  1. It took me nearly a year before I decided to pursue WLS to help me with severe deterioration of my hip and knees. I was scheduled for Hip replacement but cancelled after discussing WLS with my Orthopedic Surgeon. He felt even though I have a relatively low BMI that significant weight loss would greatly increase my success with hip replacement. My Bariatric Surgeon and General Physician, agreed.

I then battled between Bypass and Sleeve for several months, ultimately it was my decision to pursue Sleeve ( Bariatric Surgeon said either would work for me ). I have prepared myself mentally and physically for this surgery and used this Forum as a crutch with great success. I'm 3 days (4 total ) into my clear liquid diet. I'm surprised that I'm not experiencing hunger issues but I do keep drinking liquids and eating sugar free pops like crazy, weight is already coming off.

I'm confident I have made the right decision. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

  2. Surgery went great. I checked in at 9:15. But my surgeon was running behind on his 1st surgery. Surgery was @2:15pm. Took me 4hrs to wake completely up. My family and friends were waiting for me ☺️ I was extremely loopy feeling. Everyone said I just kept mumbling. The nurse asked me if I wanted to walk. So I walked 10x's around the nurses station. I did have a lot pain after surgery. And nurses were on point with meds. NO GAS PX AT ALL! My BP was a bit high, pain/aching in my abdomen. Otherwise I'm ok. Still sleepy though. I was d/c the following day 2pm. The surgeon was laughing because I was sitting with my legs crossed Indian style lol He kept saying you look so refreshed. And no problem sipping Water either. I feel so blessed of my sleeved outcome.

Thank you so much for posting your positive surgical experience. In scheduled for December 19th and feel Im physically and mentally prepared, but posts such as yours add to my confidence.

I too am a " pre-op ", with VSG scheduled for Dec 19. I have researched medical articles and online sources such as " bariatric pal ".

The best conclusion I have come up with is that there is no longer a " gold standard " for WLS. Advancements, changes in approach , statistics, all are influential but ultimately it seems like the final decision rests with the patient ( provided other criteria are satisfied ).

I ( as of today ! ) am still positive on VSG, I feel it will work best for me based on my specific concerns. Good luck with your research, I hope you find the method that best suits you.

I respectfully disagree with your conclusions regarding Scstxrn's comments.

I interpreted Scstxrm's generalization regarding children of WLS moms to providing an environment of healthy eating which would benefit their children, I see no reference where RNY contributed to weight gain in children.

Perhaps it would have been better to state that " increased ability to eat healthy food ".....applied to Both RNY and VGS which certainly would have a positive effect on preventing childhood obesity.

It seems everyone I speak to in my area has had the RNY with varying levels of great results. However, they all mention strict limitations or problems occur. Many of them refer to the VGS as the " new" option and feel they may have considered it over the RNY but are not disappointed with their choice.

Congratulations on your success, it's comments such as yours that make me comfortable pursuing VGS.

Thank you for your insight for choosing VGS, being able to tolerate NSAID's and avoiding long term malabsorption are at the top of my list.

I'm feeling better about selecting the road less travelled in our area for WLS. Although, it scares the hell out of me that my group does so few VSG's but then again it is a less complicated surgery. I guess I would be more concerned if VSG was considered a more complicated surgery than RNY.

  7. I'm scheduled for VGS Dec 19, I selected this method after much research to maintain my digestive tract. My concern is my surgical group is primarily bypass oriented but also does VGS ( 80% bypass and 20% sleeve ). It seems every person I speak to that has had WLS is a bypass, with impressive results.

I'm a relatively low BMI ( 38 ), surgery for severe hip and knee degeneration, but still need to loose 100 pounds for normal BMI. My overall health is good.

My surgeon is non committal, he simply states either option will work for me, but states he does far more bypass procedures. His group is well respected in our area and they work out of a hospital labelled as center of bariatric excellence.

I'm driving myself nuts second guessing the TYPE of procedure ( I'm mentally prepared for WLS and feel it is my best recourse ). Any help or insight would be appreciated !!! ( and yes I have searched this forum ).

Thank you for your reply. I was originally scheduled for Bypass but my surgeon stated I could have either procedure. I like the concept of vertical sleeve more than the bypass but I'm a bit nervous that my surgeon does far more bypasses than sleeves. I have heard great comments about my surgeon and his group, just worried he does not do VSG more often.

Good luck to you, it seems like your off to a great start
