  1. I have found that sites like MY FITNESS PAL are indispensable !!! You absolutely MUST accurately log your food & exercise . I was quite successful in my approach to loosing weight. If you tell the absolute truth on Protein, calories, and exercise, I find it hard to believe it physically possible to stall at your weight with the calories claimed to consume. I consume 1200 to 1500 cal. per day, walk an hour or two a day, consume 100 to 140 grams of Protein a day and I'm 62 years old and...well look at my banner to see my success and I lost nearly all my weight in the first year.

Honest consumption and exercise logging will tell the truth, physics don't fib :)

  2. @@Steve Puckett was he really strict with the 10% weight loss requirement?

Dr. Mun is very strict, he will not hesitate to postpone or cancel your surgery if you are naughty ! Post surgery, follow his advice on eating on the follow up visit, he lets you progress a bit faster on what you can eat than Options class tells you. Just start Protein shakes ( 3 a day ) immediately if you are to visit him soon and go on this shake only diet two week prior to the surgery, it will ensure your acceptance and take fat off your liver to make Mun's job easier.

    GOOD LUCK !!

  3. @@Steve Puckett I just finished my Kaiser program and I was told all the surgeons at South Bay and West LA staple. I even asked if he sews and they said no. So just to be clear, Dr. Mun does sew everything even laproscopically?

Thank you for replying ! I wanted the best possible results for myself but the DS is the last gasp solution, Kaiser will do as a rehab or near death but quality of life is poor. R&Y worked great for me from Kaiser as you can see. Dr. Mun was my surgeon, and unlike most he only hand sews everything inside instead of staples, he feels he has greater control and staples can catch food creating problems and blockages. Just thought I'd let you know :)

Thank you for responding. I will consider Downey or South Bay if the provide great service and doctors.

Also thanks for the information on the DS. I have heard of it as being an option, but not those details. Good to know this.

I'm really curious because I do have a lot of concerns about staples, although everyone says they are safe. I just don't like the idea of them forever in my stomach. Thanks!

Yes Mun sewed everything for me and my fellow Mun patients in my Option support group !

  4. Wow Carol, you are soooo right on target. Its refreshing to hear an honest evaluation of our situations, no B.S. or ...."but they are healthy sugars because they are natural stuff". Its carbs, exercise ( varied ) and WATCHING THE scale.

    THANK YOU !

    Hi Carmen,

I am approaching 3 years post RNY – my surgery was 6/25/13. I am a 5’2” woman who began the journey at 331 pounds at age 48. This morning I weighed 130 pounds (which is high for me) – my low was 120. I would like to maintain at about 125. I have also found that I can eat anything that I want – only in much smaller amounts.

From what I have learned there are a couple of things at play. Beginning around 18 months post op most people begin to notice that their bodies will actually begin to absorb more of the calories (and hopefully nutrients) we are consuming. The human body continues to adjust and finds ways to metabolize the food we are consuming – so this only gets ‘worse’ as time goes on. The benefit of eating food and having it not be absorbed lessens dramatically over time. If our diet and exercise remain the same, we will begin to see the scale climb back up. By the way – this DOES NOT MEAN that we should stop taking our supplements. In order to make sure that we are receiving ALL nutrients that we need supplements will ALWAYS remain vital.

So, what can you do? If you are not tracking what you eat (I use MyFitnessPal.com), find a tracking system that works for you and start tracking everything you eat. Make sure that 1200 calories that you think you are eating are not more like 1400. It isn’t a lot, but it can have a devastating effect on the scale! It might be necessary for you to trim back your caloric intact to closer to 1000 per day.

Secondly, begin to mix up and/or increase your workouts. If you are walking 60 minutes every day, try to go 90 minutes or walk farther (therefore faster) in that 60 minutes. Add in weight training! I cannot tell you how important this is! Part of my problem is that a month ago I slipped on some ice and hurt my elbow and have not been able to lift weights. I am just beginning to be able to return to my BodyPump classes and I think that will help the scale move (hoping anyway!) Add in a new workout – try biking, a new elliptical, jogging, swimming, a dance class – something that your body is not used to. Just like with the food we eat, our bodies get use to a certain level of exercise and in order to continue to see benefits we sometimes have to “shock” it with something new.

Above all, remember that this is a life long journey. Even when you reach “Onederland” – and I know you can do it – you will still need to work hard if you want to stay there. I am still learning and I struggle every day to make the right decisions to keep me at my goal. My life is SO much better now that it was at 331 pounds – I know that I NEVER want to go back there.

    YOU CAN DO THIS!

    Carol

  5. Steve, are you kidding? Do you mean success in losing or getting to be 378 in the first place?

Do you mean now as a treat, reward type thing? please explain, thanks, p

OK Pedro, I'm just kidding, the truth is I find that a thread like this in a forum like this is just plain silly. I know you agree. chocolate should be considered poison to ALL OF US BARIATRIC PATIENTS.
Raw cacao is very beneficial to us, buying a mars bar is what is wrong. Assuming that a question is silly based on ur own definition is very limited in my opinion...and does not match the role of this forum by any means!

Just a helpful hint there are many ways to enjoy chocolate made with healthy ingredients like fruits, natural sweetners like agave and healthy oils like coconut.

Sent from my GT-N7100 using the BariatricPal App

    Hmmm, let's see...BMI 21.8 vs 50.6.....now who is silly ?

  7. I had my surgery in July of 2014 also ! I consume approx. 1200 cal. a day average also, I also walk an hour and a half six days a week. Pre-surgery weight of 378# today I'm 166#. Not sure what the problem is that you are having, I guess we are all different. I lost my 200# in about ten months and only a few more # after that. I lost more than I thought I could.

I have noticed the tendency to snack at night and must constantly reign in the desire, I hope this isn't your problem too. GOOD LUCK !!

  8. Don't know but since they enlarge a little during my endoscopy I can eat better. Also I stop Protein Shakes and bars I think those make me feel sick. Still I feel restriction when I eat. I'm honestly try to push a little but I get sick so I stop before feeling full. Around 1000 cal a day. Protein first. I really think my pouch it's too small. I'll go for second opinion on Jan 7

Well, I maintain 160 lbs. to 165 lbs. on between 1,000 and 1,400 calories ( and 120 grams of protein ) a day and I walk 2 1/2 hours a day. That in mind, think where a 1,000 calories and a fair amount of exercise might put you now.

  9. Please, just do the sleeve, its so much easier. ( Besides with my RNY I'll always be able to brag and out perform all the sleeve patients and make me look great :) ) Really, RNY is a more serious operation , you are actually shortening the length of the intestine that absorbs food. Every thing being equal, RNY trumps the sleeve, especially if you are diabetic. Just check out my numbers...'nuff said.

  10. Because, I haven't had time to post what I eat.

    I eat:

    String cheese

Dannon light and fit yogurt (2 a day probably)

    P3 (for breakfast)

lunch is usually a small chili or bacon chicken ranch salad from Wendy's with light ranch. Or a Subway Turkey chop salad with fat free ranch.

    banana

    berries

    mandarin oranges

    hummus

apples with cashew butter or almond butter

    I don't do well with meat. :(

I started putting it in Myfitness pal today as per the request of the NP.

Oh my, not near enough Protein ! Cottage cheese, any and all seafood, tofu, and if you really want Protein and calories....PEANUT BUTTER on everything !
