    The Edge of BMI

I have kaiser and I had the same issue. I had a starting BMI of 40 and I knew that if I lost the requested 10% of my body weight that I would be below 40 and I didn't have comorbidities. Halfway through the classes I asked if I was going to be disqualified and she said absolutely not. She was right, it was never an issue.

    Marriage/Relationship change

My husband has been nothing but supportive during this process. I think he likes seeing the changes in my body and he's not one to get jealous. He makes fun of me because my clothes are baggy but that is a great feeling so I cannot be mad.

    Baby food pureed vegatables

I have a younger child so I was excited about the purée stage because some of that baby food is delicious. I used to wait for him to be done eating so I could have the rest lol I like the plain green beans, peas, prunes, and sweet potatoes. Also, Plum Organics makes some great flavor combinations, but the (natural) sugar content can get high.

    Kaiser Permanente Options program

@@thisfathasgot2go No I didn't lose the 10% of my body weight by the end of the classes. I was about 6lbs shy of my goal when I went in for the final body analysis. No one said anything about the goal, they just congratulated me for the progress that I made. I did hit the 10% by the time I went in for my pre-op appointment but again, no one cared lol

    Kaiser Permanente Options program

@@thisfathasgot2go Not sure if the tag is working or if I did it right, I am mobile. In the classes they kept telling us 4-6 weeks after the last class the surgeon's office will call. My last class was May 27th, the surgeon's office called June 8th. My consult appointment was scheduled for June 12th and my surgery date was initially set for July 7th but they called me a couple of days later and moved it up to July 6th. Looking back it went by really fast. I had surgery at the South Bay medical center.
  6. I also had issues with protein. My go to was premier but when I tried the powder and RTD post surgery, they both made me sick. Then I tried other brands in chocolate flavors and the same thing. I ended up going to the vitamin shoppe and finding an unflavored protein powder that I now use when I make smoothies. Much better results.

    Kaiser Permanente Options program

Good luck to everyone in this thread. I am also in SoCal and completed the Kaiser options program; I had surgery on 7/6. Overall, I was happy with the process, especially since it seems a lot of people have to submit paperwork to their insurance company and play the waiting game, which I didn't have to do.

    Hamburgers are gross

Alfredo sauce is gross. Pre-op I could probably drink that stuff with a straw. But I went to the Cheesecake Factory, smelled the Alfredo sauce and was gagging internally.

    New Here!

Hi Brandon and welcome. I was required to lose 10% of my body weight. I was a couple of pounds shy of that goal by the time my classes ended but I made it by the time I met with the surgeon.

Pre op and post op shopping

    1. I would have a shake for breakfast, a Protein bar as a snack, shake for lunch, Protein Bar, and for dinner a lean meat with a vegetable and starch. 2. I have only tried isopure post op and I didn't like it, mango peach I think. My issue with it was that it tasted like juice with some whey protein mixed it. (Probably not a helpful answer for you, sorry). 3. The only things that I brought that I really needed was the pillow, sandals for walking around the hospital, and my 6 foot iPhone charger. 4. Post op diet: the first week I lived on watered down juice, Water, sugar free creamsicles/Popsicles/fudge pops, and soup (I love egg drop soup and the cream chicken and wild rice from panera). I bought a whole case of premier Protein shakes before surgery and ended up drinking it all before hand. It was a good thing because I no longer tolerate premier, or any of the flavored stuff for that matter. I bought an unflavored powder that I add to smoothies. I also go to Jamba Juice, get a small smoothie with a shot of protein and it takes me a day to drink that. I have tried Peanut Butter (no Bueno but it was my own fault), yogurt didn't do well, I was okay with grits and oatmeal, refried Beans were okay, baby food was also a good one for me because that comes in so many flavors. eggs are a work in progress, I love them but I feel like they sit in my throat for hours and it's uncomfortable so I currently avoid them. I am currently working on eating 3 meals a day; I eat probably once a day and it's because I don't fee like eating or when I do I just drink water and the feeling goes away. Honestly, I would much rather drink than eat.

What all did you have to do

I had to attend an information session where I filled out a 7 page packet on my weight and diet history. During that session I had to pick the track I was going to attend. I had a body analysis after that (they weighed me and took my picture). The classes were 12 weeks long. During that time, I had to have a psych evaluation, blood sample/stool work, keep daily food logs of everything I ate, meet with the lead bariatric doctor, and lose 10% of my body weight. After the class was over, I had another body analysis and I met with the surgeon where a date was set. I first asked my doctor about bariatric surgery at the end of January and I had the actually surgery the first part of July.

    Anyone from southern california

Hello! I am in Southern California, Los Angeles to be exact. I had the sleeve done on 7/6.
  13. The pain of the incisions was tolerable. I only felt them when I was trying to move around or get myself out of bed. The real pain culprit for me was the gas, it was bad for about the first day but I kept getting up and walking around to get rid of it. It took about a day for me to get some relief from the gas.
  14. In the bariatric classes, they tell you that you will be in one night but I earned myself an extra night because I wasn't able to drink enough water. So I was there two nights.
  15. I don't know if you have experience with ordering dresses or if you have a large chest but I will give you my experience. I have a large bust and I lost about 30lbs before my wedding. My boobs did not get any smaller. I ordered a 14. When the dress arrived, it zipped over my stomach fine but that zipper was not going to meet when it got close to my boobs. My stomach was a 14, my boobs however were a 20. So they had to rush order another dress. Moral of the story is buy the dress to your bust, they can take in the stomach but cannot let out enough for your bust. I have the same issue now, I have lost around 50lbs since I started my sleeve journey and my boobs are still huge.

    Surgery in 36 hours

What it feels like to go under... Whatever they put in that IV will make you believe everything will be okay (and it will be) and take away your worries. Basically, I was high, and I remember singing Kokomo and all of the surgical staff joining in with me. As for the catheter, I will assume you are taking about the one that is for urination, I loved it, I didn't have to get up to pee and I didn't have the urge to go, it just happens. Good luck to you!

    Devistated-WLS excluded from plan

First of all, I am sorry that you find yourself in this situation. Second, if I were in your shoes, I would take my 2015 tax return money and go right on over to Mexico. I actually thought about going to Mexico when I wasn't sure whether or not I would be approved for Kaiser's bariatric program.

How long were you out of work?

I am a personal assistant so I took two weeks off. That was the perfect amount of time. By then, I didn't need pain meds during the day and was able to stay awake.

    Calcium Chews

I have the same issue with the bariatric advantage calcium chews. It's takes me forever to eat them, it's like a meal, and they upset my stomach. I have been looking on Amazon and barimelts has a calcium tablet that melts in your mouth and had good reviews. I am going to try that one.

Insurance only cover some types WLS?

I have Kaiser SoCal and they cover the RnY and the sleeve, they no longer perform the lapband procedure.

    Swimming incision question!?

I had surgery on 7/6 and my staples removed on 7/16. Had he steri strips over the staples holes for a couple of days and the doctor said I could I swimming once those fell off. My incisions are healed and the staple holes are stabbed over.

What you wish you would have known

I second the relearning how to eat. In the classes they stressed the importance of eating slowing, chewing thoroughly, sipping, and taking small bites. That is something I wish I practiced. I have already made myself sick because I absentmindedly ate as if I was not sleeved and paid dearly for it. Congrats on your surgery date and good luck to you!
  23. @Imm I had the heparin (blood thinner) but those shots were given to me in the hospital, and I didn't continue them when I was discharged.
  24. Some of you paid a lot of money. I had a $40 copay to see the doctor, $40 copay to see the therapist, and $40 copay to see the surgeon. Surgery was free and the hospital stay was free. It cost me a total of $120 and I used my husbands HSA card for those charges. I have kaiser through my husband's job.

    Acid Reflux

Have you talked to your doctor? I was on IV Pepcid in the hospital and I was also having acid issues when I got home. I went to the drug store and bought the chewable Pepcid complete. When I went back to the doctor I was telling him about it and he realized he forgot to prescribe an antacid for me. It's 4x as strong as the one I bought in the store and I feel much better. Good luck to you!
