  1. I am 3 days post op too. My shoulder pain was horrific the first 36 hours. It is trapped gas from the laproscopic surgery, causing referred nerve pain. Unfortunately the only way to cure it is to reabsorb the gas and pass it. Walking & time will do the most. For me, heating pad to the shoulder also helped.

  2. Thanks, I have worked there before, though it has been years. It can be exhausting, but first week is orientation so and then a few weeks with a preceptor.

I am concerned about eating, when I am working it is almost always run to break room or fish around in my purse, get something & gulp it down, go back to work. The RN at the surgeon's office was positive that I would be fine with premade Protein Shakes I could sip. This unit is new to me so I don't know the rules for meals, breaks, & drinks in the charting area.

My other option is to wait until the next orientation at the end of May. I haven't told them about the surgery, the job offer came recently & surgery has been scheduled a while. I am thinking I would be better off letting them know about it, & then waiting to start until next month. Bah, so much to worry over.

  3. I am a RN, getting a gastric sleeve on Thursday 4/16. I also just got a fantastic new job...that starts 10 days after my surgery.

It is in the nicu, so no heavy lifting. But I am so nervous about making such a huge change physically at the same time I am changing my job as well.

I have been a nurse for 20 years, & am also in a MSN program. A lot to do & my body needs to be able to keep up with my brain.

  4. I am at a BMI of 35, 5'5 and just over 200 lbs. I have lost the same 60-80 lbs. almost 10 times over the past 20 years and am starting to develop hypertension. I am losing the battle a little more every time I gain it back.

I am getting a gastric sleeve 4/16, and have not told anyone outside my husband and teenage son that I am getting it. I know I need it but most people I know won't understand. I am a RN and husband is in the fitness industry, and in both places there is not a lot of support for surgery at the lower end of the obesity scale.

It helps a lot to see I am not crazy to want to do this now & not wait until I am heavier.

  5. I am also a nurse, and do pediatric home health. At work I have to haul a portable ventilator, oxygen tank and a 6 y.o. on the school bus and at kindergarten. I do 12 hour shifts.

I really don't want to miss more than a couple of weeks at work, but I am not sure it is possible to go back and not have to lift 50 + lbs often.

How long does it take before energy returns and you can lift things safely?

    My surgery is 4/16.

  6. I am taking 40 mg Prozac daily. Without it I have severe clinical depression. Even with it, winters are rough. It took me years to figure out the right dosage/antidepressant to be able to function.

I am scheduled for surgery 4/16 & I am terrified that my level of medication will change, that I will lose ground and not be able to function.

How does the surgery change affect medications for chronic conditions?
