  1. These things worry me also....Before I met with a surgeon or PCP I called my insurance to see if they covered it. They asked my my weight and BMI...and told me about the 6 month program. Well...I went to the doc 2 days ago and he weighed me in full clothing...the weight was 4 lbs heavier than what I told the insurance I was. As soon as I got home..I re-weighed myself and realized the doc scale was wrong. So now Im worrried that they will deny me cuz of such a small weight difference cuz of scale calibrations. My plan is to join Jenny Craig to show them that I am really trying hard. But like most I only have a 41 BMI and cannot lose much....smh...I hate this game. Part of me feels like saying F THIS, IM GOING TO MEXICO! But I really prefer to be close to home for my operation in case something goes wrong.
  2. Wow! Thats awesome...you go girl! Please keep in touch and fill me in. Good luck with everything.
  3. Just curious... What are some common reasons people are denies WLS by their insurance carrier?
  4. Hey Kelly! I'm Crystal...also from NY...Brooklyn to be exact. I literally decided to have WLS 3 weeks ago after 5 years of thinking about it. Met with my primary care provider today to start my 6 month diet and this Saturday I have a meeting with a weight loss surgeon. If my calculations are correct...I should be eligible for surgery April of 2015....and thats not soon enough lol Congrats on your December surgery date!...Keep in touch!

  9. I haven't had the surgery yet. I was just asking for future reference.
  10. My "Final Straw" was a series of events. Last November my weight began to creep back up in usual fashion. My friend recommended this weight loss doctor who had a program consisting of high Protein, low carb and appetite suppressants. When I went to the doctor he was so rude and the meds had some scary side effects that it pushed me to start exercising and dieting. Jan 2014 I started exercise DVD programs and low carb dieting. Lost 23lbs by April 2014. May 2014-June 2014 I began to experience some weird debilitating light headedness so I stopped the dieting and exercise. By July I was feeling normal and had gained back 7lbs. By the end of August I gained back 15lbs. *Final Straw* September rolled around and a vacation that I had saved up for all year was approaching. Sadly, my weightloss goals I set for myself had failed and many of the cute outfits I bought in June for my vacation could no longer fit. 3 days before vacation I cried myself to sleep. I cried cuz I gained the weight back and because I failed another weight loss goal. 2 days before my vacation I texted my older sister that I was gonna have WLS. She texted me back "me too."
  11. Wow! What an a$$hole! You should've said to her "what makes you think I'm not already pretty and have guys chasing after me? I'm not doing this for beauty or attention. I'm doing this for my health."
  12. Awesome!!! Good luck! I hope you get approved!
  13. Genetics?..ugh! I guess I'm doomed. I scar with mosquito bites ????
  14. Yes! I'll be there! Thanks liz
  15. Brooklyn girl here...reaching out for NYC support. Finally decided to get sleeved last week and I have my first appt. with doc next week. Insurance requires 6 month wait.
  16. Cool suggestions!!! Thanks!!!
  17. Morning all! I wanted to know if anyone had any scar remedies, creams or treatments they could recommend. Zulily.com has Scar away cream on sale and I was wondering if it was any good. See pic attached
  18. @@Alex Brecher Can you recommend anyone in Brooklyn NY? I called my insurance and they said that NY Methodist was a Center Of Excellence hospital. I was thinking of going to Brookdale because its across the street from my apartment. While I believe that Methodist may be the "best" in Brooklyn, being a nurse myself who has worked for one of the "best" hospitals in NYC I tend to not go by name. I like the small community hospital feel because Ive noticed that patient care is more personal and nurses arent overwhelmed....but thats just me. Any recommendations for BK would be great!
  19. I understand where they are coming from, needing proof that you tried conventional weight loss...I'm just a little antsy cuz I want it over with. I've been struggling with diet and exercise since I was 12....my story is very similar to yours...If I could've lost the weight on my own then I wouldn't be trying for WLS. I hate to be a brat but I really don't wanna try another diet again. Ugh! I'm just frustrated and want this over with. Also...I don't think we are necessarily taking the "easy way out"...surgery has it's risks. Thanks for your input...and thanks for listening.
  20. Hi....I was wondering if anyone from the NYC area had the SILS procedure and if they had a surgeon they highly recommended. Thanks
  21. Got off the phone today with a representative from United Health Care and apparently I have to have 6 months of supervised weight loss with a Doctor, Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian. While I am grateful for having insurance I am a little bummed out about having to wait 6 MORE months. I've been considering Lap Band for 5 years and now that I finally made a decision waiting 6 more months just seems like torture. Judging by the posts in this forum this is not that uncommon...I'm just feeling antsy and frustrated. First of all I have no record of the multiple attempts to lose weight since I was 12 years old! Second, My BMI is 41....So if I do lose weight in these 6 months then I wont qualify...correct? On a positive note February 2015 is my 1 year anniversary at my new job...so I'll have tons of sick time and vacation time saved up. Thanks for listening to my rant
