How is weight loss for people over 50?

Sorry to hear about your cold! There have been colds & tummy flu all around me & I've tried so hard to stay healthy for surgery. Would hate to have to be rescheduled. I normally get something right after Christmas because I'm worn down, but this year my DIL did the entertaining & cooking, my shopping was done by Nov so I could concentrate on staying healthy. I don't have a preop diet but since Christmas have concentrated on high protein low carb & lots of H20. I still have had no drive to exercise. The last two weeks I've exercised 3 times for 10 or 15 minutes. The next two days my knees hurt, I give up & try again in a couple days....but no drive there. I pray that it comes with the loss of a few lbs. This AM I decided to walk to the back of our lot & back & do it twice a day....it's a starting place I can deal with today. Is your hunger.....head hunger or tummy hunger? I know the head hunger is going to be my biggest challenge. I've made a little 3x5 card with little things to do to deter emotional eating. I'd better make more to put all over the house! LOL Thanks again! Hope you are feeling better soon. Carol

NM Sunshine & Physer! When I get this band thing mastered I'm going to be asking you about this RVing! That is DH & my dream. No RV yet but with fuel these days we were having doubts...figure we'll just need to plan better & stay in one place longer....it's what we've worked for! Enjoy! Want to take the time to thank all of you for your posts & support. Only 10 more days for me!:whoo: I'm so ready. I'm SO sick of my clothes-don't feel good in anything, I'm ready for change, I'm ready for the challenges..........I'm ready! Thank you all! Happy New Year! Carol
  10. Amen to "men think differently than women"! But that's a good thing! How boring it would be if we all thought the same. Of course they love and worry about us. They are also smart enough to know that when we change it changes their world too. We all have the same fear of "change". Life is change and we all have to help each other through it.
  11. Sewenup, you are welcome anytime! Good response. You mentioned your DH being concerned about your pre-op. It's true that the changes we are going to face about eating are going to effect our spouses too. Eating is a sharing experience and it is what we do with our families. We come home from work, we sit down and share our days and we share food. That can be healthy or unhealthy but that is definately a "change" for all of us involved in that relationship to food. Congratulations on your band! Almost a month now. How are you feeling? What kind of postop diet are you on? Thanks for sharing. Carol
  12. CITYGIRL! Been there, done that & some days are good but somedays I still get the "looks". I've talked about this surgery off & on for a couple years. My husband always said "no way", so I should have been prepared, but I am still shocked some days at his reactions. We have been blessed with an incredible relationship all the way around, but I have to say this has been the most difficult "issue" we have experienced. In August we had family over for a swim/bbq party. Of course I didn't swim because of my size. But then my brother emailed his pictures & I didn't even recognize myself at 313 lbs. I was devastated. I'm 56, healthy except for knees, feet, no mobility, energy or self-esteem. Sometime that next week I spoke to him & said "I want to have this surgery, will you give me your blessing?" Long story short, he said if our family doc gave his blessing, he would. Doc did and I went forward. DH did not want to go to the seminar (11/3), he did not go to the consult or asked about any appts. His responses or lack of response hurt me too and yet I just kept plowing forward alone until I found this board. I had never posted on a board before and received so much comfort & support here....sometimes just reading. I still get the negative response when I'm on the computer from him.....but you know what....he doesn't get it, it isn't his fault....we're different people. The best conversation we have had concerning this, I listened to everything he said. The thing that shocked me was he thought I was doing this so I would look good to other men or that I was trying to recapture my youth! OMG! The other "biggie" he says I'll change...& the basic fears we all have about having elective surgery. Even after that long talk where he said he would support my decision, though he doesn't understand it, he would take me & be with me for the surgery...all that....but he does not like the choice I made. He says I'm so strong in every part of my life and I can lose weight & exercise if I just would decide to do it. The gammit of emotions have been many. But I am going to do this for myself, my future & our future, I want to live and be productive and be a part of my kids and grandkid's lives. I bet if you asked him right now when my surgery was, he wouldn't know, but that's ok. I'll remind him a couple days before and I know he'll love me, take care of me and as I lose and gain control over my weight, he will see what I can see now. For me, I think this has been difficult because I am a pleaser and this decision had to be mine instead of a "couple" decision. I have to say it has been one of the hardest decisions because he didn't agree and I respect his feelings & want him to be comfortable. He isn't. But I do believe this is the right decision for my well being. As hard as it is, talk and listen to his needs & concerns, do the best you can and pray. Know that you can come here anytime and share, vent and you won't be judged. Feel free to PM me if you'd like. January 2008 (I'm the 10th too!) is going to be a great start for a healthier life. I commend you for taking this control over your health now. Go New Year's Knockouts! Carol

Hi from Atlanta! Getting banded on Jan. 10th!

Welcome citygirl! I'm also Jan 10th and very excited. I made my list yesterday of items to pack for hospital & I've filled my pain med, liquid tylenol, chewable vitamins and prepared foods. My doc only has a two day preop diet, three days liquids postop and soft proteins for 4 weeks. Best wishes to everyone! Keep in touch! Carol

Hi! I'm in N. Glendale & going to Mexico

Welcome Illfeelqtagain! I'm in N. Glendale too. I'm going to Dr. Blackstone and my surgery date is Jan 10th! Very excited! I'm not familar with Mexico, but there many great posts here. Do a search for Mexico Doctors or look up WASABUBBLEBUT. She is also from AZ, an RN, familar with Mexico docs and has been very successful with her band. She will be very informative. Best of luck to you on your journey. This is a great place for information & support.
  15. Let's go show 'em how it's done! I'm so ready! Best wishes to you all!

  17. Ok by me, but we need to do it ASAP! There are people going for surgery this week & they want to have that name connection when they go. Let's direct the question to them? Just an idea. Carol
  18. OH MY GOSH! Tomorrow morning! I'm so happy for you. Where do you live? I'm in Arizona. You might try posting your question on the over 50 thread. There is some great support on that thread. Let me know how you do! I'll remember you in my prayers. Carol
  19. Hi Holly! Welcome! I noticed you are pretty new to LBS. I love it. I have gotten so much information and support here. I'm sorry I can't answer your particular question, but wanted to respond. How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hey Bandsters! I had my appointment with the surgeon today & really liked her. Showed me the old lapband & the new one & told me to research them and decide which one I want. 3 weeks from today! I'm ready to go. When my Mom & I were getting on the elevator a gal our age & DH were getting on, she asked where I was in the process & said she was banded the 21st of November, had just gotten her first fill, had lost 25 lbs & had already dropped 2 of her 7 meds! She was beaming and I felt so full of hope I looked at my Mom and we both welled up with tears. I appreciate you guys sharing so much! Indio & Phyl....you look great! Thanks for posting pics. I'm excited. Carol
  23. I can't help you out on that one Jim! I'm not computer savvy. LOL But I appreciate you & Red pulling us all together as a group. I'm SO excited. I'm ready and today is going to be a better day of control. Have a great day!

    Long and Winding Road?

Hi gingerbug! Congratulations on your band date! With Christmas & activities it will be here before you know it. I can relate to being able to buy at a regular store. I haven't been able to do that since the 80's. I want to be a "tucker"! That's a phrase from a fellow bandster that was finally able to TUCK in her shirt and wear a belt! Does that sound cool or what? We're going to do this! Best wishes to you! Carol
