50 shades of Grey
Am I the only one who thought the movie was horrid? Someone described it as "two awkward people having sex" - I concur totally. When I'm on my "bariatric work break" (i.e. post op) I'm going to read the books because I heard they were much better.

So I've decided to do this - Insurance willing...
Thank you Xine. I think I'm going to start a journal - that is EXCELLENT advice. Complete with gel pens and stickers - I'm a kid at heart. Small update - I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea as of last week. This process is moving very quickly; my meeting with the Nutritionist and my Cardio test is tomorrow. I am actually going for the sleeve instead of the lap band...both my PCP and my bariatric surgeon thought it would be a better fit for me.

Sleep Study - What to expect
I guess different people have different experiences. I've had two - one without a CPAP and my second one (just yesterday) with a CPAP. I did not enjoy either one. Between all the wires, my mind being "busy" knowing someone's watching me, and the fact that they make you sleep on your back (I'm a stomach sleeper) - I did not sleep well at all. The air from the CPAP machine didn't bother me (I actually kind of liked it), but the mask itself bothered my face and I had a red ring around my nose afterward. On the bright side (I guess) - I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea so it's definitely going to help my case. Good luck!

What Does Valentine’s Day Mean to You?
So I feel kind of bad. I just told a friend that "I'm not really thinking about Valentine's day because I'm too focused on other things". Nothing could be further from the truth. In 38 years, I only remember 2 occasions where I was special enough for someone to call me their "Valentine". I am somewhat dating a dude now, and it would make all the difference in the world to me if he would acknowledge me on Valentine's day, or get me a gift (no matter how small). It would make me extremely happy that someone of the opposite sex wanted to be my Valentine. (not that it matters, but I'm pre op. No kids or husband if that puts it into perspective for anyone).

Worst "compliment" you have gotten since surgery
"I don't keep toxic people in my life who think they are "keeping it real" by being rude." I totally agree. I think there is a segment of the population who use "keeping it real" as an excuse to be rude, mean, bi***y a**holes. There is a way that you can tell someone things that aren't so nice without being mean spirited and hurting the other person's feelings. Yes, this is a soapbox for me. /end rant

Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve
My attitude sucks right now - sorry - but I'm at a point in life where I feel a like a good number of people are mean judgemental hypocrites. And I'm not even going to get started on facebook, but I digress... What I've noticed is that with each time I lose weight - it becomes harder and harder for me to keep the weight off. First time - cut out sweets/fried foods Second time - cut out sweets/fried foods/white flour Third time - cut out sweets, fried foods, white flour, add 30 mins exercise Fourth time - cut out sweets, fried foods, white flour, processed foods, 30 mins exercise Fifth time - cut out sweets, fried foods, , white flour, processed foods, 1 hour exercise, + 30 mins running And so on and so on. I know this is a lifetime battle...but it's becoming more and more difficult with each time I lose and regain. Meanwhile there are people like my brother who do nothing but eat junk and gain no weight. (Yes I'm being a hater right now).

My mother told everyone about my surgery!
This is EXACTLY why I haven't told my mom. The last time I told her not to talk about something to others, she did it anyway. I love my mom dearly but I'm now realizing one of her weaknesses is keeping her big frigging mouth shut...

Why did you choose Gastric Sleeve?
This! I spoke to my PCP about having surgery - and she recommended the sleeve over the band and bypass. When I spoke to my bariatric surgeon, she also recommended the sleeve over other options. I was initially considering the band, but my bariatric surgeon stated that she's having to do more revisions and seeing more complications with the band than with any of the other surgeries. So sleeve it is.

Getting closer and having doubts
Good luck! I had my sleep apnea test on Tuesday and slept horribly. Hope it helps my case though

Getting closer and having doubts
I know the feeling. I just started this process about two weeks ago and it's moving very quickly. I have my meeting with the NUT and a cardio test on 2/12. After that it's the EGD then submission for approval, which means I could be having surgery probably as early as march. I'm scared too and a part of me is wondering if that's enough time to "get my mind right". Hang in there though - I'm in it with you!

What is everyone NOT going to miss after sleeve?
I wont miss taking forever to get ready to go out because I'm looking for "clothes that don't make me look fat".

Ugh my periods are out of control!
Hello everyone! So right now I'm preop - if everything goes as planned I should be sleeved in May or June. So here's my dilemma - for the last 6 months, my periods have been out of control. For the first 4 months, I was off the pill, So in December, I decided to go back on the pill (I'm on low dose because of my hypertension) to see if that would help. It seems to have made it worse. This month I've been "red" for 9 days now...I've never had these kinds of issues. Not only am I "Seeing red" but I have cramps from hell and its like Niagara falls! Will this get better after surgery? It's making me miserable. Not only that, it's embarrassing at work to run to the bathroom every two hours and live in fear that I've stained my pants. I'm at super absorbency tampons + a pad...I'm feeling like I'm 12 again! Side note - I am also hypothyroid - controlled with meds and pending results of another test - so I don't know if this has anything to do with it.

Let's Talk: Fears?
food has been an integral part of my life for so long. A lot of my social life revolves around food (and a bit of alcohol to some extent). I am mentally trying to prepare myself to change that aspect of life, and there's a part of me that does not like it. However, I cannot continue down this path I'm on, so I definitely need to change my mindset. I'm also afraid of not making it through that pre and post op liquid diet when it's time...but I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it. For now, the food = celebration part is the most important piece that I have to change.

Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve
My BMI is 35.8 and I've decided not to tell many people because of the "not big enough" commentary. I haven't told my mom because I know she's totally against the idea. I'm going to tell her the week before so its "too late" for her to really say anything to get to me. I am also keeping quiet because I know some feel this is the easy way out. After I left my initial consult I felt disappointment and ashamed of myself because I've done so well in so many other areas of my life but have totally failed in getting a handle on my weight. I can't count how many times I've lost and regained. Last year I ran a half marathon but managed to put on 20 lbs post race. On two meds for my blood pressure and the running + my weight is murdering my joints. So glad I made this decision...just hoping i am approved.

So I've decided to do this - Insurance willing...
Hello Everyone - my name is Lexie and I've recently made the decision to have surgery. I've struggled with my weight all of my life and I feel like I need a helping hand to maintain. So I've been doing a bit of research and I know that generally you have to prove that you have struggled with your weight. Luckily for me, I'm a bit of a packrat - so I've got medical records back to 2004 which document my weight! I've fluctuated anywhere from 282 to 227 since 2004. I also have a few comorbidities - such as high blood pressure, joint pain, acid reflux, possibly sleep apnea (going to see if insurance recommends a sleep study) - and on top of all of that, I also suffer from hypothyroidism and depression. So the kicker, I've put on 20 pounds since March of last year - but to make it EVEN BETTER - I ran a half marathon last April! Who does that? Oh yeah, me. Luckily for me, I have very good insurance through my employer (United Insurance and an awesome package). So far, I know my insurance covers the surgery, but we'll see if they give me a hard way to go about it. I have my first consult with the surgeon next week. Wish me luck! I have not told a lot of people for fear of judgement. You would think since I've been running for the last 6 years, this would prove my efforts to try, but I know there are people that think surgery is the "easy way out". I have told 3 of my friends - 2 of them are supportive (they know how much I've struggled with my weight and how much I've really tried through diet and exercise to "do the right thing") - the other friend (who is also a lap bander) is trying to talk me out of it, for she feels I'm not "big enough". I am starting to regret telling her because I am starting to feel like she's judging me. According to BMI charts I am obese - BMI is 36.9 and I have comorbidities - and I've struggled with weight issues all of my adult life. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens...I'm so glad a friend told me about this forum!
