    Identity crisis?

I've lost just over 100 lbs in about 6 years and surprisingly my agoraphobia has reared its ugly head. I'm just 10 lbs over my goal. I don't enjoy leaving the house because interactions with men are very uncomfortable for me. I still view me as the old me and I get chatted up constantly. I was groped twice at the grocery store.

Veterans ONLY please. One year + post op.

I'm nearly 6 years out, 18+ months seems fitting.
  3. I'll be 6 years out in November. I will say, with the exception of the first 3 months or so I have continued to drink carbonated beverages (sparkling water and diet soda) despite all the warnings I received.
  4. I watch this show weekly, on TLC, but I am baffled that a great number of these folks are able to maintain their weight despite having surgery. I realize bad eating habits and enabling by family members, since many of these patients aren't mobile and are dependent on others for food, are big issues. And the immobility means they are likely getting no exercise, which doesn't help. There was one girl, earlier in the season who lost only 5 lbs. during her yr. long weight loss journey, and these were the 5 lbs. she lost during the pre-op inhospital diet. So sad. I really feel for these people. Your thoughts?

Can I have an scramble egg

I had surgery 4.25 years ago and eggs, in any form, make me barf about 70% of the time. I can sometimes deal with hard boiled in a salad or put in a sandwich.

    Carbonated beverages

I drink diet soda, seltzer water, and everything else carbonated and non-caloric. I've never had a problem with it and began drinking it the day I was out of the hospital.

What is Your Goal Weight at 5'5

I'm 5'5" and had RNY in late 2010. I started at 252 lbs. and wanted to lose 100 lbs. I hadn't achieved that until 2014. Up until then, I stayed around 173 lbs. I'm not sure how I lost more weight, I wasn't trying. Now I'm thinking I'd like to get down to 140.
  8. For me, and I'm a 5 times/year potsmoker, smoking after WLS was like smoking that first joint in that I got very high. But in hindsight, pot legislation was changing here in CA around the same time as my surgery and new plants with different THC %s became widely available. Interestingly, I don't know why so many of my friends have their medical marijuana cards. They seem fine to me, it's probably just a CYA thing.

    Everyone exercises?

I will be honest, 5-6 days of the week my exercise consists of nothing more than going up and down the stairs in my house, grocery shopping, getting the mail or other exercise that happens as part of life. One day of the week I go walk on the beach, but at a snail's pace because I'm always looking for seashells, which I'd miss if I was in a hurry.
  10. I got my RNY in 2010 and told no one. I had surgeries for kidney stones 2-3 times a year anyway so it wasn't hard for me to keep this from anyone. I grew up fat in a skinny family. My mother constantly pointed out how fat I was, how nothing looked good on me, asked me how much I weighed and what size I wore whenever I saw her. I tended to avoid her for this reason. Since I wasn't feeling a whole lotta love from the fam regarding my fatness, I decided they didn't need to know. I finally told them when they were concerned about my rapid weight loss. My mother was so upset that I chose to do something so "dramatic and drastic". I lost the weight and my sister in law was gaining weight. She then became the unfortunate focus of mom's fat focused tough love campaigns.

    Carbonation

I'm a patient of Dr. Callery's and I'm 4.25 yrs. out. I have been super compliant EXCEPT I've never stopped drinking diet soda. I think I cut back to 1-2/day during my first weeks post-op. As far as I can tell, I have suffered no ill effects. I drink any type of zero calorie but sweetened carbonated beverage I find. I drink flavored iced teas that I mix with 50/50 diet 7up or similar beverage at restaurants. I've lost 98 lbs. total, I'm now 154 lbs and 5'5". I'd like to lose another 10-15 lbs. I don't know if eliminating carbonation would help, but from everything I've ever heard, I shouldn't indulge in it.

    Sweet Tooth

I'm another RNYer that doesn't believe in depriving myself of anything. In the beginning I bought those sugar free chocolates, there are many brands with this same problem, they had Sugar Alcohols as sweeteners instead of sugar. These cause great gastric distress, as in non stop diarrhea for hours in many people. These ingredients have names like Sorbitol, Xylitol, Maltitol and can also be found in Diet Slurpees, which I learned the hard way. I'd rather indulge in a little of the good stuff than the chemical stuff any day.

11 year veteran with heartburn/intestinal issues

I'm 4+ years out and also have the gastrointestinal issues you speak of. I take omeprazole, which I think is aka: Prilosec. This can cause diarrhea. I also started on Lactaid pills and those have made a world of difference. But I know, I cannot eat a bunch of fruit, or veggies, or high fat or sugar because my stomach responds unfavorably. I seem to be OK with carbs and keep my weight loss so I'm grateful for that. And weirdly, since having surgery, I can almost never eat eggs without barfing.

Question for those a year or more out

I am 4+ years out. I'd wanted to lose about 110 lbs. I stayed stuck around the 85 lb. weight loss mark from year 1 - year 3, but in the last year I've lost another 13 lbs. without any real effort. I should add that the most exercise I ever get is walking on the beach at a leisurely pace so that I can spot and pick up seashells.

I Had Plastic Surgery 10-yrs after Bariatric Surgery

So amazing! You should be so proud. I've lost about 100 lbs. since my surgery 4.25 yrs. ago. I've just turned 49. So far I've been blessed with just some vertical wrinkling on my stomach but nothing more. I fully expected to need plastic surgery, especially living near the beach and in So Cal where people are so body conscious but I got lucky with elastic skin, I guess. Congrats to you. You are fabulous.

    Migraines

Oh gosh, sorry, I thought I was making that rose heart my avatar...Help anyone? Thanks.

    Migraines

Hi, I have both migraines and tension headaches. I would say my headaches are the only health issue that hasn't improved with the RNY. I am still on Topamax, Amytryptilline, Botox and other nerve injections for my headaches. I should add that I had the surgery at the end of 2010, a few months shy of my 45th bday. I'm now starting to feel some of those menopausal-type symptoms and have been told my headaches may be related to that.
