You can not get a sports car to run if you do not have gas!

    Serious Stall

I still do not do salads, not enough nutrition but the little bit on the sandwich is ok. Or the little I eat at dinner (2-3 bites) I had grilled asparagus with dinner last night and today a little interesting. but for the most part I am ok. You could put cucumbers in your water.

    Serious Stall

I grew up on veggies, I refuse to let them bother me. Hahaha I do notice a difference in my #2 but not bad and my stomach is ok as long as I do not over do it and take it real slow. It takes about 45 min or more to eat a 6" sub.

    Enough of big stuff

We are all here to help bc we have all been there. Good luck to you. You will do great! Just stay positive even when things go sideways. Remember this is a tool not a magic pill. A hammer cannot build a house without you using it.

    Memorial Day Challenge!

@@vsgSarah3 That is a lot of walking but it does look like you are not getting enough food in. You body is probably in starvation mode, so it is holding on to everything. You should try to up your intake focusing on clean proteins and up your fluid intake. I always have beef jerky or protein bars on hand just in case. Each meal you should have a couple oz of a clean protein source and a veggie of some sort. Also snacks try to have a Greek yogurt or your shake (I unlike most love my protein shakes). Hydration has a lot to do with the efforts as well. 64oz seems like a lot but if broken down into several smaller servings it goes by pretty quickly. Since I work outside I drink way more than my 64oz. But, it is not all water. I have crystal light, Arnold Palmers w/ light lemonade and unsweetened tea... but any caffine I consume I drink that many more ounces of liquids to counter the effects of the caffine. If things still don't happen after a few days of following your post op bible call your nutritionist to see what they think. Good luck to you and hope things ramp up for you.

    Cravings

The only thing I crave is In n Out. But, when I go with the family I can't eat is bc the smell alone makes me nauseous.

    Serious Stall

I drink a protein shake in the morning (after my coffee) after the gym I have a protein bar. Then lunch is where I have my carbs, normally a subway chicken or turkey sandwich with all the veggies. During the afternoon I snack on sunflower seeds (I know the salt is bad but I am a HS football and baseball coach so I am very active and in the sun a lot so I need the little bit of salt to keep from dehydration and cramps) dinner is some sort of clean protein and veggies. Late night snack is usually a piece or two of beef jerky. All day long I am drinking water and crystal light roughly 80oz total. Plus if I want sweet I have a sf popcicle

    Enough of big stuff

I am 38, and was the same way I would drop a lot of weight with fad diets then gain even more back. In 2011 I was in great shape joined the Army as an Infantryman, but got injured during training and was discharged from the Army. During my recovery from my injury I gained 120+ lbs which only exasperated my injury to my back and legs. I was barely able to do normal daily activities. A year ago December I was the heaviest I ever weighed at 397 I said enough is enough and went to start the process to have my VSG. October 24 2014 I had my surgery, I am now back down to below I weighed while in the Army. My current weight is 261 and my life is back to normal. My energy is through the roof, I am active all day long with no pain. My marriage is better my ability to do things with the kids is better. Everything is back to where it was prior to my injury. If I had to do this again I would do it in a heartbeat! Good luck to you, you will do great as long as you stick to your post-op bible.

Would you have WLS again? What kind?

If I could turn back the clock I would have never let myself get in to the position I did to have to use the surgery as a tool to lose weight. I was like probably a lot of you in very good shape in my teens, then got out of high school stopped playing sports then life got in the way of the active lifestyle. But since all of that did happen yes I would do it over again! I am using food as fuel again instead of o coping mechanism. Funny thing is is now that I have had it done I now find the time to do the things I thought life got in the way of doing. I go to the gym multiple times a week, go for walks and just stay active. Plus I am a full time student work and raise my family and am an attentive husband to my amazing wife who supports me whole heartedly. But is now starting to have insecurities about her weight issues.

    Weight-lifting

So I am a younger male, I have always loved lifting weights and have always been very strong. Since my surgery I have been lifting again (not nearly as heavy as I used too) I have increased my cardio portion of my workout. But, just wondering if any of you still lift hard and heavy and if you have had any problems with this or have you noticed any successes since your surgert.

    toning/firming

I started weight-training 6 weeks post op. I have worked up to 2.5 miles on the elliptical machine at an 8 mile a minute pace, plus 45 minutes of weight training and 10 min of core training. Outside of the gym I walk 3 plus miles a day and am a HS football and baseball coach and am very active with my athletes and my children at home. Plus we are getting ready to move so I am packing and moving boxes everyday as well.

    Memorial Day Challenge!

Sure I am in! My goal is 250lbs. My weight loss in lbs has slowed due to my weight lifting but I am dropping body fat still. So I will say 250 or 20% body fat. I am at 26% right now. Oh my weight right now is 260
  25. I am 6 months out and sometimes still have a hard time getting 1000 cal in a day.
