Hi, I just had my surgery 10/20 and I can say that as far as my asthma goes, things were pretty easy. I needed oxygen while in the hospital but it was no big deal, they just hooked me up and kept checking my levels.

Just take a deep breath. Both you and your family are going to be fine. And always remember that you're doing this to be healthy, so you'll live longer, and can be around when your kids have kids. You'll do fine. ????

No need to be nervous! The fact that you have studied AT ALL for life after surgery probably puts you ahead of 90% of the people who have this procedure done. You will be fine.
As for the pain, I won't lie, it hurt! I was in more pain post-op than I thought I would be. I guess I even had a few choice words for some nurses about how I felt when I woke up, though I don't remember that, (they told me about it later, and fortunately thought it was funny!). However, that all passed quickly. It's all just a distant memory as I come up on one year post-op, and all completely worth it!
As for the kids, they will be fine! Your MIL managed to raise your husband, and I assume he turned out okay. Besides, staying with grandma is all about staying up too late, eating the wrong things at the wrong times and just generally not doing what you are supposed to when you are supposed to do it, otherwise no kids would agree to it! Besides, kids are resilient. They will recover from this ordeal quicker than you. No worries!
Really, just concentrate on following your doctor's advice. Everything else will fall into place. You have got this! Best of luck!

I have had asthma for over twenty years. I had no issues with it last year when I had surgery last year. That being said I also have not seen a large difference afterlosing weight. I don't huff and puff as much, but still have t use a daily inhaler. On the other hand my sleep apnea seems to be gone.

amalie1684 reacted to BairwithMe in Surgery Monday 10/19- new beginnings
Hi all- well it is finally here. My surgery is on Monday 10/19. Last night was my LAST Monday for everything Pre-surgery. If that makes sense. The last Monday I get to exercise in Jazzercise. (for a while-I just started going a month ago and love it) the last Monday night I will sleep in my bed with the same stomach. Last Monday my body will be this same condition it is in. I had a mani and pedi this past weekend with my girlfriends and had to have all my nail polish off-one of the restrictions for me is that we cant have fingernail polish on for the surgery? I have been feeling like I am nesting. Cleaning my house. getting last minute things taken care of. Shopping for broth and puddings and cream Soup. Getting my Vitamins all ready to go in a mediset for the right times.Writing down on my calendar what days to do what phase of the food plan after surgery-starting with broth and popsicles- then moving on to pudding and strained soups-bought some loose pajama shorts and tops to wear- slippers for the hospital safe ones with grips on the bottom to push IV pole. charging up my kindle fire-I will probably be out of it and wont even read. who knows. Anyone else feeling this? or felt this as the days close in ? I am excited and nervous. I haven't told anyone except my husband what is going on. He supports me totally. I know I am blessed that way. I just don't want to be judged by other people that I am taking the easy way out. As we all know on here this is not the easy way. I have had colon cancer and breast cancer. and I have survived. I lost my 20 yr old son two years ago to leukemia even though he was in remission.I got breast cancer six months after he passed. and if none of that killed me then I am doubting this will. I do feel like I am here for a purpose. We are here for each other on this earth. You are me and I am you. Our struggles and challenges all look different.but Everyone we meet has been hurt in some way and struggles with something. Any other advice about pre-surgery things? All the people here are so positive and upbeat. Thank you so much!!

So this morning I had an appointment with my pulmonary doctor to get the clearance I need before insurance approval and it was a very special experience for me. I've been wrestling with whether or not I wanted the sleeve but recently went full steam ahead after a lot of realizations and support from my family. When I saw the nurse in the beginning I told her what I was there for and when I told her who my surgeon was she had great things to say about him. Then, when the doctor came in and I said what I was there for he said "Congratulations!" And I was so happy and thankful for his reaction because no one had "congratulated" me about it before. It made me think about how it really is a celebratory time of making a decision and commitment to putting myself first. Not only did I start my road to pulmonary clearance but I also got some great validation and inspiration as well. This journey gets more exciting every day!

In Jan. 2011 I stood in a winter storm in Missouri. Hidden under a little green tent with the sweet smell of flowers and tears rolling from my eyes. I buried my 46 yr old brother due to comorbitities of super morbid obessity. I promised that day I would change my life and try to help my family do the same. I was "the small one" in a family of over eaters with thyroid, hormone and a plethora of other issues that would sabatoge any attempt to lose weight, and forget maintaining! I was depressed, stressed, and hating life. Thank God for my husband, children, and best friend. I roller coastered with my weight, no permanent loss was sustained. That's the way it had been my whole life.
I had a coworker tell me that she heard our insurance had changed and she thought it would cover WLS. So off I went, and in a hurry! Mar 5, 2014 was my first appt, Mar 26, I was in surgery. I had no complications as of today.
A few things I learned along the way......
    1. Stick with the plan, always stick with the plan
    2. Hydrate
    3. Don't be scared to try new things (Tofu, Shirataki noodles, trampolines, sky diving)
    4. Be prepared, even if you are just going out for a few hours, have some go to Snacks with you in case you get delayed
    5. Know where you can eat out at and stay on plan, or don't go out to eat. Big one for me due to work travel
    6. Celebrate NSVs
    7. Smooth Moves by the case is more economical, EBay lowest price I have found
    8. When you cook, cook enough for several meals and freeze in one meal containers for later (I do a lot of soups)
    9. You will stall, it's inevitable, STICK WITH THE PLAN
    10. Take pics and journal, as your body and mind changes you will understand
    11. Realize your hair will grow back, take Biotin, find a good Shampoo and conditioner, get a shorter haircut, wear a hat
    12. Plan what you are going to do with the extra years you are adding to your life from losing weight and burdens associated
I'm not done, but getting close to maintenance and realizing I CAN DO THIS!
Attached are a few pics: my progression in pics, my WL data, and my staples

Hello all new here to the site and the sleeve. I was at the doc for a yearly check up and he brought up wls to me and I immediately said no way but when I got home I started reading and reading, I even read the big book on the gastric sleeve. Now I am going back to the doc this month for my test results and to ask for a referral to see a bariatric doctor. What are some questions you recommend asking the bariatric doctor on the first visit?
