  1. Sorry for not replying sooner! I just wanted to update y'all in case anyone else has a similar issue in the future. I had my pre-admissions appointment and my appointment for medical clearance the day before my surgery and both doctors said that it would be fine to do surgery even though I was sick. My primary care doctor said that I didn't have much congestion and that I sounded worse than I really was, so it would be fine. I had my surgery on the 10th of January and guess what? Despite all my worrying, it was fine! Surgery went great, I'm recovering very nicely, and I'm no longer sick. Thank goodness!

  2. Thanks for all of your responses, everyone. I went to see my primary care doctor today and he said that although my voice is gone, it seems like this cold sounds worse than it is. He said he doesn't hear any congestion in my chest and doesn't see nasal congestion, so he said it should be fine for tomorrow. He was more worried that my pre-admissions blood tests showed that I have low potassium! So, he prescribed some potassium to boost my levels before surgery tomorrow, and recommended rest and Mucinex. I'm already feeling better this evening, and my cough seems to have died down. Fingers crossed that everything goes well tomorrow morning!!!

  3. I'm set to have surgery in two days on January 10th (this Saturday!) and I've started getting super sick this week! Chest congestion, cough, and I've completely lost my voice. Do you think I'll be able to continue on with the surgery? Is it a bad idea to go into surgery with a chest cold? I'm super nervous. I don't want to postpone my surgery, but I also don't want this to affect my recovery. Any thoughts??

  4. I've been vegetarian for 7 years (although I started eating fish about a year ago). I talked to my NUT about remaining vegetarian after my surgery on January 10th and she said it won't be a problem at all. I think it would be an issue being Vegan and having VSG - I don't know what you would eat to be able to get in your Protein - but as a vegetarian it should be okay. Would love to have some sort of group for support after my surgery, though!!

  5. Thank you for this post! So many of these posts resonate with me, and I feel even more justified in my decision not to share this with anyone. I am not planning on telling a soul (other than my wife). I don't want to be defined by this decision and this moment in my life. I don't want to be anyone's reference point when they think of weight loss surgery. The only thing people in my life need to know is that I'm getting healthy. I want them to focus on that rather than how I got there. I want people to see ME once I lose the weight, not just see the "result" of weight loss surgery.

  6. Would it be an absolutely terrible idea to go to Vegas 20 days after gastric sleeve surgery? I purchased plane tickets and made hotel reservations over a year ago to take my husband to Vegas for a birthday trip, and unfortunately, the date I received from my surgeon is 20 days before my Vegas trip. Should I go and just try to stick to my post-op diet? Hopefully I can just sip on the same drink all day (so that it doesn't seem weird to the friends with us) and eat Soups when we go out to eat?

I don't know what to expect from the surgery, so I don't really know if this might be feasible or if I will have to change my date to sometime next year (*sad face*). What do you think?

  7. So, I've finished all of my doctor's visits, insurance approval has been submitted (and is expected to be approved), and I've set the date of my sleeve surgery -- December 3rd! I'm ready for the surgery and really looking forward to it, but I'm nervous about one thing: I don't have much time I can take off of work. I'm a middle school teacher at a charter school so my hours every day are from 7:45-4:15pm. I'm planning on taking a total of 7 days off of work. Is that enough?? Was anyone else able to go back to work in a week? My doctor said to take at least one week, but is that enough? Is it feasible to go back to work that soon?

If it's not enough time, I'll have to wait until February of next year and I really don't want to wait that long. I'd love to hear thoughts on whether or not I should go ahead with my December 3rd surgery date...

    Thank you!!!
