My doctor wanted me to pick a goal weight. Being obese all my life, anything that started with a 1 seemed foreign to me. I picked 175. My stretch weight would be whatever the bmi charts say for the high end of normal (160) I think. I'm not that interested in my stretch weight.
My reason for losing was to get me active in my life, (Though I think I did pretty well even at my weight, I definitely wasn't a 'shut-in') and ward off health complications. And I want to shop anywhere.
And l never, ever, EVER wanted to become known as 'Big Momma' or any similar term of endearment.

I know what your talking about. The gas gives the feeling that it's pulling at the incisions for me. I didn't stay longer in the hospital, but am taking pain meds Tylenol 3 around the clock. I'm managing on my own, but it does hurt.

I wasn't allowed anything the day of surgery. they did give me these sticks with sponges dipped in a mouthwash type liquid I was able to swab my mouth with.they helped a lot.

Can anyone tell me this, is it nessasary for the hospital and doctor to place a drain line in for after surgery? Also do they have to do a catheter while you are staying in the hospital?
Thank you!
I didn't have a drain but did have a catheter. I was actually sad when they took the catheter out cause I knew I'd need to move to go to the bathroom on my own. Thank god for the pain pump!

I had surgery the 28th. My gas is only in my abdomen, hasn't shifted anywhere else. It painful to me because of the pressure it puts on the incisions. the gas itself seems like horrible bloating. I can feel the gas move around as I walk, but can only muster up some teeny tiny burps from time to time. I did start passing gas last night, was very happy about that.
Luckily I have no issues drinking, but it is hard to tell when I'm full.

Hi, I had my bypass surgery yesterday. My HW was 338, SW was 315.
Surgery went well, doc even thanked me for helping him do a good surgery by losing weight pre op. There was a 'slight' hernia repair done as well. When I woke in recovery my pain was at 6.6, that's what I recall telling the nurse. Only pain I felt was in my abdomen, and it was a tightness more than pain. Honestly, it felt like I had a Tummy Tuck. Apparently it's the gas thats giving that feeling, I realize now is bloating. I have walked a few times, it's hard because I don't feel like I have the lung capacity. I'm using my spirometer faithfully though.
I'm off the morphine drip and am taking Tylenol 3 as needed. I have been sipping Water today, don't have any desire for the Jello or broth they gave me. I don't have any nausea. The bloating keeps me from recognizing if I'm full, the doc said not to worry about ounces consumed for now, he just wants to make sure I'm able to drink.
I should be discharged today, which I feel confident about. They are setting up for a nurse to visit me at home to.
Very happy with my surgeon, and hospital experience.

I didn't have a Dr supervised weight loss requirement. Had my first visit on 3/4/15, my surgery is tomorrow.

My nut is the diet devil in person. she will not let me have anything but broth, shakes, Jello, and sugar free Popsicles. She wrote "Absolutely No food Allowed" in huge red letters on my diet sheet. I'm starting to prepare for my hospital stay, so far I've grabbed a robe, 2 pairs of comfy pj's, 2 sets of comfy underwear, tooth brush, and Chapstick. Are you getting ready yet?
I'm getting ready by deep cleaning my house today. Started last night with the kitchen, emptied and cleaned the fridge. Today is the bathroom, living and dining rooms and my bedroom. If I come home to a messy house it'll make me angry, and I want to start recovery on a good mental note. Only thing I need to buy are slippers, (I hate those hospital socks). I'll pack my bag Monday night. I plan on wearing yoga pants or my work out capris to/ from the hospital.

Things just got real for those of us going under on the 28th. I can proudly report that I am on my 12th day of the liquid diet and I've not cheated once. How I got here, I don't even know. I guess the fear of surgery has kept me honest. How's everybody else doing?
I'm the 28th too. My pre op diet was 14 days as well. I did eat one night to Celebrate my hubby's birthday. My nut also allowed me to have'chunks' in my Soup, as long as it was limited to 4oz. As of last Sunday I lost 10#. I weigh again tomorrow. I'm ready!

I'm on Day 8, 6 more to go. Yes, I feel weak. You're taking in far less calories than normal, and still burning them too. I couldn't attack my yard work with the usual gusto. I refuse to work out in this phase and expend the energy I do have.
Its manageable tough, not impossible.

I have 3 friends who had the VSG, only one dumps and it's because of how she eats. She eats things even though her stomach doesn't agree with it [too greasy, sweet, etc] and she doesn't stop when she is full. She has a pickle jar that she dumps into while she's eating at home. If we're out, she'll ask for a styrofoam cup or bowl and dump into but will continue to eat. I haven't gotten my sleeve yet but it really just seems to be a matter of listening to your stomach and steering clear of what upsets it... and not overeating.
That didn't sound like dumping, that sounds like vomiting. Dumping usually entails a racing heart, lightheadedness, intestinal cramping etc.

I'm in day 7. What helped me is knowing every pound I lose now is one less to lose after surgery.... Therefore making me closer to goal.
Also the surgeons picture of a fatty liver vs a healthy one helped too!

I am right there with you. Today I could not care less about food. Diarrhea has overtaken me from all the liquids. no fun! I'm ready for the surgery, how about you?
Yes, totally ready for surgery. I'm a little concerned about recovery since I don't feel 100% now, but am ready ready ready!

So I'm following the pre op diet very well, so much so I'm surprising myself. I've lost 11#s.
However, I feel worn out, and weak (started feeling like that @ day 2 and it hasn't turned around.) activities I can usually handle with no issue (i.e yard work) leaves me needing to take breaks and not work at my usual pace.
And since yesterday I've had no appetite at all. I only got in one shake, Water and Soup. Today, the same. Oddly, I feel bloated which is what I think is suppressing my appetite, and I'm taking gas x to help.
But I've eaten nothing to give me that bloated effect...
Any thoughts, suggestions?

congrats on getting your new job
coinciding new job/along with new weight loss
kindof sounds cool but rotten timing
your new job starts Monday??
2 weeks later is surgery??
its good that you've already told new boss about pending surgery
did you tell her you are having WLS?
how did she react ??
pre-op you "should" be able to work
i would try not to take any time any off before WLS
save that time for PO
taking a couple of weeks off is frequently enough PO
don't automatically think you will need more time off
i have read many times that people go in and out friday back to work monday
i think that is a little extreme,
it does happen
hopefully you "only" have the minor common side effects of surgery
gas, tiredness etc
if you still aren't feeling the best
but you know you could/should start work
ask your boss now, "just in case"
if you could work 1/2 days for a week or so after your 2 weeks is up
if the reaction is not the best....
move your surgery date back a couple of months
I wouldn't love that
but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do
but jeopardizing your new job???
you wouldn't want to do that either
hard choices
weigh your options carefully
you'll come to the right decision for you
good luck with surgery (work too)
speedy recovery
kathy
My new job wouldn't start till after surgery on the 28th. Ideally 5/11. My current boss knows it's wls, she is very supportive and excited for me.
I'm not moving the surgery... I refuse to go backwards on the pre op diet lol. I like the idea if part time for a bit if needed.
Thanks for the insight!

Take care of yourself and if you need to take more time I would recommend doing so even if it is a new job. Rather take the time you need to be healthy than to start a new job when you can't perform at your best. First impressions are critical. If they frown on you doing what is best for you that would be a major red flag for me. Just my take.
very good point. I doubt they'd frown on it... I'd just be to uncomfortable to ask. (But if my doc thought it was necessary, I'd get over it fast)

Pick me, pick me! I'm having bypass on 4/28! Looked into it 5 years ago and backed out too!!!

Hi,
So my time frame on this WLS journey was short, my 1st consult was 3/4, my surgery is on 4/28. Just after my first consult I'd interviewed for a position (same company I work for now, just a different dept). I hadn't heard anything back, and when I followed up they said they were still weighing their options. I assumed I didn't get it.
Well now I've been offered the position. I need the extra $$, and the idea of starting off in a 'new' place post WLS seems exciting and a great way to kick off the 'new me' thing.
I'm also on day 3 of the pre-op diet-- based on how I'm feeling now (low-energy/ somewhat weak), and knowing having a major surgery will further deplete me-- I worry about starting a position with so many questions over how I'll feel, heal etc. I need to have my 'A' game in a new role.
I'm taking two weeks off post surgery, and had told my current boss if I didn't feel ready, I would take more time. But if I accept the new position, I'll feel obligated to come back soon, no matter what.
So many good things happening for me right now-- but they just conflict with one another!!
Any thoughts/insight?

My pscyh eval was about 15 minutes long. No paperwork, just a conversation with the pysch. I was certain to tell him that I've visited my weight/eating issues a long time ago with another therapist; and think I was able to clearly convey that 1) I had a full understanding of what I'm about to do 2) I easily identify with behaviors, habits emotions, etc that have contributed to me be so overweight 3) I am not a threat to myself or others, and based on family history do not have a 'pre-disposition' to addictions, depression.

Thare exactly how mine went.. 15 minutes, approved and done!
Your one step closer!

First Day Home after Gastric Bypass Surgery
in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Posted
This is almost exactly how I feel! Surgery was 4/28 and when I stood the first time, my stomach felt like a led weight was in it and ready to hit the ground. That sensation made it feel like my incisions were being pulled. It's bad but I'm still making myself walk.
My arm is numb from the elbow to shoulder, they must have hit a nerve with the IV.
We'll get through this though!
