@@mrmbv, I don't know if they have support groups. I personally, did not attend one . I did enjoy the hospital . I had a room to myself . The staff were attentive. I slept the entire time with the exception of having to go to the restroom what seemed like every two hours. My physician Dr. Tapazoglou.

    Bougie size

I asked and mines uses a 50. I asked for a tight sleeve and he said those who use the lower numbers don't actually cut against it. He said at a 50, my sleeve would be about the size of a nickel

    I can't tell mother

You know, I feel you on not wanting to tell your mother. My surgery is February 12th. I didn't want to tell my parents either. Particularly my mother. She is a lifetime weight watcher who touts what it was like when she was 160 pounds. I also didn't want to tell my boyfriend. I told them that I was having a liver biopsy, which was a partial truth. I'm 44. I'm "grown" and my parents are intelligent. If you drop weight as quickly as folks tend to do with weight loss surgery, folks will either deduce that you had weight loss surgery or think that you are ill. Either way, they will be concerned. Last night, I told my mother. I said it conversationally, while shopping at Walgreens. She asked what I was shopping for. I told her the magnesium caltrate. She asked why I needed that and asked what I getting a colonoscopy. I told her no, I need it before my surgery. I mentioned I had told her about the liver biopsy. I told her I had my final pre-op the day before and I decided to have my stomach stapled. I told her the surgeon could do it while he is doing my liver biopsy and the whole thing should only take 45 minutes to an hour. She may have been taken aback, but she said, "oh" then she mentioned she would pray for me because that is all that she can do. That was it. Part of being "grown" is owning your decisions and choices. People are always going to talk and have something to say. My family was there for me when I had rhabdomyolysis. That showed me they would do anything for me. While they may disagree with my decision and think it irrational and unnecessary, they know I need to lose weight. They know my health will improve if I lose weight. They disagree with the methodology. Surgery scares everyone, especially what is "considered" elective surgery. Weight loss surgery is "considered" elective. That is why you have to do the 3 or 6 month pre-op and stress over whether the surgery will be approved or not. Why can you just lose the weight naturally. So and so did it. Why can't you do weight watchers? Well, why can't people just stop smoking or stop doing drugs or any other addiction? Because if it were that easy, there would be no addiction in the first place or results of the addiction. If your choice is to claim your life, then take it back from everyone, including the people who you are allowing to make you hold your emotions captive. Best of luck on whatever decision you choose.

    Pre-op testing?

Okay, so I messed up. I was in such a rush to get my blood work done today that I was not honest about eating before the blood work. I was not told that I needed to fast until I took the test. I was untruthful and said I only had a small sip of Gatorade this morning, where in fact I had a Mountain Dew, a cookie, and half of a Subway sandwich. And though this will throw my scores off but I was hoping it wouldn't really make a difference one way or another since the surgery will assist with anything that the scores would indicate. I am considering going back tomorrow and seeing whether they will retest me. I was just so anxious to get the blood work over and done with.

    Pre-op testing?

@@BloomingLotus - I thought the "Medical Clearance" was the final pre-op visit with the surgeon. My PCP was booked until the first week of February. I explained that I needed the pre-op medical clearance and the PCP called me and was able to squeeze me in next week. Instead of requesting an emergency apt, request to be squeezed in and offer to see another doctor in the same practice who could use your PCP's notes to write the clearance. It is what I had to do. Best of luck and keep us posted on your success.

    Any February Sleevers

@@KatieD6982, the malabsorption would also mean that you may experience difficulty absorbing nutrients from food, thus it increases the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, after surgery, ti will be important to follow your doctor's guidelines for nutritional supplementation (i.e., vitamins, calcium, iron, etc.)

    Denial after Precertification Approval (Aetna)?

I had my first appointment with surgeon in Virginia on October 15. I weighed 265. I had my first appointment with my primary care on October 31 I weighed 269. I had my second appointment with my primary care on November 18. I weighed 276.2. I had a third appointment with my primary care and I weighed 276.4. Worried about net weight gain, I did the cabbage soup diet and went back to my primary care on January 6. I weighed 266.2. My surgeon submitted my paperwork to Aetna open access on January 9. The surgeon was told I was denied due to net weight gain. Unknown to me the surgeon coordinator appealed on my behalf indicating blood pressure medicine had caused me to gain water weight and that I had since been on a diuretic and lost weight. Aetna approved on Friday, January 16. Submittal rejection appeal and approval all took 7 days. My surgery is scheduled for February 12.
