  1. I had a hernia repaired and now have scar tissue forming. The scar tissue along with the swelling is not allowing hardly any liquid to pass. The doctor wants me to wait until the swelling goes down (another 3 weeks of liquids!) to see how much I will be able to get down. If still not enough they will have o use a scope with a balloon to open it up some. It's a minor set back but nothing I can't deal with.

  2. The reason one person can have UHC, Aetna, BCBs, etc and have it covered and another person can have the same company and not have it covered is the insurance companies cover what your employer contracts with them to cover. I work for UHC and UHC has a bariatric exclusion written in our contract. I have a friend that works for a title company and they have coverage through UHC and it is covered. It's based on what your employer contracts with the insurance company to have covered.

  3. So, my dad is 430lbs. He recently tried to ask his insurance (United Health Care) if they'd cover the Gastric Bypass. His doctor thinks it's a good idea. My dad has sleep apnea, arthritis, HBP. He needs this surgery.. his knees are bone on bone.. Anyway, he called to see if they would cover it but they said that his plan wont cover any form of weightloss surgery, even if it's medically necessary. what should he do now?

I work for them as well as have them for coverage and mine was excluded as well.

  4. I was just sleeved 11/04/14!

The Gas-X strips work wonders. I will be praying for each of you. I agree with the other posters as well get the sugar free Popsicles and sugar free Jello. The pillow is a good idea especially if you have to cough. Be sure to get up as soon as they allow and walk, walk, walk, that's what helps the gas pain in your shoulders and back; the strips help with the gas in your belly.

  5. I had my surgery this morning around 7:30am. So far everything is great and I'm not having any issues. I also met a lady that is a member on here that had her surgery today too. Hope I've found a new long term friend :)

Congrats on your surgery! I had mine one week ago at True Results in Houston.

  6. I'm so happy everything went well! Is your throat sore from the breathing tube?

What kind of medication do you have for pain?

Thank you! I'm so glad it's finally done. I have a short neck so the gas gets trapped causing the sore throat..... I had really bad acid reflux.

I was given a liquid narco as well as a pill that has to be crushed if needed for the pain.

  7. Got sleeved 11/04/14! Gas pain was the worst but walking and gas-x strips really helped. I too had the nausea patch behind my ear that made my vision blurry. The vision issue went away once the path was removed. sleeping in my recliner has been wonderful as trying to get in and out of the bed proved to be quite painful. My throat was very sore but medicated throat spray helped ( even sipping Water was painful). I feel so much better today. I was able to have the broth from a can of chicken Soup and it was wonderful. Popsicles have been great as well!

  8. My surgery was 8 years ago, they may have improved their after care, that was also for the band....I know now there are many that operate as full service bariatric centers with classes etc....I just felt that once the procedure was done I was just dealing with his PA and just going to scheduled fills....it was his PA that kept telling me nothing was wrong for 9 months when I had a leak, it wasn't until his new PA (who was excellent, can't remember her name) that diagnosed my leak first time I saw her...I just felt that if I had seen him at least once in that 9 month period maybe it would have been different. I would still use him as a surgeon if my insurance covered it but would hope for more in the after care.

Bookworm1286 I had my pre-op with him today. He answered all my questions, was very informative so my mind is at ease. I will be his first patient Tuesday (11-04-14 ) morning. I am excited now and looking forward to the life I have yet to live!

I pray that your journey will result in the fruition of your hearts desires!

  9. The band was ok at first but I did have to have second surgery to repair a leak in the port tubing and it seemed like I never got back on track, it did help with portions but it was too easy to eat "poorly" with the band.....I am working on pre-op testing for the revision surgery because the band slipped 2 months ago so I am getting the RNY gastric bypass....I can't say I'm not sorry to get rid of the band. Dr Marvin isn't on my insurance any more so I chose Dr. Garth Davis for my revision, and I am happy with my choice so far...I think the program he has will be beneficial for me, Dr Marvin didn't have a very structured after care back then, it was my only drawback with him as my surgeon. The actual surgeries went extremely well.

The after care is what I am really concerned about..

Thanks for your honest review. I have a list of questions for him tomorrow. I am a very analytical person and often make myself crazy analyzing ever little detail so I require them to put everything in writing so I can read, read, and read again until I have clear understanding. The decision to have the surgery was made lightly so I don't need anybody to be able to say after the fact that they told me something different.

  10. Dr Marvin did my band in 2007, excellent surgeon

    That's Good to Know!! I have a pre-op with him tomorrow 10-31.

I have been on an emotional roller coaster these last few days. I am so ready to get it over with.

How has your journey been thus far? My initial thought was the band but decided to go with the sleeve.

  11. There are many insurance companies that have a bariatric exclusion in the policy due to the contract your employer has with the insurance company. It doesn't matter if it's BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UHC, or Joe Blow down the street, your employer negotiated the contract with the company. If there is an exclusion it will not be covered even if you can prove medical necessity. There are lawyers that will take the case and try to get it covered but that often is a long process and still no guarantee. I work for UHC and it is excluded, therefore I am self- paying.

    Hope this helps!
