Yeah Santa Rosa is an hour and 10 minutes away. I normally get there in an hour and 3mins. I wish it was local but the trade of for partnership paying 100% is great

I went into this wanting the sleeve (I was pretty hell bent on getting it) as it was less invasive and I didn't want them messing with my intestines (lol) but when I had my first appt with my surgeon I decided to keep an open mind. We discussed both options and he told me he thinks I would do great with either one. He said the RNY would be a bit more powerful and of course I'm thinking "I could sure use more power" lol. My surgeon asked if I had a acid reflux and I told him that I've had some episodes of it but it's nothing crazy. He then told me that the sleeve could make it worse and the RNY cures it. When I went home I thought about it, did more research and discussed it with my husband. Over the following month I made a decision the have Gastric Bypass. I also talked to a friend of mine who has been sleeved for 4 years and recently started having episodes of acid reflux and she's never had it previous to being sleeved, but even with that she's happy and has lost and maintained her fat lost.
@greeneyezz My advice is to make sure you do your research to make the best informed decision for you because the fact is that anyone can complications with any kind of surgery, including bariatric surgery.

Congrats on starting your journey @! No this is not unusual at all, I'm currently on my on my 2 week pre-op (liver shrinking) diet and it's a 1000 calorie diet with all food except on the day before surgery I'll have all liquids. Keep in mind that the pre-op diet can be done multiple ways and it varies depending on the hospital, surgeon, bariatric program and patient. Research is great but don't lock into it.

Hi! Congratulations on taking the first steps to getting healthy!
A couple of tips I would suggest probably of which you have already heard but will help you build very good habits you will need down the road.
Start by focusing on 1 or 2 habits at a time. Don't try to change everything at once. If losing soda is one of them and you really must lose that one, replace it with Water or sf drinks like iced tea or crystal light. Make sure you are drinking all day long. A minimum of 64 oz. this will help prepare you for what you will need to do after surgery to stay hydrated. I am not kidding about this one, it is the number one thing you will focus on coming straight out of the operating room. Oh by the way, many times when we think we are hungry it is our brains telling us we are dehydrated. When you feel hungry drink Water.
Secondly I would try to start eating more Proteins and less bad carbs. Leverage the good ones like vegetables and fruit. Protein is more dense and will both fill you up faster and keep you full longer.
If you are really up for some significant change to get your hunger under control, you could even try leveraging the pre op diet now for a week or two just to reset your system. Your doctors office could share that diet with you. It basically gets rid of the sugar your body craves, shrinks your liver and will even shrink your stomach some. Then you could start back on normal Proteins and good carbs and lots of fluids. Yes, you will be hungry for the first few days but I promise it does get better and you will likely have to do that a couple weeks before your surgery anyway. If you choose to do this, the best thing you could do is stay away from sugar and bad carbs because it really sets you up for success down the road.
To answer the question about hunger, yes for a period of time actual hunger does go away post surgery. The problem is, you still fight head hunger. Head hunger is a real issue that every one of us have had to learn how to recognize. It is that automatic response when you feel hungry but your actually not. I fight mine by first drinking water which does the trick almost every time. If that doesn't work I go do something to disrupt my brain. After a few minutes that feeling goes away.
Post surgery your tummy will actually get full on very little food and your real hunger will likely be gone for the first 6 months or so. In fact, you may forget to eat or gave to set a timer to tell yourself it is time to have a little Protein and good carbs.
I promise this will all make sense to you but the best thing you can do for yourself is take one or two habits at a time. The ones you have chosen are good ones. Leverage sf fluids to help you and start eating some good quality proteins and good carbs to curb your appetite.
A few more good habits to focus on when you are ready to add a new one: while eating try getting rid of distractions so you can pay attention to when you are really full. This means eat at the table with no tv, iPad etc. Eat very slowly so your brain has time to catch up with your stomach. Chew your food a lot. All of these will both help your hunger and build good eating habits.
Good luck on your journey! I wish you all the best.
Oh, and to answer your question about does everyone know this feeling of being hungry the answer is YES! We have all lived it and have had to learn different habits. The surgery is a great tool that really helps you feel full faster. It is up to you to work on making sure what you put onto your new stomach keeps you full longer. If you put the same sugar and carbs in as before surgery, you will get hungrier faster and end up eating around your surgery.
You are definately doing a great job of recognizing that already! Keep up the great work! I know you can do this. Just keep asking yourself am I really hungry? Or should I be drinking more fluids or focused on something else.

@@Charm82 We went into this with the exact same mindset, and ended up changing our minds for the exact same reasons.
My father suffered terribly from GERD and while mine hasn't been as severe, the mere chance that it might be aggravated by the sleeve made up my mind in the end. There were other factors that contributed but that was the main one.
It's a choice that everyone has to make for themselves, based on their own reasons. Each procedure come with pros and cons. You just have to decide which is the best fit for you.

Great topic. I'd honestly not realized how much I relied on medications.... both prescription and otc.....until listing everything for the initial bariatric program paperwork.
I'm hoping that we will all be able to reduce our medications needed to a great degree once we lose the weight.
I'm dealing with a herniated disc and umbilical hernia. Just got my first steroid injection this afternoon for the back.
Hoping this is resolved prior to surgery. Trying to lose 75+ pounds by the date of bypass surgery.
Arthritis in knees and back is something I've used ibuprofen for......will be glad to be able to give it up.
I really hope those of you having Migraines will see benefits on these.

As a chronic pain and Migraine sufferer I had this concern too which is one of the reasons I started out wanting the sleeve. I stopped taking my motrin 800mg about 3 months ago to see if i could manage without them. My surgeon said I can still take motrins but I have to be careful when I do and not take them a lot like I was. I started using tylenol like my surgeon suggested, for most of my pain (not my migraines) taking 1 to 2 500mg tablets helps by either taking pain away completely or it'll just take the edge off enough where I can function a bit but it takes longer to kick in. I'm hoping as I loose weight after surgery I won't have as much pain.I also have a prescription trans-dermal NSAID cream for my joint pains that works great.
I've suffered from chronic Migraines for over 17 years and when they get bad I end up in the E.R on demerol, I'm on a preventative regimen and sometimes my migraine meds work sometimes they don't but my surgeon said I'll still be able to take those after surgery after I heal up.

Hi there! I too have big issues with almost all artificial sweeteners. I avoid them as much as possible before my surgery and now after I cannot even tolerate that overly sickly sweet taste of the.
I will use real sugar, honey or agave in small amounts and I have no problem.
In terms of the pre op diet and the liquid diet post surgery. I chose not to use sf Jello or sf Popsicles ever. I simply stuck to Protein shakes, good homemade chicken stock, watered down apple juice and lots of Water.
Your bariatric team will help you with an appropriate plan.
    Good luck to you!

Charm82 got a reaction from SleeveandRNYchica in WHAT DID YOU CHOOSE RNY OVER VSG?
I chose the sleeve originally but told myself I would be open to the bypass if my surgeon could calm my concerns about it such as the multiple connections being more risky for leaks. I also use NSAIDs for pain which is not good for the gastric bypass pouch but since talking to my surgeon I've been taking Tylenol more and am hoping my knee pain and menstrual pain improves with my weight loss. My surgeon told me that he believes that both the sleeve and the bypass would work great for me its just the bypass is a bit more powerful, so over the following month and a half to two months of my program there I thought about it and I decided on the bypass and recently signed my consent form for it.

Had my surgery on April 30 and within the first 1 week got rid of diabetes, the first success/ Gave up multiple tablets and insulin shots that had kept me going for over 4 years.
Small issues with keeping fluids down. Protein with any form of sugar makes me throw up so switching to unflavoured ones. Icy cold Water is so soothing though have to be careful not to have too much.
Where I live the Calcium, Vitamin and Iron tablets are all large sized, am seeking help on chewable forms of these. Any suggestions please. I am unable to swallow the pills with Water, feel as if its choking me.
Overall the best decision I ever made. Lost about 14 kgs (30 lbs) and need some new clothes for this phase !
