Yay! Same date as me :-) Where are you having your surgery and when do you start your pre-op diet?

I'll start off by saying, I am a nurse and I obviously work with nurses. Nurses are really judgmental at times, especially to one of their own. It just in most of our natures to have the "suck it up buttercup and quit feeling sorry for yourself. You did this to yourself" attitude. Anyway, for this reason I was trying not to tell anyone other than one close friend/coworker and my nurse manager. Well my nurse manager forced my hand, for reasons I won't bore you with, and I felt the need to own my situation and tell my unit. It's a small 13 person unit and we love/bicker like sisters. Most have been supportive but some keep saying "you're not that big", "you don't have that much to lose, you shouldn't need it". Well let me tell ya ladies, if it was that easy I would have done it when I was 13 and battling it, or all of the other failed attempts, most of which involved weight loss meds. I know I'm "only" 190, but when I have 70lbs to lose it is a lot to me. My joints are wearing from the weight due to my rheumatoid arthritis and I am in a lot of pain. They don't see it because I don't broadcast it. They don't see me fret over my LDL of 186. I just don't need people being flippant and judgmental right now. It was a very difficult decision and I feeling a bit vulnerable.

I am one month away also, Nov 6. Cant wait.

I'm Nov 17th & now that I have my date, I'm really starting to feel that this is real. I was silly & since there were no pre-surgery weight loss requirements for me I was afraid to really do much to embrace my new life style. (Or should I say I was milking every moment until told to do otherwise). My doctor just recommended exercise, so later that same say, I joined planet fitness. I have a coworker who joined with me and my son goes with me. Its been 1 week and it is something that I really enjoy doing with him!

I am so sorry you had to deal with that. I had a bad experience last year. Normally, the flight attendant very discretely hands me a seat belt extender, and that is the end of it. I generally fly about once a year, and I have weighed the same, plus or minus ten pounds for a long time. (Haven't had the surgery yet) The woman at the Southwest gate came charging down the ramp into the plane. I was in the process of putting on my seat belt, and she kneeled on the seat in front of me, facing my husband and I. She said that I couldn't fit in the seat with the arm rest down. i said I could, wait and look. She said in a nasty voice, "Not comfortably!" I had just flown a week before on two planes with Southwest. My husband was sitting right next to me, so there wouldn't have been another customer complaining. She told me she had to put a seat between me and the other passenger, had a printed "reserved" ticket that I had to place between us, and told me that I was now in the computer as a passenger who requires two seats. She was not discreet. How humiliating! I am flying to Chicago next week on American. I hope there isn't another incident. I've never had that problem before.
I was traveling with my husband who had a stroke six month earlier, and has stage four cancer, so I didn't get her badge number.

I smell money $$$$$$$$. If not in comps, then in punitive damages. When you write your complaint letter, threaten to contact the media, the FAA, anyone with clout, and let them know that you should have not been singled out that way. If you do not remember the emplyee's give the best description you can, with airport, flight number, etc to be as specific as you can. Good luck, and this may at least be worth a free flight in the future.

I'm glad you're writing a letter and I hope you get something comped from the airline because that is unacceptable behavior. Sorry you had to go through that

The crappy part was I just for out of OKC on the same airline with no issues. Same seat assignment even (I always select a window so I'm only crowding one person). And this happened in the terminal, before we even boarded the plane! It wasn't the stewardess, it was one of the ticket attendants at the gate. She literally walked over to me, asked what flight I was on then asked if I could come with her. I'm writing a complaint letter. I could understand if the person seated by me complained, they didn't by the way. But this was before I'd even gotten on the plane.

Been there done that and more...was once on a flight for which I had requested an exit row to have a bit more leg room. As I boarded I did my customary...could you bring me a seat belt extender. Got to my seat settled in, plane is FULL and THEN the stewardess comes over in a not very quiet voice and tells me I can't sit there because if I need a seat belt extender I might block the exit...so she makes a big deal out of finding someone to switch with me and I get up and move. My face stayed red the whole flight...
So I know how much it sucks! So shake it off, focus on the future when you wont need to worry about things like this EVER again and you will get there.

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry you had to experience that. I can't believe that employee would even say something preemptively... That's incredibly insensitive. IF someone said something maybe then approach the subject in a more tactful way. I'm sorry at least you know you're on these boards for a reason and are completely surrounded by people who understand. *hug*

Hello everyone, I am just getting started and was scheduled for surgery just a month away ! I go in for my 4 wk pre op tomorrow. So far I dont have any nerves going on LOL. Just a few questions and eager to start my new life.

I had scar tissue from four previous open abdominal surgeries. My sleeve surgery was 5 1/2 hours as my surgeon had to remove the scar tissue before she could proceed. Hoping for a good outcome for you.
